Xbox 360 Black Friday Report (750K)

Super Smart move of 360 to catch stragglers who been on the fence for fucking ever to pick up a 360

I mean smart as fuck to give Skyrim as a DL title with the 250GB version of the Holiday Bundle

So they get you going into their service area, DL a great game, buy DLC, and keep using th

Its readily available to anyone that wants one.

I like how I already quoted you and explained to you what supply constrained means and you're still not getting it.

If it matters to you a lot then you're not playing on 360.

For some reason Baconsammy doesn't acknowledge PC gaming. He likes to talk about playing the best possible version of the game but lets his daughter play Minecraft on the Xbox 360.

I actually think Sony killed it. Work at Best Buy and we completely sold out of the $199 Infamous bundle and a minimum of 15-20 Vita's I'd say, and definitely outsold the 360 bundle, though we get 3x the Microsoft product as Sony.

We had at least 75-100 systems though....I bet it's identical to MS' numbers

Congrats to both though, especially in the market this long alongside the Wii U (Which I hardly got asked about at all).

360 basically outsold PS3 2-1 last year according to November's NPD. This year, 360 has a huge exclusive in Halo 4, while PS3 has very little. Black Ops 2 is probably the biggest catalyst for new console sales, but CoD is always more popular on 360. PS3 has some family friendly games, which could conceivably be purchased in droves over the holidays, but I don't see these particular titles doing a whole lot sales wise. Also, 360 is beating PS3 again this year on the price front.

I expect a repeat of last year.

Every kid I saw wanted that 150 360 and a bunch of games. 360 really has become a PS2 like device in America at least. MS better play things smart next year because they are positioned really well to dominate America next gen. And when the likely mediocre PS3 numbers come out, Sony has no one to blame but themselves when their holiday lineup was terrible.

That scares me a bit if MS does dominate next gen in US/Europe

Yes. If they were so intent on explicitly showing off how profitable the Xbox business is, they wouldn't set up their divisions in such a way.

You missed my point. You claimed MS doesn't want to have a division in the red all the time, so they saddle xbox with a bunch of losers. But they do, in fact, have a division in the red all the time, so clearly they're ok with that.

Piped ream. PS3 hasn't gone toe to toe with 360 for years in the US let alone at the holiday period. And we had this exact same 'evidence' last year. They did 800,000 less. If anything MS should have a better marketshare against PS3 this year compared to last.

I feel like this thread is sorta hostile and people are trying to lick other people's tears. I'm glad to see that people are buying consoles and I can enjoy my favorite system for a while longer.

MS will probably have an increased marketshare in the US but PS3 will likely narrow the lead worldwide in the context of year to year as it has been doing for 6 years.

Still stunned that the system sells like this and hasn't had an official price drop in over 4 years.

I thought they recently had a price drop, or was that only in a few other regions? I don't pay that much attention to prices and sales these days.

The only issue is they cannot chart in Japan or they would have won this industry already. It is only fair to cheer them on when they do well here.

I think Europe should be a bigger focus for MS than Japan.

If EyeToy had done for PS2 what Kinect did for 360, you might actually have a valid basis for the comparison of the two. Regardless of the validity, comparing Sony's overall strategy and marketing from the PS2 to the PS3 is only going to look bad considering with the former they were king of the hill and the latter they spent the majority of the generation in last place.

I thought the eyetoy was huge in Europe, or am I mistaken?

These are pretty crazy numbers too no? Really wish Live gave you more on the fly stats like Steam so you can see how many people are playing what game.

I think between Day-1 digital releases and what you describe (on the fly statistics), Xbox Live would be one step closer to pushing me over to digital only.

I don't think they're okay with the Online Services division hemorrhaging money. They just can't hide that much money elsewhere.

Ignore Japan and concentrate on Europe.

MS will probably have an increased marketshare in the US but PS3 will likely narrow the lead worldwide in the context of year to year as it has been doing for 6 years.

This depends on how big of a chunk the WiiU takes away from PS3 in Japan. The reason Sony has been able to catch up at all Worldwide is because the 360 is totally dead in Japan.

Oops sorry I missed your post man. That makes sense.

If they were truly smart, they would have made a 360 with creeper art and sold it along with a code for a download of Minecraft. Really suck in those kiddies.

Why would I talk about PC ports in a discussion about consoles? Should I interrupt a bunch of people talking about the NBA and start talking about the NFL? And my daughter is playing the best version of Minecraft. The only version that allows her and her friends to play splitscreen. Any other bad arguments you feel like making?

You make a good point, although Europe will help but likely not enough to offset US sales difference which Japan usually does. Wii U sales will be very interesting in Japan although it seems like right now their launch lineup is much more western focused and lack Japanese games beyond nintendo land and nsmbu. Nintendo is always big in Japan though so I expect good sales. How much they erode PS3 sales is the most interesting statistic.

I'm not sure whether it would be better to have a repeat of this gen with most games on both platforms or another PS2-like console that most developers would be able to focus on. In the latter case, however, I would prefer MS to dominate over the other two.

Kids love the creepers. I have firsthand experience of this.

Also, kids love extensive mod support in PC games. They can't get enough of that shit. Most kids can be found hex editing .jar files RIGHT NOW.

They're not so far apart that you'd choose to buy a 360 over a PS3. You're much more likely to choose based on exclusives and which platform suits your other needs - online, friends, media services etc. Multiplatform games are close enough to not factor into it IMO

The number of people who choose due to the multi plateforms', real or fake difference, actually occurs fairly often. There is a reason its talked about so much, and there are threads about it, and analysis so much. I can't speak for major stores but my best friend owns his own game store and he hears this almost every time someone picks up a 360. I assume that happens elsewhere as well.
That is in no way discounting all the other things you mentioned. But it is actually a much discussed and impact-full bit of the purchase discussions. If you think about it, that decision sort of causes some of the others. I know many people who bought 360's for Skyrim due to the big difference and they tell their friends, who then get them. So in a way its a secondary cause for purchase there as well.

I love the anecdotals every holiday. In years past you would have thought PS3 was going to outsell 360 3-1.

Remember the retail musings threads? All of them had PS3 selling at a phenomenal rate, the Wii declining and 360 barely selling at all. They were always a good way to judge NPD because NPD was always the exact opposite of the musings threads.

Maybe it was, actually. I'm not really sure, I don't remember it ever really being discussed on here during the PS2 generation. If people had data for it either way I'd be interested.

Wait, what? Are you equating PC and console gaming to the NBA and NFL?

And also the PC version of Minecraft is the best version. If split screen is what makes the game awesome for your daughter and her friends that's great and it's a great port in general but doesn't even scrape the surface of what the PC version offers.

Who gives a shit what it "scrapes"? It's The. Best. Version. For. Her. And. Her. Friends. What part of that can't you comprehend? If she didn't own a PC or a TV, and only owned it on iPad, I'd say that's the best version for her as well. See how that works? I also love how your panties got twisted by my choice of sports leagues, as if there was some nefarious reason for my choices. There wasn't. But if you want to pretend there was, then I'll play along. PC - popular world wide like the NBA. NFL popular mainly in the US and a little in England...like the 360.

I had 4 tiny cousins over for Thanksgiving and they were all playing free versions of Minecraft on their parents iPhones. The 360 version is much better than that version with split screen and online. Kids want to play minecraft, regardless of what platform it's on. The 360 version has done gangbusters for a reason and the majority of people who bought it don't care about mods or a much quicker update schedule on PC. It sold millions of copies at $20 to an audience where more than half isn't even connected to the internet...think about that.

6 million copies, I believe. Not only is it selling the game, but it's also selling 360s. Much to the chagrin of several of my daughter's friends' parents. Minecraft is the crack, and the 360 is one of the pipes.

Tell her to get new friends! Ones who know how to edit Java settings in notepad!

That does sound like fun. No, wait, I told her and she flipped me the bird. Damn kids.

Huge... I wouldn't go that far, but I think it did well enough. I believe SingStar and Buzz were bigger, however, primarily thanks to Sony publishing a shitload of localized versions with specific content for even the smallest of markets.

Someone needs to go over to Sony and give their publishing team a slap and ask why Minecraft isn't on PSN.

That is because 99% of posters don't actually work in retail and if you think really, really hard... it will happen!!

What were the Black Friday deals this year?

I'm sure I remember them having a $150 bundle last year, not sure if they had anything that cheap this year.

Oh, that would make sense. But it certainly wasn't a secondary launch re-branding that Kinect was for the 360.

See, you clarified yourself there. It's the best version for her, we can agree on that.

Who is getting their panties in a twist here? It's certainly not me.

It wasn't choice of sports leagues either, it was your comparison, which I think you could've made a better one if you tried.
