Xbox 360 Fall Update - First details...

There is absolutely no way that this feature should be ON by default. I don't have a problem with them adding this, but absolutely positively this should be opt-in, NOT opt-out.

Also, I know we don't have a full rundown of the updates coming along with the Fall update, but I'm getting a bit off an Apple-itus feeling here: toss in a bunch of wizz-bang new features, but don't properly fix the ground-level stuff that has been broken for ages.

Fix the music player, do some serious modifications to the friends list (more than 100 friends would be great, but at least let me organize/nickname/group/SOMETHING so that I know who everyone is), let me take those god-damn XBLA demos off of my games list, etc. Add those in with the legit requests of others, and there are a lot of little yet very serious upgrades that need to be done.

Additions that make nice press release bullet points are all well and good, but too many things have needed some updating/fixing for too long.

I find it funny people are bitching in this thread like this is the only feature that's going to be implemented in the update. Like countless others have said, this is a good thing for the people who want it. For those who don't want it, you can easily turn it off.

The other features will be announced as we get closer to the update.

I imagine this being quite useful for people new to Live. Got a group of friends already on? Go to their friends list and save yourself the time it would have taken to enter all their gamertags with quicker adding.

Whining about one update that can be blocked...

Blocked right now before the update is even live...

Don't ever change GAF...

The problem is, a lot of people who aren't as tech and news savvy might not know about this entire thing, or that they need to turn it off instead of deciding to turn it on.

Privacy is and should be a very important matter. Most sites or social services (at least the ones I've used) have always required the user to ALLOW other people to see these kinds of details, not DENY them.

This biggest one, Myspace, has it where you can see your friend's friend list as default. Well it did when I used it.

Set mine to friends only. It is nice that we have the chance to set it ahead of time.

And it's in the OP, but the PR said to look for more details on the update later this month - which only runs through Wednesday. Hopefully the full feature set is announced then.

The gamertag of the people on your friends list is not private information. You probably don't even know the first names of half the people on your friends list. Just because I know your friends with 'generic gamertag x' doesn't tell me a damn thing about who that person is or what kind of person you are. Facebook and myspace do this same kind of thing with a person's real name, location, gender, and age. Which is why it should be opt in. Someone's gamertag tells me none of that, which means making this an issue of privacy pretty off-base.

Correct.

Which also makes the feature absolutely fucking useless, unless what this generation has really been missing is being able to say "Oh, gee, Bob from work is friends with HaloIzAwesome41. Wonder who that is."

I'm trying to understand why having this on by default hurts anything? It's not like you gain any personal information outside of someone's gamertag and probably gamerscore. Certainly no more than looking at your friends profile now, which most of whom I don't even know by their real name.

Seriously, even if you don't use it yourself, where it he harm it letting others see who is on your friends list? Is it going to be embarrassing to admit you only have five friends? Or is MastaKillah69 going to be pissed when he finds out that you have 3litePlaya on your list of friends too? Maybe he'll quit playing Halo 3 with you and remove you from his friends list?

The horror!

Some people just don't like to give out their gamertags to strangers. Next thing you know, they have a bazillion friend requests.

More friend slots would certainly be nice. Does PSN have this restriction?
I think its only 50 right? I haven't maxed it out, but my 360 list is constantly at 100-101 people and it sucks having to ditch someone to add someone else

Someone should have told that to the Monday Night Football crew a few weeks back when they gave out Giants Defensive Lineman Osi Umenyiora's gamertag out on live TV. :lol

I guess I just don't see it being an issue. You either accept them or deny them. If you've got a hundred friends already, they'll get a message saying your list is full. If it gets to be awful, you opt out I suppose. But personally, I don't see that being a huge problem unless you're a celeb of some sort and someone links your gamertag back to you.

I just remove those random Halo guys that send friend requests after I destroy them...

I just got a press release that outlines a cool new feature in the upcoming Fall dashboard update that is due out on December 4th. The new feature allows you to see who is on someone's friends list. This is particularly useful for looking up old friends, or for doing clan management. And even though the service isn't live yet, you can manage your privacy settings before the update at www.xbox.com/fof.

For all of the details, check out the full media alert.

Well, that's creepy. However, I'm looking forward to our first "just found out my gf has her ex on her friends list " thread.

Yeah, every single time you play a game online, you give out your gamertag to strangers. My god, some of you just like to bitch about nothing. TURN IT OFF then. I will probably use it right away. A friend of mine works with some people that all play. We've played together a couple of times, but I didn't get around to friend requesting them because I just noticed when my friend was on and met up through him. Through his list I'll get them and we'll be able to play.

Exactly. The only people who have a truly 'private' gamertag are those who never, ever play with any public players. Even if you go out and play Halo 3 matchmaking with friends, your tag is being broadcast to other players. Hell, even if playing a private game with friends, sometimes some of their other friends that I don't know will join in.

There's nothing really private about a gamertag, and it's not like your real name and address are part of your public profile. :lol

I can't believe there are people complaining that we haven't heard anything about the fixes for this update. I doubt we will hear what fixes are in place until the thing has released.

Do you honestly think they'll release a press release announcing the inclusion of fast forward and rewind buttons in the music player? No, neither do I.

It's pretty obvious they're only doing press releases for brand new features. Lists of bug fixes and general annoyances will come later.

Neogaf isn't bitching, it's just very aware of the problems in hand and thereof do the right thing to make the developers alerted on... the problem, or whatever.

For some reason, I can't change the settings, just give me information on that page.

Face it, who isn't adding social networking to their crap these days? Everyone has to be a myspace/facebook.

Hopefully this isn't the "major" feature of this release, they really need to tweak what they have now.

Give me Divx or give me another update.

Divx support would be like the Zune/ipod/H.264, as in you download a small extension on the marketplace or when you play a Divx file, it will get it for you.

or so i think.

Considering the other two features that have already been announced have been more touted, I don't think they see this as a major feature.

This feature was actually talked about before the 360 even came out, so it's been on the roadmap for ages.

What next? Live Anywhere? :lol

Maybe, maybe not. They added MPEG-4 and h.264 last spring for everybody via the big dash update.

Then again, if they are paying a license, it would make sense for them to only download it to those who use it. Unless they are also using it in games, in which case everybody should have it.

You're already able to view who's in your friend's Halo 3 party (including ppl not in your friends list) so I guess they expanded upon that...why this' such a big problem for many, i've no idea....

I do. It seems like MS is announcing the features they want to highlight the most before the full feature list is announced. I think the whole idea is to get this item some press so it doesn't get buried in the full announcement. (Ditto the parental controls and Xbox Originals). On the day of the full announcement, MS will have other features they want to highlight. The stuff they don't consider a major feature will be lumped together in the full announcement.

It's definately not as big a deal, though.

how about >150 friend slots?
It's capped at 100 right now.

I think everyone is missing something big here. They ostensibly extended the friends list without raising the cap. You can make a shell silver account and add it to your friends list and you have access to another 100 friends.

OH GREAT, here comes the flood of $49.99 per year Xbox Live porn bot friend requests! >_<

True enough. A press release probably does signify that they see it as a fairly big feature. I guess personally I saw the Originals thing as bigger. This gets about the same reaction out of me as the parental timer announcement. Which is to say, not much.

Who fucking cares? These aren't critical details.
