Xbox 360 gaining USB storage support in spring 2010 update...16gb cap? smh

This is major news, especially for those of use still soldiering on with 20GB and arcade users. Now I can finally do a number of simultaneous installs and not have to erase as often. It'd be good to see what, if any, performance gains may come of this option.

Help a semi-computer-illiterate brother out, GAF...

I have a 250GB usb drive, all of which at present is formatted into an NTFS state. If I format 16GB of that into a FAT32 format, could I just copy, drag, and drop my music library into the 16GB section via PC, and the 360 would recognize it? I refuse to rip 350+ albums to the console's 60gigger and I don't own an iPod.
One of the very first things that I did when I bought my system in 2005 was to hook up one of the 250GB FAT32 externals I had at the time. The system recognized all compatible formats without any issues. Playback options were terrible, though.

Using PartitionMagic 8 here, do I set the partition as Primary or Logical? The FAT32 portion right now is set to Logical and my 360 won't pick it up.

Primary. I have a 250 gig and Xbox picks up the entire 250 gigs of space.

Wish I could just dump a bunch of video/picture files straight into the Xbox360's hd. I have a 120 gig and only own 3 games so there's a lot of space left.

Yes, I apparently do. Mock away!
doesn't matter, it's Microsoft that needs to be mocked here! :lol

I do have to wonder though if these are high-speed flashdrives, cos the ones on the market aren't that cheap either

The price for those official usb pens is terrible, but people will buy them.

I can't wait for some people to experiment loading times by installing games to some usb devices, I am expecting to see loading in some games beat the HDD.

What I find worse on that gamestop page is UFC 2010's pre order bonus of 4 extra people to play as, 4! another shit developer keeping sellers happy choice.

Pretty much people will buy them. Just wondering what are the transfer rates on these official usb sticks.

Kinda makes me wish there were more then one USB port on the back of the system. With WiFi, Natal, and now a USB stick im all plugged up.

Not sure about Natal, but for the others you can just use a simple cheap USB hub. I've done it before. The only issue is how much power Natal draws over the usb port, cuz some hubs don't supply enough power.

I checked Walmart for 16 GB USB sticks and the only one they had (cruzer, I think) was $60. The MS ones are overpriced compared to ones you can buy online but not that bad compared to what's available to the 'joe sixpack' consumer.

That said, I'm still glad I have a bunch of sticks thanks to work :lol

Sandisk have a model of usb drive called cruzer and are apparently making the official usb drives aswell. Sucks that a 16GB drive only has around 14.9GB useable though.

looks like Microsoft is now bundling USB memory with XBOX 360
this is from the latest Famitsu and Lost Planet 2 bundle.

So people are saying you can ONLY use two sticks, but I've seen some say that means you can only use two sticks PERIOD, while others say you can have as many as you want, but can only have two in the machine at any given time and you'll have to remember what's on them - PS1 era memory card style!

So which is it?

The last one... only two sticks at a time (for 32 GB total), but have as many as you want in your library. I thought about getting sticks that are small enough to place inside the game case.

This update is today, right? I am hoping we get it before 5pm GMT so I can take my gamertag to my cousins without having to hull my entire HDD.

Supposed to be the 6th I thought.

No, April 6th

EDIT: beaten, beaten, beaten, beaten :P

When they say 2 sticks period, they mean that you can't plug in a USB Hub and stick in 4 more. You can have as many as you want, but the system will only recognize two at a time from what MS has said.

Wait...do you need to have a HDD for the USB stick to work? and also why does the 20 GB need 7 GB for internal stuff and what not when the Arcade works without those 7GB that`s taken out of the HDD? :D

Because it's horse shit. Remember when they had the balls to charge $100 for a 20GB HDD :lol

Actually I wonder if Microsoft could do everything over again, if they would have gone with a bigger initial HDD or made the price a bit lower. The biggest limiter in my 360 digital purchases are the HDD space, where I have to constantly delete stuff just to make room for new purchases. I actually haven't bought anything for a couple of months thanks to this. I wonder how much money they're missing out on in that regard compared to new HDD purchases.

A chunk of the HDD is reserved for future things, game caches and xbox 1 support, I don't mind but on a 20gig hdd it takes up way too much room.

Without the HDD and using a usb pen I doubt xbox 1 games will play, dunno.

A 20 GB hard drive formats to around 19 GB. You take 2 GB for backwards compatibility partition and 4 GB for cache and other hard drive related activities so that leaves about 13 GB. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_hardware under Hard drive storage.

Are you fucking serious? 16gb cap? So the 360 is equal to a top-of-the-line PC from 1998!

Shit like this just pisses me off to no end.

Why? What do you need to put on your 360 that you need more than 32GB? Unless you're installing a bunch of games, I'm not seeing it. Music and movies aren't restricted by the 16GB limited either.

MS must be making their version of "PStwo" otherwise there is no reason to open this up.

Xbox 360's accessories pricing structure is a lot closer to PS2 than PS3 is. First you have the over-priced memory card, which they extend to the harddrive. Than you have the $99 wifi adopter. Then they had the camera which is pretty much the eyetoy camera. They came straight from the PS2 play book IMO.

So if we use the PS2 history to predict the next revision of the Xbox 360, it will be a slimmer model that doesn't come with the harddrive. It may even use a different harddrive add-on.

lol but you are right in some way.
I have a question though, some MMO games or things like Forza 3's 2nd disc require a hdd right? I hope those get supported too in some way.

EDIT: Oh and I'll buy 2 sticks from ebay, super cheap, idc about transfer rates lol

And this is a reason to be "pissed off to no end"? Just sayin', the biggest benefit to increased storage is to install more games, but needing more than a couple installed at a time isn't grounds for being upset over anything.

It just needs space to install on. I can't see why it would require an HDD unless Microsoft just feels like being dicks.

I am not even "OMG I am going to argue online for hours" angry because my 360 is dead anyway. So I guess I might not really be "pissed off to no end" It's just the principle of the matter.

1. I have a device which is perfectly capable of reading a large amount of memory.
2. I have another device perfectly capable of holding such a large amount of memory.
3. There is a universal cord that connects them.

There is no good fucking reason why they should give you arbitrary limits, especially if they are going to the trouble of FINALLY unlocking this feature. I just hate putting my trust in a company when it looks like they are just trying to figure out ways to screw you over.

So yeah, corporate apologists GTFO

I apologize, on behalf of the Microsoft Corporation.

I wasn't trying to defend Microsoft, I just didn't get why you would even really have a desire for more memory than that.

The more space you have, the more you make use of it. Someone on a 20 gig drive likely only installs the game they are currently playing and a little bit of DLC. Someone on a 120 gig drive likely has a ton of DLC, installs a bunch of games, and checks out a few demos. Someone on a 250 gig drive will probably install all their games, download every demo they want, and have a ton of DLC.

I wouldn't mind moving up from a 120 to a 250, and being able to make use of the many, many spare storage devices I have sitting around would save me a lot of money.

As someone said, installing games. my 60GB PS3 has been full for a good year and a half because of installs.

It is just an asinine decision as far as I am concerned. One of the 'features' of the Xbox 360 is the ability to install games to make them run better. Kind of defeats the purpose if I end up hitting the small limit and have to uninstall and reinstall games constantly...

I can't understand how you DON'T understand my desire for more memory? 32GB is NOT a lot of space, and is actually a pretty damn pitiful number in this day and age.

you don't have to be a corporate apologist to not be outraged. ok, watch this. nah, for real. check this out:

i think the 16gb cap is stupid but whatevz man.

OH SHIT, A SHADE OF GRAY IN AN INTERNET WORLD OF BLACK AND WHITE!!!!

how the fuck did i do that? i'm blowing minds up in this bitch.

This isn't even about some silly "internet world"

This is about the real world where one of the biggest companies in gaming makes a unnecessarily restrictive design choice for their flapship product.

However, yes, let's just go back to arguing bayonetta vs. GoW3 vs. Dante's inferno instead of actually talking about something (even slightly) meaningful.
