Xbox 360 Live demo availability thread

Oh snap. I saw this when I checked at 11AM or so but swore I saw somepone post about it already so didn't bother mentioning it. (Edit, it was the FF Trailer thread I saw too hastily).

It's uh... Pretty much Fusion Frenzy all over again. The demo's weak, only 3 games, usual lame designs and tons of neon. Nothing great, but if you liked the first you may care.

One game you're in a box mover vehiicle, and *gasp* boxes drop, and you take them back to your "corner". But others can go to your corner and steal them if they want, and to add some strategy to it, there's some diagonal speed lines that speed or hamper your movement in a certain direction (and move boxes that fall on them).

The second was one where everyone's in their own bubble and roll around a hexagonal (I think, can't recall) grid based floor with open sides. You roll on a hexagon, it's your coler, you roll around and cover as much as you can while others do the same, overwriting spots of yours. Bumping and pushing off the edge and such.

The last you're on some glaciar/ice cap, and coins are inside little ice structures, and you melt them with a flamethrower and grab the coin. People going after the same coin and flaming each other, etc.

I donwloaded it last night. It seemed fun, but I only played by myself so its hard to say. It consists of 3 minigames. One where you run around with flame throwers and you have to melt blocks of use with coins in them. 3 types of coins for 1, 3 or 5 points and you can also shoot the other players to knock them down. Another one where you're in the rolling ball cages and the circular platform is covered in a hex grid and you roll over the hexes to 'paint' them your color. Whoever has the most hexes at the end wins obviously, and you can knock the other players off the sides but they respawn after a short penalty. The last game has you in a little forklift thing and boxes spawn on these conveyer belts and you have to bring them back to your corner. You can also steal boxes from other peoples corners

thanks for the impressions. this game will probably suck single player. though it should be a BLAST online even if the mini games are gimmicky.

Not a bad demo. Looks reasonably close to the PC version running at the highest settings. Some small things are toned down, but in the end, it's very impressive. It also runs very well. Throughout the demo, I encountered just one area where minor slowdown occured. This feels much better than the PC game as a result.

I could never get a constant 60 fps on the PC unless I dropped my resolution into the toilet. The engine never handled slowdown well either, so the game didn't feel as good as I had hoped.

I still hate the way your viewpoint feels (not as smooth as it should be), though.

I did NOT notice any HDR, however. It may be present, but the lighting conditions pretty much kill and chance of seeing it really shine.

Interesting impressions, Dark. I feel pretty different. Game just feels unweildy and the framerate is most likely not locked at 30fps. I think I'm also just tired of this engine. It's dull and bland as hell. This game certainly doesn't show off what the 360 can do graphically. Oh well. Not for me.

It is locked at 30 fps. The only areas where that may not seem to be the case are;

1) Ladders - the framerate doesn't drop, but sliding down the ladders looks awful
2) The helicopter scene - I witnessed a drop from 30 fps at this point

Outside of that heli scene, the framerate NEVER skipped a beat. A nice improvement on the PC for me (which would have been perfect if I could have locked it at 30 fps as well).

I never played the PC version but the demo seemed very smooth to me which was nice after playing so many sub-30 360 games.

I definitely didn't notice any HDR and the game seemed very bland

FEAR demo is a pretty damn good port. Looks just as bland and shitty as the PC version does.

Yep. I played it on the OXM disc about a month ago and left with a sour taste. Shit was pretty aweful IMO.

Ran it better than on my old PC (P4 3GHz 2GB of RAM, 256MB X800Pro), but it doesn't looks next gen as Condemned. Oh well. Port's a port.

Edit: It was kinda wierd looking at this port at high resolution with AA. I played the PC version demo @ 1024x768 no AA to get decent frame rates. Almost looked like a different game because I didn't get that jaggie "texture" to the game's visuals. Too damn smooth looking compared to my PC experience. :lol

That's your OLD PC? :P

Current but built it like ages ago (the vid cards gone. Now the box is back to being a Photoshop/Painter workstation with a basic 2D card).

The reason for it having 2GB of RAM (from the get go back when 3GHz P4 was still kinda hot and new) is for Photoshop and Painter. Now I'm eyeing the Core 2 Quads in November for new mobo, CPU, RAM lovin' (and wallet killin').

Is it me or the aiming isn't as good as you'd expect. Of course it's not bad (we are not talking Far Cry here) but neither spot on like, say, Halo. Maybe I should adjust the sensitivity.

Ran better than it did on my Radeon 9800Pro two years ago when I played the exact same demo.

Would've been nice if the X360 one had at least been a different area or something. Game didn't convince me to buy it then and it doesn't now. Besides the bland areas, the bobbing movement just kills the game for me. Q4 had that too but you could turn it off in the console on the PC one (Which I did). The bobbing movement just feels like you don't have 'exact' control and it kinda gives me motion sickness or is at least uncomfortable to watch. Also the control mapping is kinda weak, the L/R on d-pad for titling is pretty unintuitive to actually use when in battles compared to Q&E.

I've always hated the control of Monolith games. They feel like you're dragging the mouse through the mud. Guess it only makes sense it would similarly suck with a controller.

Yeah, I had a little trouble with the aiming too, seemed a little off but wasn't terrible. It's a little quick. The bigger trouble is that the enemies seem to freakin blend into the walls at some points it's hard to make them out.

The control mapping is incorrect and I hope they correct it in the final game. Clicking the right stick to improve aiming while tracking enemies is beyond rediculous. The game also needs a walk option. I hate running constantly. I've played the PC version and enjoyed it very much and would be willing to give this version a go but they need to do something with the controls.

I had never played FEAR on the PC, but when i played this demo on the 360 i was like "this what people were calling the best graphics on an FPS a year ago?". It looks so bland and low poly/texture. Condemned is way better looking. What i do like is how the guns work and the particle effects system isn't bad either, though a bit overdone. The gameplay at least is fun. The look of the game is too PCish though.

Hehe, that makes quite a lot of sense actually, I was wondering what the hell was wrong :lol

Whoever is porting this game just needs to cut the Y-Axis sensitivity in half. It's such a stupidly simple fix that would make me purchase the game.

I pray this is a pre-E3 build and they've long since corrected their mistake. But that's probably expecting too much :(

It wasn't two years ago, dude. I remember playing the demo last year right before I left for Japan and then actually picking the game up at a software store over there.

Still don't like the game, but it was a big deal for a lot of people last year.

Lego Star Wars demo is definately up.

Yup. It is. It's very fun (building lego stuff could be the funnest development in platforms EVAR) but whoo boy is the camera annoying. There's no way you can take control of it, is there?

HDR is definately in place... it's just done subtly as it should be. this game and Dead Rising are showing how you really do HDR in my humble opinion. demo really impressed me compared to the PC version. whoever thought the textures had taken a hit is wacky.. and did i spy anisotropic filtering?

still, i did spot a few things. smaller sized holes punched in the walls don't stay around very long at all and will quite regularly disappear right in front of your eyes (though don't fade out either, just 'pop' gone) and the thing i didn't like about the aiming wasn't the Y sensitivity, it was how the crosshairs seem to snap to a target that comes near them. i had a shot lined up perfectly on an explosive barrel, that got tugged sideways when the helecopter guy landed next to it.

they need to do what halo does and slow aiming down when you're aiming at an enemy, not physically tug it one way or another when an enemy comes close.

apart from that, i was pretty damn happy. i'll probably gamefly it. really enjoyed the PC version and i'd play through it again in widescreen on the sofa.

The FEAR demo looks like ass in my opinion, and the movement bob seems really out of place unlike in Condemned. Apparently the demo build has been surpassed though so I'll wait and see what the reviews say.

i'm really just talking about how good a port it is. good ports are rare things and should be praised imho.

you probably think the PC version looks like ass too... where as i enjoyed the PC version's visuals. stuff looks pretty drab, but then the environments come to live in the fire fights. it's one of the things i enjoy.

I thought the PC version looked pretty good for the time, and yeah the firefights were the most impressive thing about the game by far. The level design was very repetitive though.

The PC version looked a lot crisper to me though, some excellent sharp texturing on both the characters and environments made it pop out. The 360 version seems awfully muddy in comparison but as I said it may have improved since the demo build was finalised however many months ago.

You mentioned movement bob, but it simply duplicates the PC version in that respect (looks bad regardless).

I think you should go back and compare as the two versions look very similar. They did a great job matching the PC release, but in the end, the game itself is simply boring as hell in a lot of areas (visuals, level design, etc.).

Here's an idea... Why not make an Official F.E.A.R. 360 thread? This keeps getting bumped and it's misleading.

The game sucks anyway.

Thread got bumped cause of the new Lego Star Wars demo.

What list were you referring to?
I figured 99% of the people didn't know the first post of this thread has an ongoing list of all the demos that have come out so far, and since the NBA Live 06 demo was the first demo on the marketplace ever, I thought it was strange that the new one didn't have one and wondered if I missed it.

Holy dam, the FEAR port looks bad...

I was playing it on a modest P4 3.0 with a 6800gt and it looked and ran better than that....

With whats under the hood of the 360, it shouldn't take much to run this game at a semi consistant 60fps (firefights excluded).....its like the Prey port all over again

...oh yeah, controls response left much to be desired too....

I agree, FEAR in general is boring as shit after about an hour, but this particularly just FEELS like a lamer version of an already almost marginal game FPS
