Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls For Cross-Platform Ban Program

Are people gonna need to delete every single account online that they have just so they don't get cancelled cultured?

Don't cheat and this wouldn't affect you.

CHEATERS need to be punished harsher, let the rest of us have fun.
Well, not sure if this is because Spencer said it or it is true colours showing… so far from the “nothing to hide nothing to fear rhetoric” eh ?

This is a.) not about cheaters and b.) even if it were it is blatant cartelisation + c.) how about you prioritising anti cheating in your GaaS offerings first? Ah yes, but then you risk players migrating to other consoles and services unless you can ensure players are banned everywhere and back to point b.) ;).

I think that this would be pretty difficult to get going. Also, people deserve a second chance, you can’t just ban someone from all networks based on one potential problem. Mistakes can be made and people should be able to learn and move on.

This kind of information sharing seems a bit disproportionate too if I’m honest. I don’t want Xbox sharing my information with Sony and Steam and vice versa. Seems over the top for gaming.

I’m all for banning cheaters and assholes but let’s be sensible.

You're going to have to erase your digital footprint all the way back to birth. A TikToker got cancelled for something they did when they were FIVE.

Why is everything so extreme these days.
Ban, cancel, restrict seem to be the favourite keywords. Everything is being over policed.

Calm the fuck down you people. Bunch of weak pansy fascists.

Non-violence and measurement are for strong people.

Socrates is killed every day.

Indeed, seems like everyone has no skin at this point. People need to get cut and develop tougher skin, not avoid getting cut.. how does the phrase go, what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger?

What happened to having fun at other people's expense? Survival of the fittest? The smart surviving, pushing the species forward? Take 2 steps back for every 1 step forward.

Terrible idea. People get banned for all sorts of bullshit reasons all the time, and the only refuge from that is often to move onto another platform.

I know I should expect nothing less from a creepy corporation who are recording everything you say, but I thought Phil Spencer had a sensible head on his shoulders.

I guess he's just any other corporate ghoul at the end of the day.

Please daddy corporation, fuck me harder!

Uggghh. Thankfully most companies won't bother with this. Not for moral reasons, but as long as they don't I'm not going to complain.

If you get banned on a platform, then you should only be banned on that platform. You didn't do anything wrong on the other ones, so why on Earth should you be banned on them? If you cheat/whatever on another platform after that, then you'll get banned on that platform for your actions there.

That shit would make me give up on online games for good. I have a big collection of games that I bought online, and to risk loosing everything because of some arbitrary BS. Recently, I got banned from Activision for no reason at all, just their stupid algorithm that acted out rendering all my progress and money paid to be lost without consequence for them, now image having a BS like that locking all my games across all my platforms, no way, F you Spencer, and F you Activision.

Hmmmmm, imagine for a second that if you were banned from Resetera then you were banned from NeoGAF as well.

I'm generally against any more proactive measures being taken when it comes to creating a "safer" play space for gamers. Mostly cause it's all bullshit and these companies are just clout chasing, plus unless you monitor every single lobby in every single game you're never gonna solve shit.

Sure maybe you'll weed out a handful of extremely bad ones but at the end of the day I'm still gonna get called every racist term in the book and told my mom has sucked every dick on the Westcoast while playing rocket league.

At the end of the day just ignore it, mute them, turn off chat, if anything we should be learning to not be so sensitive and quit pussifying our country and giving everyone more and more tools as adults to be tattletales online cause they weren't raised right to be prepared for life, it's ridiculous.

Perfect use case for crypto. Specifically an oracle to grab and vote on a source of truth from different data points. In this case, different platforms.

Is it really that serious? My "ban list" consists almost exclusively of the pornbots that somehow make their way onto the platforms.

Also banning across all platforms leaves no space for redemption. I think this one is a bit half baked there, Phil.

As much as I don't see this ever happening, I think it would be a great way to dissolve cheaters and hackers, lmao.
It won't really. I mean this already happens on a game by game basis and turning it into a console ban would be too harsh. AFAIK when you play call of duty you sign in with an activision account. You get banned then that account is banned on any platform. Thing is that you can just create new accounts. If they do a console ban then that just becomes too draconian because it affects other users on the console and second hand sales become a problem not knowing if a console is banned on specific games. The only way is if they do what China do and you have to give your full verified ID when online. No thanks.

Ideas like this one really aren't conducive to feeling like a valued customer. People pay to play online on console and the ability is implicit in purchased games on PC - and yet this kind of bullshit is what Spencer thinks is a good way forward. I'm probably not expressing it well, but so much of the media paints gamers as toxic, etc., and then you have Phil here thinking of ways to really stick it to people (and, of course, being cheered on by the very people who label us awful, awful gamers). Honestly disappointing to hear him talk like this. I wonder of it's one-off bad idea or the mask is slipping kind of situation.

What pornbots? Never got an unwanted message on Xbox in 15 years.

I'd rather just deal with people than ban them. Guess how many people are on my blocklists? Zero. Guild Wars 2 only ever had one person and oh god, it was deserved. I just tend to ignore people i dont like.

It's sort of like embracing an 'innocent until proven guilty system.' It's a nice way to protect innocent users, even though some scum gets through. I would rather have that than perfectly fine people suddenly banned from everything. That sounds like a nightmare.

Cross-platform ban, in the truest sense? Yes that would be sweet.

But let's face it, we all know where this is headed: cross-platform censorship and cancellations.

Well I was mainly referring to PS4...but it could be because my ps4 was hacked at one time and my home console was changed. I had to live with that for 6 months.
I thought you had experience on all platform, because you said platforms. Well on PS4 i got like 5-6 unwanted messages, but also no porn. Just some advertising. Still weird, because i was not hacked and only my friends had my name.
