Xbox Gamescon Media Briefing / Showcase

Sorry if this has been covered, but now that indies can self publish are they going to be allowed to release whenever they are ready and for the price they want? Or is MS going to force their time slot system on those self publishing as well?

Retro City Rampage I remember passing certification for every platform months before MS because they seemingly wanted it to release at a certain time.

Many consumers will see the FIFA logo all over the box (instead of the other console box) and get it.

They won't do the math in their heads.

So yeah, it is a pretty big deal.

EDIT: for some reason I'm assuming your not from Europe. Not sure why but core of my post remains same although I will dance a silly jig if you're actually from Europe.

Can't speak to US but I think you're selling us European's short there.

MS is fighting a situation where in UK FIFA on 360 slightly outsells PS3 and outside UK FIFA tends to sell hugely better on PS3 vs 360.

This is a good move - but I'm pretty sure as a European the impact is going to be modest at best overall and weak outside UK. I could be wrong but the momentum MS is trying to overcome is huge and let's face it, a lot of European countries can even make use of the deal until 2014.

In the end in Europe it's still cheaper to pick up a PS4 and FIFA than with Xbox and I think the general buying community will be perfectly aware of the difference.

I'd note that in all likely hood the exclusive content for Legends will be assumed by most to be timed exclusive only and that it'll hit Sony platform further down the line.

Not trying to pour water on the fire but in all honesty while a good move - particularly from a positive PR point of view - I really doubt this will deliver a huge swing for MS in Europe.

I personally think the positive result for MS will be to bring forward sales - i.e. I think a lot of people who were interesting in Xbox 1 in Europe have been deferring to see how the dust settles on all the issues and now MS has given them a good reason to buy now.

But for anyone who was already Sony centric in Europe (which is the majority of the console install base after all in terms of Sony vs MS) I doubt this is enough to cause many converts.

We don't know, and I don't think we will until some time later.

These kind of 'devil in the detail' terms & conditions are never revealed to us, just as neither company will tell us how much their dev-kits actually cost to developers. ( none of that free dev kit/loaners fluff )

Or they can trade in their FIFA game and buy PS4 version earlier for cheaper with no preorder restriction and a physical version.

I'm talking about 360 owners who are already affiliated with the Xbox brand with their friends lists built up and existing Live subscriptions. People seem to be forgetting this is still a factor. All of my friends which you could say are "dudebro" gamers with 360s are super hyped by this announcement. Myself I'm not a fan of Fifa so it does nothing for me.

your friends list doesn't carry over. Nothing does.

Covert to a higher price for the same content? I don't think so

The problem with this is that the PS4 will, in all likelihood, be available two weeks (or more) earlier. And FIFA 14 will be available at the same time. Which means that even if they don't have an actual timed exclusive of it, they have a practical one.

So those box logos won't be relevant. Because the people interested in getting a next gen FIFA that don't care about price, will care about timing, and if they can get one sooner and cheaper (on a more powerful system, no less), then they will.

Depends on how wide the news spreads itself. It could already get people locked in to things before the launch of any consoles.

Also, "more powerful system" doesn't mean anything in terms of this. We are taking about an early EA Sports game. It's going to look the same on both consoles.

So what was the game that the IGN guys said the Xbox One trailer made them laugh (in a good way)?

I'm assuming it wasn't the Fighter Within trailer... unless they were laughing at the cringeworthy acting.

This is good news for them, but these people would have bought a Xbox One anyway regardless of FIFA being free. Anyway a lot of people I know are switching system. Live isn't like Facebook or iOS, nextgen you do keep friend's list and achievements, friends lists don't matter as your friends cam decide to get a PS4 also XBLA games don't carry over. And I haven't heard FIFA or COD having good cross platform Multiplayer between Xbox One and 360.

MS still not announcing a launch date leads me into believing that they are waiting for Sony's info later on today to try and react.

Could they though? Could they have an earlier launch? I don't see how it would be possible if the late Oct. rumors about the PS4 are true.

they could launch on par or a week later, but who knows, first we should know if Sony announces the release date

By the time that FIFA pack-in hits the store shelves in the Tier 2 countries the European league seasons will be at least half-over.

I just can't shake the feeling that MS paying for all this "exclusive" content is like a baseball player using steroids. Buying a win because you can't on a level playing field.
And if I hear only on Xbox one more time, I'm going to vomit on the person sitting in the seat next to me.

They are not the only ones doing it. Look at the Sony deals for the likes of Watch Dogs.

Pre-orders don't lock anybody into anything. With the PS4 launching first, it would be easy to just cancel an Xbox One pre-order if they decided to buy a PS4 instead. And the point was that the box logos wouldn't be what did it. Even if the box logos convinced people to pre-order, when the PS4 is actually available sooner and FIFA with it, availability > logos, especially when the price is cheaper even when buying them separately.

The point is, while box logos will be pretty, any difference they would make is in post-launch sales when both systems are on the shelf. The promotion is only for pre-orders. Which means that box logos reflecting this promotion won't really make a difference at all. On the other hand, the availability of a PS4 and FIFA weeks in advance (months in advance in some EU countries), in combination with still being cheaper will matter significantly more.

The "more powerful system" comment was probably unnecessary on my part, since I don't really want to get into that debate. But the point wasn't really that it would mean much to this specific game (although I'd be surprised if it didn't have at least some minor performance gains), but that we aren't just talking about the sale of a single game. We're talking about the sale of a console as well. It might get bought for a single game initially, but there will be expectations of what can be expected from it in the future when deciding which platform to buy, and superior multiplats is a selling point.

E - for me, there was nothing intresting, maybe KI but their price model sucks, so well not convinced to buy that system, actually it does look worse than at E3. No F because they at least put some effort (money) to get some deals.

They're waiting again for Sony to announce it first.

if they have limited stock or yield problems and can't launch until mid-late november, then if Sony announce in October they can't react.

Best they can hope for is that by not announcing, they don't give Sony the luxury of choosing a later release date (eg late october/early november)

They're waiting again for Sony to announce it first.

Why, so they can announce they are releasing after the PS4? What good will that do? If the rumors we've been hearing have any ounce of truth to them, there is no way MS can simply change its release date to at or before Sony's. They need every manufacturing day they can get.

Edit: I am really not liking reactionary MS.

I wonder if it is just more of a case of not wanting another $499 vs 399 incident like at E3.

I bet you they announce a later release date when the hype dies down about when the PS4 is coming out.

Announcing a later release date and giving Sony the stage and the eyes that makes Sony seem more ready is a bad look for Microsoft.

Side-by-side comparisons that Microsoft won't win are a bad move from a PR perspective. You also won't hear them talk about the GPU and type of RAM for that same reason.

Oh yeah, and I'm totally convinced the Xbox One is build with the European market in mind, good job addressing that by just handling out a free copy of Fifa at launch, lol

If you go that road, we can say that Halo is a response to Half-Life, Tribes, Unreal. COD/BF/MOH is a response to Counter-Strike and Rainbow Six. Forza is a response to Gran Turismo

You could say that, but you'd just be wrong.

Halo was announced as a mac game back in 99; unless MS retroactively started development prior to actually acquiring the company to go up against non-existent contenders in a historically weak genre, you're seriously grasping at straws.

That's not even considering that you're lumping together games that have nothing in common: Tribes is completely different from both Unreal and HL, Unreal shares at best the same genre as HL. The same goes for COD which is a completely different game from BF1942 and neither has anything in common with CS, other than guns I guess. And no one played Rainbow Six, you don't really need to counter failures..
