I picked up ESPN NFL 2K5 last week, and the game came with a subscription card for two months of Xbox Live. Do I need to buy a Live starter kit to use that code to go online and play?

No, but I would suggest getting a headset. You do need a credit card to sign up for the free account.

For Xbox Live you need:

Broadband
A credit card (gift cards won't work, need to be a real credit/debit card with a logo, Paypal DOES work)

It shouldn't be difficult to find a Communicator headset. I see them for $30 at Target
