Xbox Mini Announced

surely they're going to drop the price before the xbox one launch. so why wait? It's the quiet months now so a price drop alongside the new model would create a little spike in sales.

Gotta be $199 or less right?

For someone still on his 1st refurb launch 360 that is large, loud, and doesn't have HDMI out, does anyone know what the deal on HDDs will be on the mini? Can you still get/add ones in the special enclosures, or is it non upgradeable (or though I doubt it, can you actually throw in any old SATA drive)?

I would not be surprised if they drop the price of the new 360 in September/October. I vaguely recall MS did the same thing the year the 360 slim was released.

Im interested since I still regularly play my super loud Opus 360.

Best bet would be to be a 4gb Slim and put your old HDD in there. Theyll probably on sale soon to make space for the new model.

Hmmm

Given how the last half of this generation has played out for both consoles, I honestly feel Sony was much stronger with their IPs. Plus you have The Last of Us, and Beyond. GTA V and Phantom Pain are on both. I would think that if you were going to get a system now it would be PS3.

What else is coming out for 360 (not multiplat) besides that Tanks game?

there's really nothing mini about it.

it's smaller, but mini needs to be like wii status mini. something tiny.

it's obviously cheaper for MS to produce than the slim or else they wouldn't have bothered creating it.

it's priced horrendously though. you would think they would have just released a single 250gb version @ $199 MAX, but they kept the pricing the same which is horrible. MS is still milking the 360 till the very last drop

considering to buy the new version since there is a deal at a local store.

does anyone know if I can transfer data from the old fat via usb or preferably online?
(if I log in on the new xbox with my account can I just redownload all content?)

EDIT: Damn, there are two threads for the new Xbox? Actually my question was answered there. Sorry for confusion.

It's without an optical port and loses a USB slot too. Apologies if said earlier.

Why the hell would they remove the optical port?! I couldn't game without it. Puzzled.

You get less for the same price in a smaller box, what a deal.

I'll need to get one of these regardless, my launch unit's DVD-rom is having trouble ejecting. Knowing how I could transfer my games and saves over would be great..

Guess they save a few bucks in production this way.

For this reason the slim is the better choice imho, especially since their retail price is the same but due to the deal I can get the new model for 40 EUR less than the slim and with a bigger HDD so I won't complain since I neither need the additional USB port nor the optical out.

Holy sheepshit.

The prices of these things might be understandable if they had a respectable amount of storage (say 250GB and 500GB). I mean, they would still probably be too high because it's really past time for a price drop, but I could at least understand why the pricing didn't change. $200 for a 4GB though is just hilarious. The fucking original Xbox had more storage than that in 2001. So awful.

fuck me. so less storage, same size, no optical out, less usb ports, and the exact same price as the old 360. NICE FUCKING JOB.

These boxes aren't going to reach 99 for a very long time (maybe never). That's the price of launching with high end hardware and the additional price of losing multiple billions of dollars and wanting to make it back at some point.

Price is still a joke this late in the gen.

Not with them launching a $500 new machine this holiday.

The industry saw and took note of the 3DS getting its market share cannibalized by a significantly cheaper DS, to the point Nintendo eventually massively cut down production on the system in order to cauterize the wound and get the 3DS moving.

Because of this you probably won't be able to buy the good model 360 at a decent price for another 18-36 months. Same goes for sony with the PS4. I mean think about it: a $400 PS4 is a much easier sell to a consumer when the PS3 is sitting next to it @ $250-$300.

Doesn't it make much more sense to connect your surround set to the TV and have the audio signal passed through via HDMI? You only need one connection that way instead of having to juggle cables between consoles and BD players.

Very few TVs will pass through the original 5.1 signal. You almost always get a down-mixed 2 channel signal doing what you describe.

That is one ugly looking console. I hope the original 4G is around when I look for one. It was all matte. Hate glossy with a passion.

Honestly it seems like it's way easier to get the old slim as opposed to the new "mini"

Just looking on GAME and Amazon those are the ones being sold instead of this one.

I wonder if that's because they're not discontinuing the old ones (they seem a more attractive option right now, and cheaper)

4GB should really be £99/$129 at this point though, hopefully this holiday, that'll see it to the end of its days.

My solution to the problem: AV Receiver with HDMI out, so all consoles go into the receiver the video signal goes from the receiver to the TV.

But yeah it sucks that the optical out is gone since some (expensive 7.1) headsets use it and not everyone wants to buy a new audio receivers simply because MS cuts out an option for you to wire up your hardware at home.

no option for the dongle? forgive if this is an outdated question, I'm still rockin a 2008 falcon with HDMI to my TV and optical via dongle to receiver

Microsoft did not include an optical audio port on the back of the redesigned 360 nor did it include the AV Connector port (where you/I get optical out on the fat 360). So you can only get 5.1 out if you have an HDMI audio receiver or if you are lucky enough to have a TV that will passthrough 5.1 out the TV's optical audio jack (most don't).

my guess is GTA 5 requires 8gb install, mini comes with 4gb.

Dont see the issue because there are already core Xbox 360s out there with 4gb, just get a USB stick or a bigger HD.

Can you actually install games on USB sticks? I know you can use them for gamesaves, videos etc but?..

You can't use the install game feature of the dashboard to install a game to a USB stick. That's a hard drive only thing.

But GTAV isn't using that feature. It installs the 2nd disc to the USB drive like it is DLC.
