Xbox One breaks pre-order records at Blockbuster

Holy $hit the XBONE US based defense force will be strong as hell this gen. I swear the "Cumbaya my XBox" singing circles will be posted on YouTube, Twiter and Facebook then circulated around the US based gaming media to bring the troops together and keep them strong...

Nobody will debate that they will be #1 in the US; they will be by a large margain.... With that being said, gamers are able to say how shitty MS's anti-consumer stances are shaping up next gen... It's the good old 800 lb gorilla in the room and they know they can have their way with you, so if you must, just break out the KY and make it easier for yourself, but please don't preach it's not true what they are doing or it's not a bad thing for gamers.....

I don't understand most of this post. But, how did you reach the conclusion that XBO would be the king in the US next gen? That is quiet the giant assumption.

The OP refers to the UK stores.

Well, I'm just generalizing there. Some of the comments I've seen in threads lately is crazy. US, UK either way, but man oh man, the mithral armor and shields are up with full power along with the megaphones...

I'm just guaging that off general feedback I've seen and heard in the market. I did a random straw pole while at work the past week or so as well. I should post the findings in a thread, but I did it for my own fun/interest. It's not looking good for Sony so far (regardless or price) but this was a small sample I could be totally wrong as well, but people need to chill a little here and not be blind. Just accept the faults and move on...

Yeah, I don't get it either. MS delivers a lot of really good apps for the US market, but I think each gen USA, UK and Europe are wide open.

Japan... that's a different story.

I feel you, bro. Here's a recent crazy comment I saw in a console thread:

Yep. I'm not saying I'd be shocked if MS did "win". But, like you said, I think every generation is pretty much a reset. If people stuck with their company of choice the N64 should have destroyed the PSX and the PS3 should have destroyed the 360.

LOL, all in good fun. I'll just let the blind lead the blind and I'll be entertained watching.

It's a very easy assumption to make, assuming you live in the US and know tons of average joe gamers. It's important to point out that "average joe gamers" are not GAF, they don't read gaming news, and hell, they rarely if ever read game reviews. They know what they like and buy what they like, damn the high falutin games that don't involve shooting things or re-enacting sports.

Then there's the topic of younger US gamers who were born around the PS2/Xbox 1 era. Those kids have no idea what a PlayStation is. I have two PS3s, and my kids are only tangentially aware they play games. They are used for only Blu Rays and Netflix, and in my neighborhood and circle of family/friends, that is the norm.

So Sony is dead to these people. No surprise there. What is worrying is the state of Nintendo. My house, and one other family I know have Wii Us. That is it. They are rarely played, in favor of Xbox 360s and iPod Touches.

I get a feeling in the pit of my stomach when it comes to this upcoming generation. I am really hoping for the success of the Xbone and PS4, but I have a feeling the PS4 is not going to sell and it's probably end of days for Sony. We will see. I hope I'm wrong.

Wait... Blockbuster, a business about renting movies/games, is selling a console that won't let people rent games anymore. The fuck?

Also, I'm surprised Blockbuster still exists. I thought they closed down all of their stores.
Most likely MS will work out a deal with them to rent games since they revenue share.

The standard business model for video rental stores was that they would pay a large flat fee per video, approximately US$65, and have unlimited rentals for the lifetime of the medium itself. Sumner Redstone, whose Viacom conglomerate then owned Blockbuster, personally pioneered a new revenue-sharing arrangement for video in the mid-1990s. Blockbuster obtained videos for little cost and kept a 60 percent rental fee, paying the other 40 percent to the studio, and reporting rental information through Rentrak. What Blockbuster got out of the deal, besides a lower initial price, was that movies were not available for sale during an initial release period, at least not at an affordable price point – customers either had to rent, wait, or buy the film on tape at the much higher Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price targeted at other rental chains and film enthusiasts, at that time then between $70–100 before the end of the initial release period.

Would not be difficult for Blockbuster in the UK to beat previous Console preorders seeing as since the last round of consoles most of their competition have gone out of business;

Woolworths, Choices, Gamestation, Virgin megastore, various indies and reduced store count for HMV and Game.

Say what?....your kids aren't a barometer for the nation. How does Ps3 manage to sell every month if no one care knows or cares about it. I think you are just projecting your personal feelings about sony onto everyone else.

Blockbuster has revealed that since its announcement last week the Xbox One has broken all previous pre-order launches in Blockbuster’s 24-year history.

“We are delighted by the huge number of pre orders that we have received so far for the new Microsoft console,” the retailer’s head of games James Morton stated.

Blockbuster provides no actual numbers ( for this pre-order or the previous 24 years )? It's hard to put this statement in context. Having some sense of the magnitudes would be rather helpful.

Unless MS has a runaway success like the wii, which I only see them doing wth price...I think they are destined for lower marketshare in the US. They won't enjoy a year headstart. They won't pull in 8 million to sony's zero. Theyll sell neck and neck..perhaps with a slight lead, but overall a slight lead is a loss compared to this gen. And that's not taking into account all this bad PR.
They're going to sell some systems, but I haven't seen anything that's set to propel them forward like the wii....of course e3 is around the corner. I don't think their lineup, however good, will skyrocket them that far ahead.

While you are okay with giving your login info for people to play your borrowed games others are not. Getting banned next gen has a shitload of new negatives.

Well they don't have my log in information.

Paranoid much? Get better friends I guess.

well, the record might be really low.

here's reality, 99% of gamers don't even know or care about DRM.

But they will. Once word of mouth extends beyond the gaming forums and once some of these people start shopping for used games at GameStop for their new system or they attempt to trade in some games to be able to afford the next installment of Dog of Duty, it will become crystal clear. Once they see the obvious graphical improvements on their friend's machine, it will become crystal clear. Once they realize that their Internet outage had resulted in no more gaming, it will become crystal clear.

Preorders are going to be big on the Xbox, no question. But people will also start to realize the negatives.

It's not like the PS3 got its ass kicked this gen. Sony's next system is riding off a decent bit of positive gains in the Playstation mindshare from the past few years. And I think Sony's First Party games shown at E3 will look quite a bit better than Microsoft's from a graphical standpoint.

it's still a thing over here, but closed down half of its stores in March

still, lol. Don't know what to make of this

They may not know what DRM is specifically, but I'm sure the ability to rent, sell, and buy used games however they want, is something the typical gamer/family participates in.

Honestly I didn't think you could pre-order Consoles there. 8 years ago when we did this (and Blockbuster still existed) they didn't have any preorders. Hell almost noone did because the shipment numbers were so low.

I know most everyone else is saying the same thing, but this is mind-boggling to me. I thought you might be able to rent consoles at Blockbuster, but not preorder/buy them...and I thought every Blockbuster I knew of had been shut down so I didn't know they were even still in business.

Lol with all the 'hiding your head in a hole' comments in here, I can't wait for the inevitable 'Why is Sony lagging behind the XB1?!?!?!1' thread that's going to pop up in a years time.

I live next door to a Blockbuster store in the UK.

An no, no one buys games there. The games are usually massively overpriced to the point of lunacy. I was in there the other day and they are selling Borderlands 2 new, for £39.99.

I purchased it from steam for £10.

This is the same store that, on a games release day, they open up all the cases and remove the online passes, presumably so that someone can sell them on Ebay.

I actually tested this by renting 2 copies of AC the day it came out, on two different platforms. Both were missing the pass, store guy just shrugged and said he didn't know, piece of shite that he is.

Thats most likely because only the first person using the game would be able to redeem the online pass. Also if they left them in the cases some customer could just go to each blockbuster and take them all, then sell them.
