Xbox One: Button mapping coming to all controllers.

the controllers get firmware updates, doesn't that mean they have some memory?

That doesn't mean this memory is being used to store button mappings.

It also doesn't mean that button mappings necessarily introduce lag. Even if it does, it would be so minuscule.

I guess if there was space left over sure, but it's probably not safe to assume it until they confirm it. Does the PS4 have any noticeable delay?

It sort of does, but it might not be big enough to make a difference. I think Mike said on the Major Nelson podcast that the memory on the Elite controller allows them to have 0 extra lag when converting the signals.

Huh. I would think there would already be a level of ambiguity in the system software that maps button signals to in-game button presses. Perhaps not, though.

I don't know how much I'll use this feature, but it's still cool nonetheless. It would be nice if they allowed button mappings on a game by game basis at the system OS level. Don't like the button mappings on a game, then change it and it will only affect that game.

I'm guessing you have to go into the Settings menu to actually switch between profiles? As in, it doesn't detect which game you're playing and automatically change.

I'm sure if people make noise about that, they'll surely fix it?

In any case, nice to see both consoles have gotten key binds.

Although I don't see myself using this much, I know there have been cases where I wished I could map a certain button to say...a bumper instead.

Great that they're finally doing this, and respect to Sony for doing this as well already. Fully customizable controller settings is nothing but the right way to go IMO.

Shit, I forgot this was in PS...
Now, how easy would it be to attach custom configuration to certain games? Come on. Go all the way.

You can save 255 different game profiles in the app. On the elite controller you can then load any two of them to the controller itself.

It would be nice though if you could then link each saved profile to a game so it switches to it automatically upon launch.

Throw it on Uservoice.

This was the one thing I wanted from the Elite controller so I could remake the Destiny Bumper Jumper control scheme in Halo 5 (which 343 doesn't seem to want to give it's players as a default).

Elite preorder canceled, wooo!

FYI - you can get hair trigger shooting in Destiny by swapping the bumpers and triggers in-game, and then re-mapping bumpers and triggers in the Xbox OS.

source: that's how it works on PS4.

Does the XB1 version of Destiny let you swap RT/LT and RB/LB?

Serious question as I never felt a need to swap around buttons: any of you guys using it on PS4? If yes then for what game and what gets swapped?

i just want to be able to hold a button down to start recording. There are too many hoops between "hey i want to record stuff" and actually starting a recording.

eh, i've never really used it on the PS4 but on the Vita it can be a life saver for certain games. rather have the option that not have it.

This is not surprising but it's great news. It's all done on the machine, so limiting to the new controllers would have been mostly artificial.

This is great for those games which refuse to give button layouts worth a damn :P it would be great if the new dash allowed quick profile swapping using it's overlay at will.

Better late than never, but I could have really used this 13 years ago.

I felt like I was growing a 3rd hand when trying to play that game.
