Techland’s upcoming zombie survival open world game, Dying Light is already confirmed to be running at 1080p and locked 30 frames per second on both the PS4 and Xbox One. So was Dying Light using the latest Xbox One SDK update to achieve this performance boost on Microsoft’s console?
“We were using the latest version just prior to the new release that came out on December 12th. In terms of advantages, the main thing is just how much the ESRAM control has improved,” Lead Game Designer Maciej Binkowski said to GamingBolt.
“The new API allows you to do a lot more with the ESRAM, things devs have always wanted to do but were not easily accessible. This together with better tools (PIX) allowed us to really improve performance and tweak ESRAM usage,” he added.
For those who are unaware, PIX i.e. Performance Investigator for Xbox is a software tool for game developers that helps them analyze and debug their code to improve performance of Direct3D applications. It’s intriguing to see that Microsoft have been making further updates to their SDK which has already helped several AAA games like Destiny and Grand Theft Auto 5 to achieve full 1080p resolution. It seems that with continuous improvements to both consoles, the performance gap is indeed narrowing down.

If this gets Phantom Pain up to 900p , then Phil Spencer has my sword, my axe, and my bow.

Considering GZ's performance on modest pcs I don't think TTP should be much of a concern for X1.

Good to see the developing tools the 360 was once famed for are now starting to work as intended on the new console.

Let's hope we have some tech talk not involving "closing the gap" and whatnot xD

I hope this regular SDK Update will mark some improvements on older titles if possible. Always good to see MS constantly updating the Dash stuff and the development software.

Those games would have to be updated to take advantage of the SDK update. I just don't see that happening. :(

It would be nice to see Titanfall get a res-bump even this late in the game, though.

They would have to patch them, I doubt many (if any) devs will do that.

Only things that are still being updated/played will use them, perhaps Killer Instinct will eventually get another resolution bump, or Project Spark will get better optimisations etc that will help it in the future, but I doubt anything out last fall or earlier will get updated.

What will be interesting is how Halo 5 evolves over the next year. We've got the beta now, but we'll likely get another one for other multiplayer stuff and then the final game next holiday...

I honestly think that Phil and/or others at MS are really keeping an eye on it after previous Fox Engine games. A big 2015 game like Phantom Pain at 720p would be pretty bad news.

Yup. I foresee demands of 1080p through use of force!

Does that mean Ground Zeros is sub-900p? Cause I picked it up for $6 on that sale and it looks amazing. I honestly couldn't tell.

It's an HD resolution...

720p.

...are also likely improving SDK tools and whatnot but not making a fuss about it because they don't have console small-man syndrome this generation.

I don't see MS making a fuss here... Techland said about the optimisations of esram, not Microsoft.

Re: Ground Zeroes. It was 720p, but also 60fps with launch tools which we know were shitty. Looking at how things have improved: 10% Kinect reserve, further optimisations, better tools all round and every other game being 900p or 12(3)XX x 1080 (Halo 2A, FC4, CODAW) I'm not concerned about TPP

Meanwhile at Sony...

First losing November and December, and now the gap is closed. Mattrick's full plan is coming to fruition. The DRM and $500 price was just a trap to lull Sony to sleep.

"Performance gap is narrowing!"

*Gives example of GTA5 which has clear GPU superiority for PS4*

Resolution and framerate don't make things equal pals. There's no overcoming a GPU disparity of 50 percent.

How can they do that and not mess up snappable games like nutjitzu?

Theres only 2: Threes and Nutjitsu.

I guess the question is whether both of them use all the power available. Threes is a simple (but great) game, Nutjitsu isn't exactly complicated... I don't know if it has been updated though.

Woah, so wait, it was going to be 720p without this? Fuckkkk, glad I know that.

Ill have to get it on my PS4 that I intend to buy someday. Or PC if that ever happens.

Nothing has been said about TPPs resolution, we don't even know when its out.
