XBOX ONE owners, Energy-Saving Mode or Instant-On Mode?

Which do you folks use? I seem to jump back and forth. I must say though, it is super awesome when I turn on my XBO the next day and I boot up the last game I played and it takes me right where I was when I turned off the console.

Energy saving for me, I don't mind the boot-up. I'm a fan of a fresh boot. The Instant-On is essentially the 'always-on' that MS talked about that everybody was up in arms about.

It's similar to those cable boxes that never turn off, but I just don't like my devices always-on.

Instant On. Don't know if I should switch. I just got my Xbox One this month and haven't seen my electric bill with it. That will determine what mode I use going forward. Does it consume a lot of power in Instant On mode?

What the hell are you talking about?

Instant On. Can you even get updates with Energy Saving Mode?

The only thing I hate is there is a faint whizzing sound in my gaming room from the Xbox One power supply always being on.

I don't think he understands what he's talking about. Standby mode =/= always connected online.

It works just like a PC. It places RAM in a low power state... really not a big deal unless you dislike having electronics kept on.

Instant On for me almost always, only time I choose Energy Saving is when I know I'll be away from home for a while,

Have it set to instant-on now, people are using it to switch on the TV and AV receiver with Kinect. And for easy access to TV apps, the few that are available.

Still uses a bit too much power.

Energy saving. I don't use the Kinect, I keep it plugged in just for the auto sign in. And I don't like leaving my electronics on, I unplug everything when I'm done with it.

My power brick is hidden behind the entertainment cabinet so I don't hear the sound from it so I keep mine on Instant On.

Didn't they engineer (as well as the PS4) so it uses a tiny amount when suspended?

My XB1 is preferred in Energy-saving mode is what I'm talking about.

People were annoyed about having to connect their consoles to the Internet every 24 hours. When did anybody ever complain about power constantly being supplied to the console?

I love the instant on. I always have the updates to my games and such and I get to yell at my xbox to turn on when I get in the door from work. It is so nice that when I get to my living room the thing is already booted up and ready half the time (The other half it didn't hear me because the door is kinda far.)

Edit: I would like to add one thing though. I think there is some sort of memory leak or cache problem with the X1 in always on. This is because every week or so I have to do the hard reset by holding in the button because something or other isn't working, be it party chat or the black screen.

I was playing Assassins Creed 4, and paused it mid-mission before leaving for the weekend. When I got back, after work on Monday evening said "Xbox On". The TV turned on, the receiver turned on, and there I was, right at the pause screen where I left off.

Instant On is a game changer for me. It also makes shorter gaming sessions much more palpable knowing I can just fire right back up where I left off.

It won't have a huge affect on your bill. The aggregate power usage across the entire install base is really wasteful, though.

Both PS4 and XB1 use way too much power in their Instant On standby modes. They should both be embarrassed.

Isn't this the purpose? Energy being provided to the console 24/7 allowing an Internet connection 24/7.

Connected EVERY 24 hours? if THATS the case, I'm mistaken, but I thought it was all about an always on, always connected environment.

While I agree with your first part, I disagree with the second to the extent that I tested it. How low should it be? The extra draw was very small. I would give you the exact figure, but it was so small that I just disregarded it and the testing equipment was on loan from the library for some energy awareness week thing so I can't go test it again at the moment.

Instant on is awesome. Sadly the XBone gets into weird states sometimes where it needs to be hard rebooted, hopefully they fix that.

This is why I am in energy-saving mode, because the XB1 has done this to me a few times.

A fresh boot avoids this, 'for those who don't know what I'm talking about'

Instant on. Not only it starts instantly but it also download stuff in the background so I don't have to wait for updates when I want to play.

I use energy saving mode only because the power brick makes a very faint buzzing noise, and my room is small with my computer and Xbox One right next to each other. The noise becomes a little distracting at times.

Otherwise I would use Instant On. Used that for the first week or two and it was very cool and convenient.

Instant On all the time. It's never not sweet to say Xbox On and have my tv and receiver light up and it's running before I even sit down.

Although it never seems to be downloading patches which I would have thought to be a feature of it always being on. I don't mind the giant patches until I hit the game and it wants to update right then.

Instant on. Makes the console more enjoyable to use.

Coming home from a long day of work, saying "Xbox, On", and then having my Xbox One & whole A/V setup turn on with the game I was playing 12+ hours ago on the screen right where I left it never gets old.

...Can literally get into a game in less than 15 seconds.

For a while I turned on the energy saving mode, but I'm not a fan for waiting so long for it to turn on and I actually like being able to walk into the room and have my TV, receiver, and xbox all turn on with a voice command.

So for the ones using instant on, how is the resume play function working for you guys?

Edit: Oh, I see that there is no more (BETA) behind that option after installing the March update.

That's the game changer for me. Such a cool idea and to have it work is just awesome.

it blew me away when I woke up this morning and thought I would do some of Kenways Fleet stuff in Assassins Creed IV before heading off to work. And boom, the game was right where I had left it, in the Captains cabin.

It should be about a watt or two. The XB1 draws 15W in standby. The PS4 draws about 10W.

Edit: By way of comparison, the 27" imac draws about 1W in standby. The new Mac Pro draws about 3W.

power saving as we turn off all plugs in our home before sleeping unless something important stays on, might explain the stupid reasons for not having the latest xbox one dashboard installed yet...
