Xbox One: The best-selling console in America.

Why bring up old consoles to make a very flaud point? PS2 is old and 3ds has at least a 2 year head start. Since you brought up PS2 isn't PS4 almost in line with PS2 sales in same time frame?

'The World's Best-selling Console' implies that it has sold better than any other console - or at least any console currently on the market. It hasn't. So a helpful little asterisk wouldn't go amiss.

I was also showing pedantry goes both ways, but people seem to be ignoring that part of my post.

The 3DS isn't even considered a console.

Seriously?

Just a quick anecdote.

Saturn (a German retailer) offered the Xbox One S with FIFA and a second controller for 230€. I can sell my old Xbox One for 200€ pretty easily and I don't want FIFA and I can sell that too so I went for it. Nice machine, Forza Horizon 3 in 4K looks amazing.

However, while I was paying for the Xbox One the clerk - and I'm not making this up - asked me why I was buying an Xbox One. Not in a hostile way, more in a playful "what'cha doing there brah" way. I laughed and we talked about games a bit. He told me they had issues moving Xbox One S and PS4 Slim stock while the PS4 Pro was just flying off the shelves. I have not seen a single PS4 Pro reatil until these days. It's like a ghost.

So yeah, situation is still bad in Germany. I got Gears 4 and Horizon 3 bundled together for 50€ so I'm not complaining.

For all the flak Microsoft gets for misleading marketing, Sony comes right on out with their own with an ad that makes it look like the PS4 Pro is the best selling console in the world.

What? They say that the PS4 is the world's best-selling console. Which it is.

That ad could easily be misconstrued as the Pro being the best selling console.

We KNOW it's all one PS4 family of devices, I'm purely talking about thy ad and h W it could easily be misconstrued, hence, misleading. It's all irrelevant and means nothing. I'm merely pointing it out because why not?

Not really and no where near as misleading as MS in their ads, also under that best selling statement it shows just the PS4 logo only in the bubble, lastly PS4 Pro is a PS4.
They just sticked that bubble to remind people Playstation 4 is the best selling console currently

How so?
It is clearly showing PS4 only in blue circle where it say world best selling console!
Also PS4 Pro is a PS4 where did they mislead?

I can't wait for all the attempts to make Sony's slightly deceptive ad be conflated to the same level of deception as what MS has done with their ads.

It's gonna be great.

It's kind of funny how when Sony creates misleading ads, there always seems to be a valid excuse for it. But when Microsoft creates misleading ads, bring out those pitchforks and torches.

"It's not misleading on the same level! There are levels!"

So the PS4 has over 150M sales now?

Without timeframes (Gen 8 for example) it's easy to be mislead into believing PS4 has sold more than the PS2.

Sony deserves more flack! Is this how it works? I mean MS got a lot of shit for "misleading" when they clearly stated the timeframe.

or marketing people doing marketing.. who would have thought. This shit is ridiculous on both sides

Trust me, this thread getting the bump it did gave me a right good chuckle and that's a truthfact :)

Yeah, the bump was obviously meant to stir up something imo.

Nothing funny at all. People on both sides are always going to flip their shit. It's disingenuous to behave as if only MS or Sony catches shit for it. We've got plenty of corporate defenders on gaf for either side tbh.

Look at the replies to my post. Already there.

It's all bullshit. Ads are misleading, more news at 11. As long as words are carefully chosen and it's not technically FALSE advertising, then play ball.

Both Microsoft's and Sony's ads easily fall under the banner of misleading in one way or another. Microsoft just has more experience and are better at spin so their ads straddle the line of false far better.

god I really don't give a shit about pointing out misleading ads and why they are technically accurate but "best selling" does not mean "most sold"

The 3DS isn't selling better than the ps4. I pretty sure the ps4 has been selling better than 3DS since launch when you consider 3DS is at ~60 million after nearly 6 years and ps4 is at ~50 million after 3 years. It has sold more over all but ps4 will pass it soon. Present to me some math or data showing 3DS being better selling.

Are you suggesting that all deception (which these ads definitely are) are at the same level?

Like, lol. I feel that was a dig at me, just not a very good one.

What's best selling then? fastest? That's Wii then isn't it? (Genuine question)

Honestly I don't really care tbh.. I think the whole thing is ridiculous on both sides, marketing department is gonna market. The way people react sometimes is almost like it's not their job to make their product look better than the rest.

So wait, does any of this mean my games at home somehow improved or got worse? No? Can't find a reason to care then.

Deception is deception. Saying there are "levels" of deception, and then trying to differentiate the deception, is just making an excuse for your chosen company. Its all arbitrary.

no * needed

EItaiSM.png

I think the * is actually the word "Pro" after PS4.

When it's talking about world sales...it only says PS4...when it's talking about most Powerful..it says PS4 Pro.

But yup...this AD is suppose to be about the PS4 PRO..and they snuck in PS4 stats.

If they wanted to do that, without looking deceiving...they should've said Worlds Leader in Game/Software Sales or something....because that can relate to BOTH PS4 Pro and PS4 Regular.

You're too obvious.

It's not even in the same ballpark here. It clearly states "PS4" when stating "best selling console".

Again, no need for "*" here, and it's also nowhere near a "The ONLY console with HDR ...pause ... 4K Upscaling ... pause... 4K Streaming ... pause ... And Blu Ray 4K player."

first thought i had reading some of these posts

gotta make it us vs them!
They're both fantastic consoles. Xbox had a great couple of months, which is good, they deserve it after the shit-show of a launch of which they pulled through. The PS4 was fantastic since inception and they deserve the success they've had.

Let's all be happy we have a healthy console market.

Why do y'all struggle to realize the Vanilla and Pro are the same system.

Doesn't help silly arguments.

Best post here. I enjoy both. Xbox is doing some good shit to make up for their rocky start.

Like, it's cool that you consider all deception the same. But saying it's arbitrary because someone else finds one ad not as misleading as another is ridiculous.

Not all deception, nor all misleading ads are on the same scale.

That's not an excuse for misleading ads not deception. The ads are clearly such. But if your retort is that they are the same and me seeing degrees of deception is me making an excuse for my chosen company, that's not a very good one.

So right back at you. You choosing to see such ads at a basic level is trying to defend your chosen company.

Lol, give me your misleading ads scale.

Marketers doing their job well I see.

Don't really have a scale, didn't think I put forth an idea that was super controversial.

I doubt people think that all misleading movie trailers and ads operate on a singular level. Not really sure why we should get rid of nuance here, despite agreeing that both are deceptive.
