Xbox One twitch achievements detailed - be the hipster

To some extent, but gaming is more of a competitive activity whereas watching stuff on TV/Netflix/Twitch is not really a competitive activity.

Nobody is going to look at my activity feed and say damn I need to watch more TV to catch up to him. However if you accrued points for watching a TV show or new show on Netflix or a live event on Twitch that could eventually be redeemed for gift cards ala Bing Rewards that would give people are real incentive to care.

I think there are plenty of metrics out there to prove that people very much care about media consumption and stuff that gamers would normally not associate with competition. Four Square and Get Glue are pretty damn popular. They haven't shown whether or not avatar or profile awards awards are part of their vision, but I see that being a smart idea.

I have a TV what exactly do I need an xbox for if I want to watch TV?

watching something is not an achievement. What's Next Breathing Air is an achievement?

Haha, bravo for reading my mind.

FourSquare gives you real rewards and discount coupons for checking in at businesses.

Are people surprised by this. They put most apps behind the paywall.

Twitch just seems strange because it's sponsored by ads. There's just something perverse about it, more-so than Netflix. Also, Twitch is a great way to promote your games, so I don't see why MS wouldn't want everyone to watch streams. I've purchased games after watching Twitch streams on multiple occasions.

- Watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers to be the Hipster

As much as I dislike the idea of media-related, non-gaming related achievements, this is actually pretty ingenious. I honestly don't watch a lot of Twitch stuff outside of Giant Bomb live shows, but the PlayStation Live stuff is pretty awesome from what I've experienced so far. The only problem is that there's like 50 streams going at once and half of them only have like five or 10 viewers. There's such a glut of streams that I'm not sure which would be worth watching. Couple that with the fear that if I ever actually did stream anything I'd probably only end up with like 10 viewers and thus would be discouraged from ever doing it again. But if there's an incentive for people to actually watch steams on Live, that's pretty cool.

I think I achieved all of those except for the "watch a live stream with 100k viewers". Only eSports get that many viewers.

A small part of me expects MS to announce that third party apps will not be behind the Gold paywall at 2014/5 E3.
That would be bad for business at this point. People who bought gold to use those apps now feel like they have been ripped off.

You are right. However, the xbox one does not support streaming out of the box. Maybe when they get streaming working they will make it available to silver members.

They also have achievements for watching TV don't they? They don't even mean anything anymore. You can beat PDZ today (released in 2005) and earn ZERO achiements, but play any game released in 2013 and you'll probably unlock one before you even play.

People love achievements.

Please understand.

Sure but Get Glue is literally nothing but allowing people to keep track of what they watch and getting virtual doo dads. It's the same thing with Steam trading cards that aren't tied to anything aside from play time. I'm sure they could design ways to offer discounts for people, but it would probably be easier to just make third parties provide badges. The encouraging thing we should take from this is that Twitch is obviously providing rich data to MS about time watched, number of viewers, etc. MS can perhaps levy that information in order to really make the experience on console better.

Say you are interested in a game and are perusing the store...you see a link below indicating that someone is streaming it, or that a friend has purchased the game. That's a good thing. The achievements are like the least inportant part of the post IMO.

You need gold to use netflix too. No surprise at all. I'm assuming most/all apps are behind the paywall.
ugh. I had this idea in my head of being able to quickly switch between watching tv and watching a league of legends tournament throughout the day

Edit: and a FGC tournament whenever marvel isn't on

"The Twitch experience on Xbox One will enable Xbox Live Gold members to view the full content catalog from tens of thousands of PC & console broadcasters on the Twitch platform."

This is fucking huge! This has to be the first Twitch app where that is possible.

Shame to hear broadcasting is delayed though, I was going to stream on Day One....

-Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers and become the Talent Scout

Does this mean we will see more channels that are not the top 300 partnered channels?

I don't get the people crying about achievements, you can turn them off and ignore the whole system if it really bothers you that much. They're an optional meta-game reward, stop acting like it's impacting your enjoyment of the app.

The hipster thing is funny, but giving achievements stuff outside of games just devalues them even more... which is saying a bit, since they were pretty worthless to begin with.

Devalues them? What? They're virtual points that do absolutely nothing other than say "Hey, I've spent more time/money using this piece of entertainment than you!"

They were never meant to be anything more than a meta-game meant to extend replay value.

Yelp has achievements?
The mobile app does, at least. They're called Badges, and you get them for things like writing a lot of reviews, checking in several times in various places, and stuff like that. Problem is they expire, which makes sense for things like writing reviews but not for things like checking into businesses in other countries that you likely won't be visiting again.

So the 8 hour one is unobtainable pretty much, only stream I could think if is AGDQ/SGDQ but even then, archive breaks, downtime etc

It's stuff like this that sometimes makes me think achievements were one of the worst ideas to come from gaming. Like, this is offensively stupid enough that I'd want to AVOID ever using Twitch on XB1 as a result, hopefully if Sony expands it on PS4 they don't do the same thing, though even if they did at least they have privacy options so I can just hide the list, hide notifications, and leave it purely in the realm of morbid curiosity.

EDIT: Wait, Crackle has achievements? Does EVERYTHING fucking use achievements on that system? To go into crazy hyperbole territory I may hate this as much as the initially proposed DRM.

I believe saltybet is on 24/7. Just leave it on for free acheevs.

I am very much looking forward to AGDQ in January 5, 2014 though and everyone should watch regardless of achievements.

Yeah, I agree, that's why I said they were pretty worthless, but they did attempt to extend replay value because you'd actually have to do something to get them, most of the time. Now it's literally just watching shit, so they've become even more pointless now.

This post is hilarious

So you're saying something completely optional that has no impact on games or applications outside of providing an incentive for continued use is one of the worst ideas to come from gaming?

all these media achievements are cool for those that want them

I damn well better be able to hide all those I don't want though

I only care for gaming achievements and not too much about that even

But if I go to my Achievements tab or whatever it is I better be able to hide any app achievements I don't want to see

I don't even...

This doesn't affect you negatively in any way.

I did say feel for a reason, though technically it's also one of the only things that seemingly has actually had any hold outside of gaming that can be tied to it.

Just seeing this sort of thing applied to non-game (and non-fitness) stuff bugs the hell out of me for reasons I have a hard time pinning down. Probably because I'm seeing it on passive media like watching or reading something and it just comes off as a stupid gimmick at best, exploitative at worst, at least ostensibly a game's about challenging yourself and making accomplishments even if they're irrelevant ones, and similar to fitness except not-so-irrelevant.

Plus those achievement names are some of the most painful things I've ever seen.
