Are people surprised by this. They put most apps behind the paywall. You need Gold to watch Twitch?
I guess it's to be expected, but seriously, that's just awful.
To some extent, but gaming is more of a competitive activity whereas watching stuff on TV/Netflix/Twitch is not really a competitive activity.
Nobody is going to look at my activity feed and say damn I need to watch more TV to catch up to him. However if you accrued points for watching a TV show or new show on Netflix or a live event on Twitch that could eventually be redeemed for gift cards ala Bing Rewards that would give people are real incentive to care.

Yeah none of those are actually an achievement...
I think there are plenty of metrics out there to prove that people very much care about media consumption and stuff that gamers would normally not associate with competition. Four Square and Get Glue are pretty damn popular. They haven't shown whether or not avatar or profile awards awards are part of their vision, but I see that being a smart idea.

- Watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers to be the Hipster
That would be bad for business at this point. People who bought gold to use those apps now feel like they have been ripped off.A small part of me expects MS to announce that third party apps will not be behind the Gold paywall at 2014/5 E3.
You are right. However, the xbox one does not support streaming out of the box. Maybe when they get streaming working they will make it available to silver members.Twitch just seems strange because it's sponsored by ads. There's just something perverse about it, more-so than Netflix. Also, Twitch is a great way to promote your games, so I don't see why MS wouldn't want everyone to watch streams. I've purchased games after watching Twitch streams on multiple occasions.
Nintendo
This is so goddamn stupid.
They also have achievements for watching TV don't they? They don't even mean anything anymore. You can beat PDZ today (released in 2005) and earn ZERO achiements, but play any game released in 2013 and you'll probably unlock one before you even play.
FourSquare gives you real rewards and discount coupons for checking in at businesses.
ugh. I had this idea in my head of being able to quickly switch between watching tv and watching a league of legends tournament throughout the dayYou need gold to use netflix too. No surprise at all. I'm assuming most/all apps are behind the paywall.
Nope! I just unlocked two by quoting and reading your post!Is there anything that doesn't have achievements in this brave new world?
-Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers and become the Talent Scout
Where was the "...""The Twitch experience on Xbox One will enable Xbox Live Gold members to view the full content catalog from tens of thousands of PC & console broadcasters on the Twitch platform."
This is fucking huge! This has to be the first Twitch app where that is possible.
Shame to hear broadcasting is delayed though, I was going to stream on Day One....
Crackle achievements

Could be worse. Yelp has achievements that expire. "Oh, you didn't go to Baskin Robbins in the last couple of months? Badge re-locked, mothersucker!"Is there anything that doesn't have achievements in this brave new world?

Turned me off from the whole experience.

The hipster thing is funny, but giving achievements stuff outside of games just devalues them even more... which is saying a bit, since they were pretty worthless to begin with.
The mobile app does, at least. They're called Badges, and you get them for things like writing a lot of reviews, checking in several times in various places, and stuff like that. Problem is they expire, which makes sense for things like writing reviews but not for things like checking into businesses in other countries that you likely won't be visiting again.Yelp has achievements?
Wait am I reading this right? I need gold to WATCH a stream? Fuck that
So the 8 hour one is unobtainable pretty much, only stream I could think if is AGDQ/SGDQ but even then, archive breaks, downtime etc
Devalues them? What? They're virtual points that do absolutely nothing other than say "Hey, I've spent more time/money using this piece of entertainment than you!"
They were never meant to be anything more than a meta-game meant to extend replay value.
Is there anything that doesn't have achievements in this brave new world?
The hipster achievement is just... Wow.
No words lol.
It's stuff like this that sometimes makes me think achievements were one of the worst ideas to come from gaming. Like, this is offensively stupid enough that I'd want to AVOID ever using Twitch on XB1 as a result, hopefully if Sony expands it on PS4 they don't do the same thing, though even if they did at least they have privacy options so I can just hide the list, hide notifications, and leave it purely in the realm of morbid curiosity.
EDIT: Wait, Crackle has achievements? Does EVERYTHING fucking use achievements on that system? To go into crazy hyperbole territory I may hate this as much as the initially proposed DRM.

I did say feel for a reason, though technically it's also one of the only things that seemingly has actually had any hold outside of gaming that can be tied to it.This post is hilarious
So you something completely optional that has no impact on games or applications outside of providing an incentive for continued use is one of the worst ideas to come from gaming?
lol, great post.
