Xbox One X - Available November 7 for $499

Early to be talking about PS5.

We have at least a couple of years to go if this generation is anything like the last.

Plus, I'm sure there will be a Super Slim, and Pro Slim before a PS5 happens.
It's already very clear that this generation isn't much like the last. However, I agree that we likely won't see a PS5 for quite some time since we just got the Pro last year. Any new hardware within the next couple years would be throwing Pro buyers under the bus and damage consumer trust in Sony.

I am going to trade in my Xbox One S hopefully they have good deals but man it will still hurt paying that $678 CAD after taxes price.

I haven't gone 4k yet but about a year after release or whenever the next halo drops I'll probably jump in.

I know you gotta pay to play but I'm done with launch prices.

I think it looked very nice. But it wasn't the leap I was expecting. It still looked very much like Forza with prettier environments and some great looking slick/wet roads.

Where have you been this last year when we learned that's what mid generation refresh consoles are with the PS4 Pro?

Dunno. I feel like Pro was shown off with some really good looking games (e.g. Horizon). I didn't really see any of that come through in the Xbox presentation. Forza was the nicest looking game, and it still did nothing for me (and I love a good racing game).

Horizon already looks pretty damn amazing on the base PS4 though....

$499 makes me ponder actually getting one where at $399 I wouldn't even question it. Not sure $499 is a wise decision on their part. I might just stick with my Pro for games and One-S for 4K bluray and streaming. If their games lineup blew me away maybe I'd feel differently. Anthem was the only standout to me.

For all the questioning of the decision I basically come to the conclusion that MS just isn't going to take a huge hit for console sales. I do now know how much it cost them to put this thing together parts wise but I would guess its closer to 499 than . End of the day its understandable why you wouldn't go for 399 just to lose a ton of money .

I figured I'd wait a few hours before posting to see if my feelings changed. I'm still both disappointed and incredulous.

I just don't understand how Microsoft thinks that launching a slightly-more-powerful-than-PS4-Pro console, a full year after it, for $100 more makes any sense.

How could they possibly have thought that they didn't have to hit $399 with this thing? It just boggles the mind. Do they not remember getting slaughtered with OG X1 at $499? Do they not remember Sony getting slaughtered at $499 and $599 with PS3?

Do they just not care? Who in their right mind looks at the 3 platforms at the holidays this fall and buys this, when they can buy an X1S and a Switch for the same price. Or a PS4 with VR for about the same (a $499 Slim+VR bundle seems likely)?

I just don't get it.

Sea of Thieves looks pretty good, but certainly not 'I need to buy a $500 machine for this' good. Crackdown 3 needed to look ridiculous, and didn't. But even still, if I do want those games, why wouldn't I just buy a 1S for $200 and all 5 games I want for X1, and still have money leftover?

The only thing I can think of is that $399 was their goal all along, but they just couldn't get there. It probably didn't help that they preannounced the specs a year in advance. What hardware supplier is going to really negotiate on price with them when they can't even change the specs to hit a better margin because they already announced them?

And lost sales. Why would Sony give up this growing fanbase?
I smh anytime someone thinks PS5 is coming soon.

Basically, this generation has barely begun.

I don't expect a PS5 anytime soon. The most I see is another console refresh, but still within the PS4 family.

But Phil is the saviour! This is all still Mattrick's fault.

Isn't the 1S $250?

PS4 Pro came out 3 years after PS4, so it's absolutely possible that PS5 will be out 3 years after PS4 Pro in 2019.

If anything, MS had probably made it easier for Sony to delay launching next gen.

In another view, if this is the kind of pricing MS thinks will work for more frequent, incremental console releases then I think they're crazy.
Incremental consoles require incremental pricing. If you can't offer much in terms of new gameplay because you have to still support your base console, you can't ask players to pay much for it.

Being an enthusiast doesn't mean you're going to buy the most expensive things in your hobby. After all for most folks their budget keeps them from doing so. Everyone has their own tailored needs as well. Yes you could build a gaming pc but maybe all your friends play on the ps4 xb1? Still though you want more out of your game so the premium models may fit your needs better. Or maybe people want something less involved then buying a gaming rig? After all all x1x consoles are the same and all will do the same thing right out of their boxes. You simply can't assume what people may want.

And yes I get that some may not be sold on the xb1x. It's hard to see the difference over streams or when you're not playing the game yourself. I wasn't sold on 144Hz gaming until I tried it myself and now it's hard to go back. I don't necessarily think they'll be small though. Hell my tv upscaling 1080p content in my eyes looks better. 4k native content is stunning.

My point is that the XB1X sits between the Pro and a PC. Someone has to be enough of an enthusiast that a Pro isn't enough power for them, but not enough of an enthusiast to go all the way to a PC. Like you said most people have to worry about their budget. Even enthusiasts. That works against PCs, but it also works against the X. Once you get over $400 you are getting out of console territory.

You gave a lot of criteria of why someone would get the X, but that proves my point. The X's audience seems to be a very niche. It's not that no one will buy an X. It's that it won't be many.

If you don't care about 4K and you're only going to play the Microsoft exclusives than the 1s is where you should go. Either way, Microsoft got you to play their games.

Isn't the 1S $250?

Sorry, I was referring to the X1X being $100 more than the Pro.

Still though I've had multiple opportunities to buy an X1S for $200. Minecraft bundle is on ebay, new, for $220 right now. It's technically at $250 but buying it at $200 has been doable for quite a while. I was waiting for Scorpio announce to get back in (previously had a Sunset Overdrive bundle and sold it when X1S was announced), to me it's a no-brainer at this point to just get an S and be done with it.

That poster is saying $100 more than the PS4 Pro which is the comparative competition.

I'm talking about:

"why wouldn't I just buy a 1S for $200 and all 5 games I want for X1, and still have money leftover?"

I think the 1S is still $250 afaik

ok I'm just bad at reading comprehension

yeah its strange to me, what market is MS trying to get at with this $500 console? I'm not seeing it, I would love to peek at their data. To me, a console which costs $100 more for more power, isn't nearly as appealing as a console that costs $100 less with less power but much more games.
