Am I the only one who built defenses for the Avenger?

Sub Zero

his body's cold as ice, but he's got a heart of gold
Are there any junk items that I can sell in the Black Market and are not needed for upgrades/building items? I remember EU had some alien computers that you got from UFO missions, which netted you a lot of money. I currently have an Alien weapons cache that sells for $56 but I have no idea if it is needed for anything

First non tutorial mission down. Jesus this is hard.

Only 1 death but I was awfully lucky with a lot of dodges. Could have been a full wipe on the last then. Exploding car won it for me.

This..... This looks like it's gonna be a hard game.

Honestly the first few missions were the hardest so far and seemed to have strict timers.

Fuck me, that first blacksite mission is brutal.
Managed to scramble together my backup squad and build them some decent equipment for my second try. The mission went fine until I got the vial and reinforcements were called in at the same time as a snake pod was discovered. Only lost one more soldier beating them down, but then another reinforcement squad arrived and landed on my god damn evac spot, lol. They took out two of my other soldiers, but luckily my final panicking specialist took out that mech in a berserk attack. I got the hell out of there asap after that before something else would fuck me up.

Four out of five soldiers killed, down now to only one veteran and not enough rookies to fill a roster. Will have to spend all my supplies on fresh blood.

In short, the game is awesome.

Saw this on Twitter. This really sums up my experience so far

I love this game

That, then strangle holds him, then another spits poison on him, then you get another guy to shoot him free and he misses too.

First Blacksite mission down after 3 mind bending, toe curling hours and some of the flukiest escapes I've ever seen. I think I need a very stiff drink after that one.

12 hours straight, 12 fucking hours... I don't remember the last time I did this. Could barely wake up today for work. Oh well... worth it.

Yea, that last bit was brutal. I couldn't believe they were still sending more reinforcements after all the shit I had been through. The last stand with everyone taking cover in those woods was awesome.

I can understand that EGM review that hated all the timed missions. I guess a lot of SRPGs games have a similar turn limit, but the ones here seem to push you to be always advancing... which is completely different from the constant overwatch style of play that I used to crawl through Xcom 1.

Are those story missions the same layout for everyone?

Last mission was super glitchy. Animations not playing all over the place, yuck.

Also, rangers op lol. Timer forced me to rush into a pod that I didn't expect to find, muton and 2 advent people. The Muton charged my ranger, she gets free sword attack on it with the stun sword, so it stuns the muton. Next turn I shoot someone else instead of finishing the muton, muton tries to attack again and activates the free sword move again, boom dead muton with no actions spent on it and no damage dealt to ranger. Ridiculous.

Did you all start above Veteran or something? My experience as far as the difficulty goes has been a much different one. I haven't even gotten close to losing a soldier. Maybe I should have started on commander.

I'm 4-5 months in. My mission are usually "difficult" or "very difficult" at this point.

I'm not doing a bullshit stealth brag, I'm legitimately wondering if I'm just a wimp for going Veteran my first time through.

All maps and missions, to the best of my knowledge use the procedural plot and parcel system. There may be story missions that don't late on, but nothing I've seen in the game is repeatable so far.

My experience so far has been starting on Commander, losing in June, restarting on Veteran Iroman, getting bored, restarting on Commander Ironman. I'm now into the middle of April without losing anyone. So yeah, if you're finding Veteran a cakewalk, Commander isn't as big a step-up as Normal to Classic was in EU/EW.

Ha, now that you talk about it, forgot about that. Maybe not, the way he described it was very similar though, but maybe my "woods" part won't make sense to him.

Yeah I mean: I started in Africa and my mission was kind of a desert
I had woods, but I imagine that the level is generated in an appropriate template, just with some added conditions as a story mission. The map layout was different from my first attempt where my squad got wiped, and this is the same save.

You both had two sets of reinforcement, the second one including a mech?

I play at Veteran and the game is brutal after a few weeks in game

Yep, I was in the USA. Completely forgot about the random side of this XCOM.

Yes, although the second one was thanks to me taking too goddamn long bringing the sniper to the evac. The first reinforcement was one advent trooper, one advent officer and one advent stun lancer.

Yea unfortunately that doesn't end just the characters turn, but the whole teams turn XD

well, make your other moves, until he's the only one left, then end the round...?

there kinda isn't a reason to end just one char's turn and lock you out of it

I had 2 reinforcements, no mech but ADVENTs

Oh that goes without saying I figured that out the hard way mid mission. My guy took a hit because of it.

Horrible mission spoilers for early to mid game:
Anyone else have to do the UFO mission? SO HORRIBLE. I just spent 3 hours fighting for progress in the mud. Blergh.

That's really good to know. I did a classic/Ironman playthrough in EU after my initial run but I always felt it was a little too intense for my personal tastes. It was a crazy challenge, but I hate micromanaging to that level.

Oh sweet. I only need to 'build' a weapon once before everyone can get it!

Also weapon upgrades are tied to troopers, not weapons! Kind of weird but okay whatever!

also it's real fucked up that MECs are evil

:(

hope i get to rip arms off some of my soldiers and shove them into an iron lung with a particle cannon attached soon. just like the old days

Hazaro

Did a 12 turn VIP extract on commander and no one died. Felt great. Scouting Ranger is so helpful.

The black site would have been fine if my sniper didn't die from 6 ticks of a single poison. That is completely bullshit. I save scummed the hell out of that encounter.

In fairness I still don't have armor (3/6 corpses) and only learned that radio towers boost income and lower your expanding costs enormously. I don't know how to get tier 2 armor either unless all of it is build solo.

A lot of difficulty is def. With tech tree and priorities. I just got plasma nades so life should be gravy for a bit now.
Think I'll ride this out to the end as much as I can

It runs like shit on my PC :( first game I've ever uninstalled due to not being able to run it, what a sorry state of affairs.

You can't even run the game?

Or you can't run the game on higher settings?

What are your specs? I find it hard to believe you can't run the game on low settings, yet this is the first game ever you can't run.

Not sure if it's been discussed but unless it's a bug, there seems to be a system for severity of wounds that isn't directly related to how much damage a unit takes, but maybe to the type of attack they sustain.

For example, in one mission one of my units got pulled in and constricted for 2 turns, lost 4 health with just 2 health remaining and he has to recover for just 9 days after getting nearly killed.

In that same mission a higher ranking unit got hit by a stun lancer that did 4 damage but he had nanofiber armor and 9 total health, so he lost 3 health. Recovery time is 22 days.

Just give me a simple mission game! One that I can send my red shirts on while it takes me 2 weeks to get my Guerilla Tactics School dug out and built.
