Oh come on.

I got a PS3 this January after having been a longtime 360 owner and I have to say this is just another experience that makes the whole thing feel like amateur hour compared with my 360/ LIVE experience. Meh =/

Are companies only allowed to use select fonts?

Between the old PS3 font, the new PS3 font, the "Playstation Network" font, and the old PLaystation font for "Only on Playstation", Sony's already used up their allotment for "Playstation".

oh come on, it's not like LIVE has never gone down. didn't it go down for like 3 weeks in Dec. 2007/Jan. 2008?

All network gaming services have outages.

You should have been in on the ground floor, when games whose voice and matchmaking were COMPLETELY broken were more common than those that weren't. Even long after the system had been out, I remember playing the PS3 Bad Company 1 where my group used party chat on our 360s, because the PS3's voice was totally broken in that game.

This would be yet another reason I never got into the habit of buying multiplats on my PS3.

Yeah I know.

I just mean this in addition to the overall comparison of the UIs and online integration underlines the notion that Sony feels a whole generation behind MS as far as usability goes.

Um. what? It was intermittent if I remember, but all services weren't completely down for 3 weeks.

it's free, dude.

Lot of players could not play certain games for days to almost a whole week. It was very random of course with some titles being affected, and some services working fine, but it was pretty bad especially during the holiday period when everyone was getting their new games and hardware.

So PSN goes down right after Sony releases a big multiplayer title for the PS3? Ouch that has to be a big kick on the balls, i feel sorry for all the Socoms fans out there who can't play MP.

Sucks for SOCOM players, but MK and Portal 2 just came out this week too. This is a pretty bad week for this to happen.

not to mention AAA 3rd party games like portal 2 and mk.

i bought those on 360 but i was really looking forward to playing socom today. oh well.

I was expecting to play a lot of mortal kombat on my holiday tomorrow.

This sort of outage is pretty bad. I wonder how many heads will roll over this.

the "free" excuse? i almost thought that had gone away.

Nope. It will always be valid.

And, why not? It's actually one of the features of the service.

All live services were down for 2-3 weeks DURING winter holidays. At least we all got a free copy of Undertow!

I had to manually log in last night, but PSN seemed fine to me. I didn't play any game online though.

That was my experience too. I remember some Halo 3 matchmaking problems here & there, but overall, XBL stayed up for me the whole time.

For those who have Portal 2, you guys could finish up the game and get all the offline trophies (you should be able to get 51%).

"Free" network infrastructure crumbles under the weight of 3 of the biggest releases in some time, one of which ties to an outside service allowing cross-platform play? Shocked. But yeah, I'm sure the SOCOM freaks are, well...freaking out.

Way to speak out of your asshole.

You have absolutely no idea as to what you're talking about. Sounds like a backhanded dig at PSN.

I could not get on to XBL for a month. I tried several times a day at different times and it did not work for an entire month.

Now is it possible that I could of played at 3 AM while I was asleep? sure, but even the most fucked up MMO launches did not have network failure for a month.

When key features of your device are contingent on your network being fully operational 24/7, you can no longer argue that because I don't explicitly pay for the network, I don't have an expectation of it always working. If Sony wants any leniency on this shit, they can't sell games that don't work if you aren't connected to their network, etc...

Not to mention that many people do pay for PSN+.

Exactly the reason why I didn't purchase the game. Such bullshit

I wouldn't have, either, had I noticed. Or I should say, I would've bought it on XBLA instead. Now I'm watching carefully and will avoid PSN by default.

The XMB is much better than Microsoft's interface, IMO.

Steam has become self-aware, is using Portal 2 as a, um, portal into PSN. Soon Gabe's "one-console" future will be much closer to becoming a reality when Steam envelopes the PlayStation Network.

All the "PLUS" symbols by people's names will become Gabe Newell avatars...

Fixed. I understand people's frustrations, really I do. There's nothing more I'd like to be doing than playing Mortal Kombat online. But the people trying to draw comparisons to other services as reasons why one is better than other is ridiculous.

It went down. They're trying to fix it. Hopefully it'll be solved soon.

I must admit, the limited informaiton coming out of SCE is the bigger kicker than the actual issue. It would be nice to get a bit of transparency. Does anyone really care if they say, "Look, we [insert issues here] and we're currently fixing it."

The vague "investigating" comments don't help the situation.

So the people with PS+ can still sign on?

Nope, but that's not what PS+ is for. It's for offers and free games and stuff, not paying to play online etc.
Playing online is still free, doesn't matter if your a PS+ subscriber or not. So using paying for PS+ as a argument at this moment just isn't justified when it comes to being able to play online or not.

Well, to each their own, of course. I just find it horribly counter-intuitive and unnecessarily complicated-- small tasks take twice as long or more than with the 360 dashboard interface. But anyway, this is going off topic, so I'll step out now.

I was trying to play Bionic Commando Re-armed 2, but you can't play it offline - something I found out AFTER I bought it (though not today), and will be watching out for from now on. Screw you, Capcom.

This and the DRM on Final Fight are ridiculous.

As much as I detest exclusive pre-order bonuses, overpriced DLC content, paying for content that's already on disc, and the like, I consider this the most unethical practice in video games.

It's not like you're expecting COD online multiplayer to be playable without the internet, you've already bought a game that requires no internet connection, and you can't play it because their (Sony's) online infrastructure is failing.

What if you move somewhere without internet service, can't afford to maintain it or get convicted of sex crimes and are no longer legally allowed to have internet access? This sort of practice should never be allowed.

I think someone needs to start a class-action lawsuit to get this stopped!

Yeah that was the last time, some people act like this happens all the time or something, I can't believe people can't just do some other shit while PSN is down.

If you're convicted for a sex offense, something tells me you've got bigger problems than internet access :S

Didn't you know? The only time to play your PS3 is when PSN is down!
