• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

You can only play one series whose IP was started this gen, what would it be?

Uncharted would probably be the last of my picks.
I don't even dislike the game (mostly thank to its fine execution), but in terms of mechanics it summarizes pretty much everything i dislike about "triple A" console games: setpieces, scripts, linear progression, "cinematic experiences", quicktime events, and so on.

Someone named STALKER and Dark Souls. Those are two nice picks I would easily agree with.
Mine, anyway, would be Mount & Blade.

I'm going to say Call of Duty. Technically pre-dates this generation however CoD 2 first appeared as a launch title for XB360 and was not on consoles prior so I'm sticking with that answer!

How could I forget Left 4 Dead! That puts me in two minds about my Borderlands choice. I spent countless hours playing L4D1 though I never really got into L4D2 like I did the first game.

Portal and Left 4 Dead with the tie.

It actually took me awhile to think of them, because I don't associate them with console generations. All the console-only series I can think of are too iterative and will be easily replaced by something new next generation.

ChromeHounds, don't care if its dead or the SP was trash, I would have NEVER wanted to miss out on that online mode. Nothing has topped it for me yet.

Would have said Mass Effect if Hudson/Waiters didn't spray diareah in fans mouths with the nonsense in 3.

So Assassin's creed, especially since I like the multiplayer.

Mount and Blade might be 2nd.

It's too bad that the current generation of Fallout games don't count, even thought they're complete reboots of the source material. I would choose them in a heartbeat.

I would probably go game-free in this scenario then.

Easily the Souls series. An amazing and actually somewhat realistic melee comabt system and a beautiful immersive world that presented its story in a very interesting and rewarding way. I spent countless of hours with Dark Souls and I still come back to it once every while.

These "you can only play X" threads are starting to get weird. What's next? "You can only play one game that's title begins with A? Which one would it be?"

Anyway, on topic, I'd have to go with the Souls games.

Call of Duty: Finest Hour was on GameCube, PS2, and xbox before cod2 came to the 360.

There where a lot of great games this gen, but I feel most of my favorite IPs and franchises have been around longer. I feel limiting it to this gen makes it much harder to pick out a game series that would be worthy of such a life long commitment.

For me It's a really hard toss up, between Mass Effect and The Witcher. Other than those I don't feel like anything else is interesting enough moving forward. My interest some of the heavy hitters from the beginning of this gen have really dried up.

Bravely Default
Dark Souls
Lost Odyssey (i consider it the only true sequel to FF7-8-9-10)
Demons Souls
Witcher
Mass Effect

In that order

Hard Corps: Uprising

I want more.

Man I wish Konami would even acknowledge the game.

They said they removed "Contra" from the title to turn it into its own franchise. Then it came out and welp.

I'd love more as well. Still my favorite download game and one of my favorite releases of the year it came out.

Uncharted would probably be the last of my picks.

Yeah. I think alot of people saying it don't understand the topic. (can ONLY play this game and any possible sequels your death)

I can't imagine stretching the Uncharted games out across a couple months, let alone a life time.

Bayonetta I think I could spend at least a year on and still see progress in my game, which is why I made that my choice.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls I considered as well with all the possible builds you could spec towards, but I'm not much interested in stat mechanics so I don't think that's for me personally.

Single IP - Xenoblade

A hugely satisfying JRPG set in a big game world that tells a story as grand as the environments themselves. It's coupled with beautiful music and wonderous art direction with attention to detail that will immerse the player in a convincing journey around the world. On top of it all, the engaging, real-time combat system and frequent encounter of dangerously high-leveled monsters will keep you on your toes as you explore all Xenoblade has to offer at your leisure.

I'm not going to go any deeper than that. My point is that JRPG fans would be doing themselves a great disserve for not to getting their hands on this game. Xenoblade turned out to be an unexpected top notch game that has made me a Monolith Soft fan. It's a fine example of good game design trumping technology ; more hardware power is always appriciated, but developers can still do amazing things on outdated platforms. If the scope of Xenoblade doesn't blow you away, then maybe the sense of player freedom will.

Series - Red Steel 2

Vibrantly beautiful cell-shaded graphics, tight shooting mechanics, motion control swordplay that's both intuitive and visceral with the ability to switch between sword and gun on the fly, a cool atmospheric spaghetti twangy soundtrack and appropriately cheesy voice acting to finish things off. The game's by no means flawless, but it nails the most important aspects of motion control gaming and it's an experience only available on the Wii. Other third parties could learn a thing or to on motion control from Ubisoft Paris who has redeemed itself with this sequel.

Red Steel 2 is the kind of motion control-based game I imagined the Wii to have from the beginning. It takes advantage of the stylish graphics best -suited for Wii's hardware along with a smart combat system reliant on a mix of of face buttons and motion control to deliver a responsive and fluid experience. You'll also appriciate how cool the finisher moves make you feel. Just try performing "The Shot" with the handgun and not feel like a badass.
