Your 2017 Gaming-Related New Years Resolutions

- Clear backlog (it's not that big).
- Buy less on Day 1 purely because prices seem to be dropping like a rock within 2 weeks.
- Finish game before moving on to the next.

Finally play Torment for more than 30 minutes after wasting 2 hours installing it for the 6th or so time.

I already know I won't.

1. Get my two game projects done. Since they are aiming Wii U as one platform (as the lead platform actually, so I'm actually putting some work into getting the platformer to run at 60fps in Unity on the old platform, I'd like to at least someone besides me being able to appreciate this in case it works out), they should really release 2017.
2. Evaluate how much I use my Xbox One and how much in particular for AAA games. I feel like the only AAA games I really enjoy these times are Nintendo's and the odd one from Sega or Ubi. I got Batman Arkham Knight for my christmas and so far think it's the worst game in the series, together with not enjoying Assassin's Creed as much as I used to, I feel buying AAA games not by Nintendo or Sega might be a waste of money and more importantly time for me.

It's probably going to sound weird but I've always had a problem with not being sure what game to play next, so I end up not playing anything. I want to try and be more decisive about what I play next if I can.

Just one: actually play the games that I buy.

I've bought so many games this year and I always end up playing the same four games. Hell, I even have some that I bought last year that I haven't touched. Maybe I'll make up some sort of rule, "If you want to buy a game, first play one of the ones that you already own" or something.

Stop playing games so late, I don't need to be up until 2am playing Destiny when I have work tomorrow. It'll be there when I get back.

Just to continue playing a lot of universally acclaimed games from years past that I missed instead of only playing current year games like I used to do. There's often a drought in the middle of the year so it's not hard to play a classic instead of some mid quality psn game.

Focusing on clearing my backlog makes gaming feel like a job. If the game is something I want to play I'll get around to it naturally. If it's not, oh well, most of these I bought for ~10 or less.

Not buy any more games except:

Selected Humble Bundles if offer is good.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Nioh
Nier:Automata
Hellblade
The Last Guardian

Write a review of every game I play.

Clear my backlog accumulated over the past two years. 2016 was year of 3DS/Vita RPG backlog clearing. 2017 will be the year of the PS4/XboxOne backlog cleanup.

Find and refurbish an old NeoGeo arcade cab that used to dot pizza places around the US. I have told myself since 2008 I was going to do this and I want it done for 2018 so that will be a big goal.

Have no backlog by the end of the year. I can currently count on one hand the number of games in my backlog (although one of them is Dragons Dogma which I'm sure isnt short) so that's doable. Looking at next year there's a ridiculous amount of games coming in the first half of the year so that will probably add to it, but the only scheduled game for the second half that I want is Red Dead (and that's a prime candidate for a delay into 2018 anyway), so I think it will be doable

I'm sure there will be other games announced for next fall though, so we will see. Currently it looks very achievable

be more careful on preordering because game prices are dropping really fast.
Here is a tip: don't ever pre order. Ever

this past year I only bought games I knew I was going to play as I only bought them when I was going to start playing them. As a result I finished more games than usual this year and spent way less money. But I was also willing to hard quit a game when I didn't like it or stopped having fun. Nothing wrong with wanting to play something else. Gonna do that again this year.

I also want to continue taking my time playing each game. I try to take breaks from the Internet. That way I don't get influenced by online communities and have my own opinions. It also helps me to avoid that feeling of "oh shit I'm so far behind." No need to worry. Gaming should just be good vibes and good times. No need to worry about others. 2016 was a good gaming year for me because of that. Less stress and cynicism and more love and respect. Looking forward to enjoying gaming even more in 2017!

-Release several games (I have two coming out in the first three months of the year).

-Play more horror games.

- Buy more games
- Complete 3x as many games
- Focus on 2017 releases
- Post and read GAF more

... basically the opposite of most everyone else. The trick is to manage a positive work, health, family life balance along with trying to game like I'm young and overloaded with free time. One day I'll figure it out, but in 2016 I gamed too little. :D

I'm getting pretty limited on free time as the years go on, so I've made some resolutions to limit the number of games I play next year:
  • Don't play any more remasters
  • Don't play games that take longer than 50 hours to beat
  • Don't own more than 3 unplayed games at any point

For me, it's finishing games I start.

I have a bad habit of starting games, really loving them, then I miss a day or two and then never return to them. I have so many incredible games with saves a third of the way or even halfway, so I plan on going back and finishing those next year.

For games that don't grab me, that will be less so, though.

Since I'm all digital now think I'll stop preordering so much stuff. Also cut down on buying in general.

-Play games to completion

-Play fewer games

-Buy fewer games

I already started this the second half of 2016, with the majority of my game playing coming from GameFly.

-Focus in more on the games/genres I actually love. Too much branching out, trying to be part of the zeitgeist and play as many of the hyped games as possible is recent years has led to wasting too much time on games I wasn't liking much, or though were just ok, instead of playing games I was truly enjoying.

-Related to the last one, abandon games and move on to another one quicker if I'm not loving a game.

Gonna steal these two. Gonna stick to RPG, Strategy (and FPS) games

spend less time on this side of the forum and more in the community side

This one has a nice side effect: Less hype for every game under the sun, instead I want to stick to fewer games for a longer amount of time.

Sticking to what I said last year first and foremost: Don't fret about the backlog... just play what I want, when I want.

Besides that, I do want to try out some genres I've historically not really been drawn to, such as RTS and MMO. After thoroughly enjoying FF15, I'm going to start playing FF14. I have also never really been into any Blizzard games, so maybe D3, SC2, and OW this coming year. :)

I bought a *lot* of games over the past couple months (so many insanely good sales), so I have more than enough to keep me busy for a long while.

-Buying comparatively less games than during 2015 and 2016.

-Waiting for buying a game until I complete its predecessor. For example, I am tempted to grab AC: Syndicate, but I haven´t yet finished AC: Unity. The exception to this "rule" would be an extremely convenient offer.

-Partially returning to physical games, specially for comparatively short, high-resale value titles (for example, Titanfall 2).

-Only preordering games belonging to long-proven series that I love (Halo, Forza, Battlefield, Mass Effect).

Stop getting digital games and go back to physical releases. I have a Best Buy Gamer's Club membership I might as well start using it.

I think mine is to just wait a few weeks before buying any big AAA games (excluding a few like Zelda, Mario and RDR2); practically ever game I've bought at ÂŁ40+ has gone down to ÂŁ30 or less before Christmas even began.

Seeing as how I failed miserably at my 2016 Resolutions (well I DID complete the one that took no effort), it might be wise if I didn't set any lofty goals for myself in 2017.

Ah fuck it:
--Compete at EVO. Finally went this year and it was a cool experience. I'm getting semi-decent at SF5, and while I have no shot at winning, if I keep improving at the rate I am I won't make a complete fool of myself.
--Finish my Xbox 360 backlog. It's time for me to finally get rid of this system. Shit, it's been time a couple years ago, but I have a couple (more like around 15) games I HAVE to finish before I move completely.
--Become proficient competent with keyboard+mouse. I currently use controller on pc for everything I can and I do well enough, but for some games that don't have controller support, I'm left floundering like a dying fish since I'm being taken out of my element.
--Play through Chrono Trigger again. My favorite game of all-time, but I haven't completed it since I was a pre-teen. I've started various playthroughs on PS2/PS3, PS Vita, and a couple emulators, but I always get distracted and never finish.

I was just thinking about this when I saw the thread :D

The past two years I have focused on clearing out backlog games while not adding new ones. This has been good for the numbers but it made me prioritize short games too much. I'm gonna have a completely different approach to it this year.

I promise that I will:

- Clear out the retro(/semi-retro?) console backlog
With that I mean GB, GBA, NES, SNES, GC, PS1 and PS2.
It's been bugging me for quite some time that I don't take the time to play the oldest games in my backlog. Mainly because it's gonna be a pain to replace them if something breaks. It's been like a buzz in my mind for a while but I've been having troubles with the setups and whatevs. I just finished setting up everything perfectly and even got a new couch so NOW this WILL happen!

- Focus more on hours played than games played
I want to play DA:I at least eight times. I want to play The Witcher 2 at least four times. I'm not even gonna try to figure out how many playthroughs I want to do in the Bethesda games. I can keep going with a huge amount of games.
I didn't let this happen the past two years because I felt bad about "wasting" that time. I played a couple of them once but didn't let myself finish them the way I wanted... with the result that those playthroughs will have to be replayed. What I apparently didn't realise is that these mega huge games will still be there and will take just as many hours if I play them another year. I need to let them take time, let myself have fun. That is not wasting time. Stupid brain!

- Replace the aimless browsing on the phone with PSP and NDS
I keep checking different forums, reading news and stalking people I hate instead of playing the numerically small but playtime-wise astronomically big backlog I have on handheld devices. That is stupid and I have to stop doing that yesterday.

- Play more co-op
My SO and I went from playing together frequently to not finishing a single game together for... years now. Bad, very bad. Gonna change that in 2017.

- Not buy the Switch
This one will be hard. It looks like a dream console for me. But did I play on that first PS4 I just replaced with a Pro? Nah. Did I love the original 3DS? Nooope (2DS ftw). Did I play anything on that first Vita that I replaced with a fancy japanese special edition? Nuh-uh. Have I even started the Xbox One? Eh... no.
Do I ultimately regret being there pretty much day one for every single console the past two generations? Yeah, in hindsight! So I'm not gonna get that stupidly amazing console. I'm gonna wait for a good looking edition or a pro/slim/new version or somerhing like that.

Stop buying games and not playing them.
Beat games.
Appreciate games that I like and don't try and force myself to like games that don't click with me.

We had a similar thread last week.

May as well post the same resolution again :p

I want to beat every new release that I'm interested in and not add a single game to the backlog.

Tentative list so far:
18/01 Gravity Rush 2 (PS4)
20/01 Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS)
24/01 Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (PS4)
27/01 Digimon World: Next Order (PS4)
09/02 Nioh (PS4)
10/03 NieR Automata (PS4)
31/03 Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (PS4)
04/04 Persona 5 (PS4)
11/04 Yooka-Laylee (PS4)
21/04 The Silver Case (PS4)
28/04 Dragon Quest Heroes II (PS4)
Q2 Valkyria Revolution (PS4)
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PS4)
Super Mario Switch (NS)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS)
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (PS4)
Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy (PS4)
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4)
Tokyo Xanadu (Vita/maybe PS4)
Ys Origin (PS4)

Buy fewer games, spend less time on GAF. Play time was limited to around half an hour per week last year and will probably be the same this year.

I have 8 games in my backlog I'd like to clear before Horizon Zero Dawn and whatever i get for the Switch.

I'd like to finish those instead of playing Overwatch and Titanfall 2 all the time.

Stop visiting Neogaf and concentrate on important things I need to do.

Seriously, I don't even play games that much but I keep coming back here to check the news and waste time.

1) Going to try and clear out a lot of my games in my backlog (I have over 50+ games in my backlog)

2) Going to try and get to 150 plats by the end of next year.

3) Stop buying new games

I think I'm largely done with games. In 2017, I hope I buy nothing else but Mario and Zelda. If I cave to anything else it will be a mistake where I'll play for an hour and move on.

Dont buy games day one.

Play Resident Evil (PS4) for the first time. (Never played a RE game except for 4).

Replay Last Of Us on PS4 Pro.

Finish Zelda OoT 3DS before purchasing Zelda + Switch.
