Your favorite/most used computer Programs?

What's some of your favorite software? I'm painfully outdated when it comes to software, and I'm willing to bet that I'm missing out on a ton of solid programs that I don't know about. So what are some your favorites? It can be Windows, Mac or Linux, it doesn't really matter.

As for some of my favorites:

XBMC - Hands down the customizable and scalable HTPC software out there. I pretty much use it daily.

EventGhost/AutoHotKey - I initially used them as a means of customizing my remote control for my XBMC/HTPC, but I quickly realized that they could be used to make my desktop experience that much more quick and cohesive.

Belvedere - My computer would be a cluttered mess if I didn't have this program. Basically, you can create a set of if/when rules for your computer to abide by. For example, if a file is a .doc file type, copy it to 'Folder Y.' I recommend if for those who suck at keeping their desktops and download folders clean without automated assistance.
 
Google Chrome - helps me look at porn and read gaf.


honorable mention: Spotify - The best part about spotify isn't listening to music, its showing all my friends on facebook that I did.
 
Bulk Rename Utility is one I use from time to time. It helps when I need to rename stuff fast and simple, without having to manually go through each file one-by-one. And the options it gives (adding prefixes/suffixes, padding names, regex replacements, etc.) are great, though I only really use a few at a time.

Probably my most used program is a simple text editor called EditPad. Which isn't so simple anymore, and the author now charges $50 for it. But it started off as a very simple notepad replacement, I still use version 3.4 from 1999

I have all of those auto-start when I boot Windows, and it's pretty much all I use.
 
Best tool I can recommend is an installer called ninite. It will download and install most of the apps mentioned in this thread.

Core Temp

I need a new case with better air flow. At the moment though, I have to constantly monitor temperatures to make sure my PC doesn't explode.

Those combined account for probably 95% of my PC related activities.
 
Most of my favorite programs have been mentioned, so ill mention a small one.

dBpoweramp is a really really nice dead simple audio converter, supports FLAC and everything under the sun.
 
Total Commander, since 1995 basically (NC back in the day).

The best file manager ever created. I die a little inside every time I see people using those horrendous default OS managers.

Opera - great browser and great mail client
Paint.Net - more features than the regular paint, but still simple to use
WinRar - universal archive extractor (I even paid the license !)

for more professional use :
Visual Studio
Notepad++ - perfect for fast editing text files, especially source code.
VirtualDub - fast video editing and good back & forth browsing
cmd (command prompt) - still the best way to do things quickly (remove files, launch scripts/services,...)
 
foobar - best music player by far
Launchy - for easily launching absolutely every single program on my computer
Volume2 - because I want to have 10 different shortcuts for changing the volume on my computer
TheRenamer - to organise files from any DVDs or Blu-Ray I rip before putting it on my HTPC

Also ConvertXtoDVD, haven't used it in a while since I got an HDTV and left DVDs behind, but it was absolutely amazing (and still is from what I can see).

Sublime Text 2 - the best texteditor in the world.
iTerm - app that improves upon the OS X terminal.
Transmit - my favourite ftp program
Plex - mediacenter software
Alfred - my new favourite application launcher, used to love QuickSilver but it was getting progressively worse and updates have pretty much stalled
Steam - Love fullscreen mode
 
-Firefox, the only time it's memory use is less then a gig is when I shut down my PC.

-Eclipse, needed for writing java-code.

    Really fast browser, turbo feature is really useful.
  • Foobar2000
    A really customizable music player.
  • Directory Opus
    File manager, the best one but not cheap.
  • PotPlayer
    Video player with a nice interface and codec support.
  • Tixati
    Torrent downloader, has a great bandwidth manager.
  • Skype
    Audio/Video chat is the main appeal of this but I use it mainly for text.
  • Notepad++
    Text editor, mostly used for its nice search and replace functions.
  • Dropbox
    Helpful for syncing on many computers.
 
Well I no doubt use Firefox the most. Other than that:

rxvt-unicode (terminal emulator)
irssi (IRC client)
midnight commander (File manager)
mplayer (for video)
audacious (for music)
file-roller (archive manager, although I'll mostly just use midnight commander for that)

are my most used applications.
 
On Windows without a doubt DirectoryOpus and Zoom Player. I've been using those for many years.

Have had my first Mac for only a couple of months so far, sadly nothing to match the above two. Really liking Alfred, and I've discovered Sublime Text, which is a great editor (also available for Windows/Linux).
