Personally?

I don't generally bother much with multiplayer, but this has held my attention longer than anything else I've tried. I've enjoyed what I've played of Uncharted 2's multiplayer, though.

I prefer local multiplayer experiences to online, so for me it's Super Mario Bros Wii and Smash Bros. I love Reach, but I'm the keep on playing that game solo online, which is an exercise in frustration.

Demon Soul's and BFBC2 with PS3 GAF. I can't believe I actually put hundreds of hours into that game. I haven't done that in years.

World of Warcraft.

As for shooters.. TF2, L4D and Battlefield BC2

Special mention goes to Lara Croft and Guardian of Light for local co-op.

On consoles : Halo Reach. First Halo's multiplayer I truly enjoy, and coop/firefight are awesome too. There's so much content in there that it makes it the best offer of the genre on consoles. FIFA 11 is a close second though.
On PC : Left 4 dead series. It redifined coop, period. BFBC2 is the runner-up, it's much better than COD's multiplayer.

Classic competitive multiplayer: Starcraft 2
Cooperative multiplayer: Lara Croft and Guardian of Light
(though Magicka and NSMBW also deserve a mention. And so does Comet Crash. It's a great gen for co-op)
Innovative integration in a traditional single-player game: Demon's Souls

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Battlefield: Bad Company 2

I also found
BioShock 2's MP
interesting. By no means the best, but I thought it was worth a mention.

MW2 Spec Ops - Yeh, it's just good.
PGR3 - This and PDZ is pretty much all we played back in 2005, so it was brilliant fun having a dozen people playing our makeshift games. That and PGR3 was a ridiculously good racing game.
Gears of War - Again, because everyone was playing it we would easily play with full lobbies for hours. Tremendous fun.

I'd love to mention some local co-op Nintendo games but I don't have any friends sooooo nvm.

Innovative and immensely enjoyable.

by FAR

having played fps online since Quake (Quakeworld) I have grown tired of the genre and can´t stand online shooters anymore.. Demons Souls is the first real innovative online game in years

Overall, it's probably LittleBigPlanet. It was the first game I got with my PS3, and I played it online almost nightly for several months. It's not terribly deep or anything, but it has a very fun sandbox appeal and it's a blast when played with the right people. I made some PSN friends from around the world who I bonded with through the game, even though we spoke different languages. So it was definitely my most positive MP experience this gen.

Narrowing it down to competitive games, I would choose Gears of War. It's still probably my most played game this gen, I would play splitscreen player matches all day with a bro. I think I stuck with it so long because it became so familiar to me, I knew the ins and outs of every map and it had some pretty exciting moments in competitive matches. It had a shit ton of problems and I couldn't go back to it today, but only Killzone 2 has come close to Gears when it comes to time played.

Competitive:

  • Gears of War 1 - My most played game this gen by far...best MP this gen IMO.
  • Call of Duty 4 - Played a lot of FFA and later on got hooked in TMD, so much fun.

Co-op:

  • Halo 3/Reach/ODST - Best co-op experiences this gen IMO, lost count on how many times I've played the campaigns co-op - some really amazing moments on this one, Firefight in Reach and ODST were also freakin' awesome modes.
  • Resident Evil 5 - Spent almost 80hrs on this one and loved every minute of it.
  • Borderlands - Maybe the most addicting game I've played this gen, couldn't put the controller down...had a great time with this.
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction - Decent SP but the co-op campaign and modes were very good, really enjoyed it.

I have moved farther and farther from wanting to play competitive multiplayer. Co-op on the other hand has been my favorite part of this gen.

  • Uncharted 2 (the best multiplayer on the PS3 HANDS DOWN!)
  • Gears 1+2 (playing through these on second hardest difficulty was a blast! Same with Horde Mode)

I've still never logged in as many hours of team deathmatch as I have with Rainbow Six: Vegas. That includes Vegas 2 and CoD4.

2nd is Gears of War multiplayer, but never really did much with GoW2.

3rd? Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

I fricking hate bullet sponges which in turn makes me hate this game. This coupled with the fact that they never balanced anything correctly makes this one of my least favorite online experiences this generation.

I agree. As far as MP is concerned, Gears is only good in coop/horde.

Competitive MP is probably COD4, however I HATE that everyone is trying to replicate its success. I also enjoyed me some RFOM. If they make Resistance 3 anything like the first game, my feelings about my favorite may change...

Favorite co-op= LBP2
Favorite advancement in online gaming: Demons Souls

Edit: shame on me for forgetting about Warhawk... where art thou starhawk :(?

MAG, Demon's Souls co-op, LBP 2, Borderland (I was pleasantly surprised by this game, I never thought I'd enjoy online but I LOVED it!). There was a time when I was really into Uncharted 2 online. It was fun back in the day, now? Not so much.

If there can be only one, best of the bunch, for me it'd be this:

Left 4 Dead

No other game could turn our group of casual players into such a well honed machine of zombie killing survivalist commandos like this one did. Our bond was almost psychic, with each of us helping to develop our group survival instincts for every situation, whether one of us was blinded and set upon by the horde, to timing the perfect pipe bomb throw, to shifting into formations and firing in teams so that there was always one group of two firing while the other two reloaded. If I had to pick just one game this gen that epitomizes modern multiplayer for me, it'd be Left 4 Dead.

Runner ups:

Gears of War 2 : Horde Mode

The best defend against waves of enemies mode of them all. The ground shakes from the footfalls of giant locust and explosive ordinance, heads crack, shields get battered and topple, and eventually all is lost, and everybody dies in a tatter of pulpy flesh. Unless you can make it through wave 50 that is.

Halo Reach : Firefight

Horde, but with a wider sandbox to play in, a fuckton of customization options, and the addiction that comes with gaining cR to spend on armor doodads.

Modern Warfare 2 : Spec Ops

The main reason I miss Infinity Ward, and the only reason I would consider rejoining the fold of COD. Two players, tons of variety, tons of mayhem.

Borderlands

Phat loots, satisfying combat, tons of stats, challenges and questlines, humor and madness, all tailored for co-op? Sign me up.

Grand Theft Auto 4 : Mafia Work

Get some beers, some buddies and boot up a session of Mafia Work. If you don't end up with a ton of crazy stories that rival the best action movies, you're doing it wrong.

I actually liked the large amount of HP, the duels often came down to who chose the right weapon and delivered the best shots rather than who saw the other guy first. Of course, there was shit like host advantage and overpowered weapons, but it was worth playing for the moments when it worked. Plus, aside from host advantage, every player is a bullet sponge, and every player can charge for those overpowered weapons, you're on an equal playing field. Every player gets killed by a bullshit Boomshot to the back, just as every player will get a 3-in-1 with that weapon.

And speaking of the overpowered weapons, I would stick to player matches that removed crap like the Hammer of Dawn. It played better without stuff like that, but at the same time the power weapons added an element of urgency to the game, and some Execution matches would come down to an intense battle over a Boomshot or Hammer.

Don't get me wrong, the game had some major issues but the good outweighed the bad for me. I loved it for the small squads and intimate firefights, it was intense and super satisfying to curbstomp a dickhead teenager.

Team Fortress 2. I've played that game for about 700 hours now, just about more than the amount of time spent on all other the games I've played this generation.

Four player parties. Every. Single. Day.

Plus Dragon Quest IX, Borderlands and Uncharted 2.

You know, despite having played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of COD4, RE5 Mercs, MW2, Black Ops, etc...

I'm going with Wii fuckin' Sports. I purchased my Wii at launch and it just blew my friends away at the time. My place had seriously never been so popular, even all the girls were loving the absolute shit out of it. I remember launch day I called up one of my nearest mates and we played it for probably around eight hours straight. I was just amazed by how much fun I was having and when I think about it now, that was one of those magic moments in gaming for me. Obviously Wii Sports is old news now, but fuck me, when it first came out that shit went off. Felt good man.
