Your reaction if Retro Studios were making Mario Kart?

I want DKCR2 to bring back Kremlings, but not regular-ass vanilla Kremlings, I want pirate Kremlings.

Also, bring back Enguarde and find a way to make the water levels as fun as the ground levels. That would be an achievement in itself!

I love Retro's work in MK7. If it meant more courses like DK Jungle Temple and Shy Guy Bazaar in addition to awesome changes to the retro courses then I'd be very, very happy.

I love the pirate Kremlings but I honestly don't think fast, aggressive enemies would be a good fit with DKCR's style of bonkers terrain. The original trilogy's terrain was mostly flat and static to allow the enemies to do their thing. But thematically, please rip the fuck off DKC2's dark environments.

Water levels I would be ok with because I know Retro would come up with some amazing underwater vistas. Just as long as they're medium-fast paced.

they only made the retro courses...

The Iwata Asks article isn't entirely clear on what they made, actually:

http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/mario-kart-7/0/0
Morimoto (Nintendo): In terms of how we resolved that challenge with Retro, when we created this game, Nintendo produced half the courses and Retro produced the other half. Before they created new courses, we asked that they recreate 16 past courses which we call classic courses...

Tom (Retro): I thought that was a great way for us to start because we had the knowledge of what the overall course was...

Iwata (Nintendo): So you mean, by beginning with classic courses, you were able to get used to developing Mario Kart, something you hadn't done before...

...

Morimoto: Well, we haven't said much about the new courses, so I'll add a bit about them. These are concepts that Retro proposed to us, which were actually used as new courses.

With regard to the new coursesÂ… This is my fourth game in the series, and Retro sent some ideas that were so good that I was kicking myself, thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?!"

So it seems Retro predominantly worked on the classic courses, but they may have worked on some of the regular courses, and they definitely proposed new ideas for new courses.

I said the same thing about Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Them just emulating a pre-existing game and being like "LOOK! IT'S LIKE THE OLD THING" isn't what I'd want to see from them. Atleast they did Metroid and came up with something NEW for it.

I don't consider DKC:Returns a waste of talent because the game is just so darn good. Only someone really talented could come up with a game like that. In comparison, a Good-Feel DKC wouldn't be nearly as good.

Pirate Kremlings weren't any faster than the nekkid ones, were they? It's a moot point, anyways -- they could always redesign them, and actually they would redesign them, since a simple copy/paste wouldn't work in the series' radically overhauled style.

Figures. I don't know why he liked waggle so much. It's strange because it wasn't intuitive at all, which is what he's all about.
Miyamoto was also adamant about making gorilla-like motions to ground pound, right? Immersion.

Man's at least half-crazy now that I know he wasn't keen on swinging Bowser by the tail in SM64. :O

DKCR didn't have anything like Klap Trap, Kutlass, Rockcrocs, or the fast moving variants of Kritters/Gnawtys that were designed to hunt down and kill you. The tikis were slow moving enemies that acted mostly as space-controlling obstructions in your way. They didn't do more than shuffle back and forth. DKCR's plethora of dynamic platforms generally wouldn't allow them to do much more.

Just create new pirate Kremlings and AI routines that fit whatever gameplay style they come up with. The pirates, and the dark atmosphere especially, were so cool!

waste of talent

not because Mario Kart is bad (its actually fucking awesome) but because I dont see anything worthwhile Retro could bring to the formula. Might sound silly saying this but I personally dont think it needs much more tampering than what we already get with each iteration.

First post gaf meme strikes again.

Waste. Mario Kart is a great series, but it's one that doesn't require the kind of talent that Retro had under its belt. An up and coming Nintendo studio can handle Mario Kart and I'm sure it would still be great. Retro I believe should handle the bigger titles. A Star Fox from them would be cool I think. Not sure if that will go down though (I think there's more to Kamiya expressing interest in that series than anybody is letting on. Believe. Lol).

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing DKCR2, but I think they're doing a full blown 3D game, maybe even a new IP.

I would just wonder why they were doing it. Would be a waste of talent, as others have said.

I also don't want them doing a new Metroid, or a sequel to DKCR (yet, anyway). Don't get me wrong, both of those were great, but I would rather see Retro do something new. Give them a new IP to take a crack at, or let them do something that isn't a Nintendo IP.

I'd be extremely disappointed if Mario Kart turned out to be what Retro Studios is making. Seems like such a waste of talent.

Kremlings could work but it would take a lot of effort to integrate them into the levels in a way that makes sense. Needs major design overhauls. One of the reasons I get a bit caught up on this is that I've seen some suggestions that DKCR should have simply had Kremlings, and those suggestions seemed to ignore the fact that Returns' style of level design is almost a complete 180 from the originals. The amount of crazy shit simply doesn't give ground-based enemies room to do much of anything, and care and attention would have to be paid to make the mean crazy bipedal lizard man look not-awkward in that type of situation. You could reskin all of the Tikis in DKCR to Kremlings but they would look totally moronic with their slow movements. Its a tough balance. DKCR shifted the challenge of the game almost all the way toward pure-platforming, so the enemies were heavily de-emphasized. Though if Retro could pull it off for a sequel, I'd love to see it happen.

It absolutely could be pulled off. There are all sorts of tricks that can be done with animation to, in this case, make something bipedal look like it's moving at a natural speed while not clashing with Returns' dense and dynamic stage design.

I wouldn't be disappointed if they were working MK, but I'd prefer Metroid or something entirely new...RPG??

i'd probably be more disappointed if they're just making another Metroid
The DKCR announcement at E3 2010 was magic, partly because while it had been rumored they're working on DK, it still seemed so different from their previous work.

So what kind of announcement could cause that kind of magical stir again? Probably only Zelda, but that appears safely ruled out on multiple fronts. Maybe something completely out of left field like Star Tropics or Takamaru would generate that "WTF awesome" buzz again.

If Retro made the next Mario Kart it would probably be amazing. They might even do something about item options and more hardcore racing options.

They can still do the other things we all want them to do:
More Metroid
New Zelda
Fix Star Fox
More Donkey Kong
And a brand new original title

Magic

Retro should be working on next F-Zero

I'd love the art but I honestly don't think F-Zero would be that hard to design.

-Copy GX controls/physics
-Get a pen and paper then close your eyes. Draw some combination of straight lines and curves/circles for a few seconds, then connect the beginning to the end. If you need couse variety, do the above but when you're finished, flip a coin. Pipe track for heads, cylinder track for tails. Randomly turn some of those circles into loops. Repeat until you have a good number of tracks.
-Add track editor
-Add 30 player online multiplayer
-Bring back DEATH RACE
-Add economy system
-Allow players to bet currency on DEATH RACES and other online events with payouts to the winners
-profit

I'd be SO disappointed. I want them to work on some other franchise. ANY other franchise.

Hell, just take GX and do the following:

- 1080p 60fps
- Online
- Track editor
- Death Race

Make it an eShop release and call it a day.

EDIT: Ooo, I like Xtortionist's gambling idea. :O

Come on guys, they are so not working on Mario Kart.

In the past year they've hired guys from:
- Naughty Dog
- Vigil
- Junction Point
- BioWare Austin
- RedFly
- MoonBot Studios

They have positions dedicated to motion capture. And quotes from people like Kozlowsky (Naughty Dog) stating:
I am going to work on another project that I am super excited about. I can’t talk about it too much but if all goes well it might just be one of my crowning achievements as an artist….

Thanks for sharing this. :) If it weren't for Zelda already being ruled out (right?), it'd seem like that would be some good talent for it.

While I'm generally not a fan of the idea of Retro handling games normally done under EAD (Zelda "fans", I'm looking at you), I suppose it's not like they can do any worse than the folks who are working on it right now.

If they ever do make Mario Kart, I hope they add weapons.

Erm, you mean like shells? Banana peels? Bob-ombs?

How would I react?

But to be honest, I'd prefer that over another DKCR (not that it was bad, I'm just not clamoring for a sequel)

Retro wanted to make a car combat game with weapons but when Miyamoto asked them why the cars had weapons, they couldn't provide a satisfying answer so it was canned.

Obviously there was more to the game being canned but that's probably the reference.

I'd be pretty mixed on it. I like Mario Kart, and I feel like the series is getting slightly stale, sure. A different take on it may be nice. But that series isn't at all the kind of thing I expect from Retro. It's hard to imagine a radically reinvented Mario Kart, that isn't just another Mario Kart while still maintaining what I like about the series. Maybe they could do it. They managed for DKCR and MP. Though I'm hoping it's either 2D Metroid or a revival of some other classic IP.

Yeah, what was that called? Thunder Rally or something? Sounded like Twisted Metal.

Came from the new SSX. Currency becomes irrelevant after a while (you get way too much with nothing to buy) but as a concept and the way it ties into global events (online for X minutes, buy in, race a course unlimited times for the best time which places you into a payout tier) it's almost genius.

Obviously Miyamoto wouldn't be a good fit at Platinum.

There's actually precedent for this in a Nintendo game: Brawl had a coin-betting feature in spectator matches. :)
