Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch

Well, I just got back from seeing it. I didn't love it as much as I hoped to, but I didn't hate it either. I can see why 80% of critics gave it a poor review - the movie runs almost entirely on Video Game Logic™. Being a gamer, I was entirely ok with that. The overall story's not hard to follow - just the action sequences don't run on real world logic. My biggest problem with the movie was probably that it was actually pretty depressing.

I greatly enjoyed all the action scenes, and my only real disappointment was that Sweat Pea never once used her sword. The girls all looked great, and the imagery was fantastic.

Overall, if I had to give the movie a grade, I'd give it a C+.

Just got back and yeaaaah. Fun action
( I told my brother that each "action sequence" is basically a video game level...it even had a tutorial guy)
.

Shit story, awesome overacting ( Mustache guy was such a stupid yet endearing villain for no real reason), I really liked the cheesy random soundtrack.

But yet I can't recommended it but I liked it.

Turn your brain off and enjoy the action shit and fuck the "story".

Zack Snyder: Sucker Punch is like a Video Game that Doesn't Exist

There are three blonde girls and a girl named Blondie.

Lol the main one!
who had to sacrifice herself

Anyways did anyone almost cry when
we found out that the main blonde chick's goal was to sacrifice herself for the other blonde chick??? I was like nooooo I don't care about the other one, the main chick had her freaking lil sis killed by the bastard step father and she was put in there. She didn't deserve to get sacrificed...but I guess her sacrificing herself for that blonde chick is to make up for not being able to help her lil sister...still a dam shame. :(

Nope, but it's completely true. Anyone who doesn't want their movies to be "like a video game" probably isn't going to enjoy this movie. I, however, did.

Actually,
Baby Doll killed her own sister by accident. The bullet ricocheted off the pipe. I think that's the reason she had to sacrifice herself.

Holy sh!t really!!!
I thought it was the stepfather gotdam!!! lol now it all makes sense!!!...dam this movie is even more sad!! :( ...it's kind of like the 300 ending with everyone dying including the main character lol

I can see why some people hate this movie though.

It's the same reason why I hated Ninja Assassin...The story was ass and to me the action wasn't good enough to make me forget it ( although I was in a really bad mood at the time)

and yet here the story was ass but the Final Fantasy Advent Children action spoke to the 13 year old in my black heart enough for me to overlook it.

Its probably going to get trashed and put int the WORSE MOVE EVA discussions at the end of the year and yet I can't say that those people are wrong..but I liked it.

Very strange.

This film was terrible to its core. Action scenes were ALL EYEROLL INDUCING. The worst books from a grocery store are probably more entertaining.

So disappointed.

0/10.

This was just a flat out terrible movie. I wouldn't wish on my worst fucking enemies to see this movie in theaters...and I fucking watched Gigli in theaters...FUCKING GIGLI!

Anyone who defends this movie is missing half their brain, I can't stress it enough. They deserve a fucking lobotomy after sitting through this trash and I'm die hard Zach Snyder fan, check any of my history on movie posts, and I'm pro Snyder, but this movie was pure fucking shit.

Goddamn I'm glad alcohol is a memory eraser.

I really enjoyed this 'movie.' It should win Best Cinematography, and the Blu-Ray will be the ultimate reference disc that lights up television sets in the home theater section of Best Buys across the country.

I understand the scathing reviews and all the hate. Zack Snyder didn't make this movie to please the Roger Ebert's of the world. He pulled a Charlie Sheen, gave the bird to Hollywood and committed political suicide by making a fanservice movie for the nerds who go to Comicon to stand up and cheer for movies like Aliens vs Ninja.

It's a 2 hour music video montage of Call of Duty, Kill Bill, and Lord of the Rings set to a soundtrack of 70s and 80s songs remixed by Marilyn Manson. Snyder may never work in Hollywood again, but this 'movie' will play annually in a packed ballroom of the San Diego Convention Center in July to an audience of nerds who worship him.

You need to chill out with the ad hominem attacks. I don't insult you for liking something I disagree with.

I think nerds have standard too, this 2-hour long trailer will be forgotten like The Spirit.

Damn!

Didn't like the movie either. Guess it's just not my thing.

The Spirit was garbage that I turned off and couldn't sit through. I'll buy the Sucker Punch Blu-Ray to see the director's cut, and I don't buy Blu-Rays any more. The Rotten Tomatoes scores sum it up well. 20% favorable from critics. 65% favorable reader reviews. There is a demographic that will enjoy this movie, small as it may be. I think a lot of them reside on this forum.

Because most of the shit I like isn't trash like this. I LOVE ZACH SNYDER. I will defend his style of directing and editing to the grave, but dear lord, never ever let this man write and direct an original story.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT AD HOMINEM means! Just don't led Zach direct another creation of his. I felt literally like I lost brain cells after watching this movie and I didn't even have the benefit of being intoxicated to say that. I was sober...SOBER!

lol at the people saying Synder won't work in Hollywood anymore. Dude is knee deep in bringing Superman back on screen.

I heard he's losing control of that project which IMO could be for the better, because after this movie...all faith is lost.

I would have defended his actions and motives to the grave before this movie. He fucked up.

To be fair, the next Superman is being hastily put together.

Regardless, I hope it somehow comes together despite a lot signs leading to that not being the case.

So for someone who thought Transformers 2, was a fantastic over the top/leave your brain at the door movie and loved 300 and Watchmen, will I like this movie?

You liked TF2? Yes, then you will definitely like Sucker Punch.

Liked it very much (T2) Laughed tru the whole movie, so over the top, even making a visit to the kitchen a action scene and blowing the whole house to pieces. Thats good fun in my book. The greates B(C?) movie of all time. Will look forward to this then :)

Sucker Punch was the first project of Snyder's that was a non-adaptation or remake. It was our first glimpse into the mind of Snyder......akin to the mind of a 10 year old with even worse storytelling ability.

now he's making Superman with a David Goyer script. :(

can't write it off just yet. But it if sucks he's finished. And Superman will have to wait another few years for reboot.

He was hired because of his ability to turn on a project on time and on budget, precisely because the movie has an abrubt timeline for being made.

And? It has a deadline? It has a budget? Oh fuck it's being rushed.

I loved all Zack's films, did not see that owl movie though. And Watchmen is in my top 3 in the last 5 years or so.

Doubt i will like this, but i'll check it out.

I'm surprised anyone got as invested in any of the characters as it seems you did. I just couldn't find myself caring about anyone or anything in the story past the point when they actually had to start acting (past the intro sequence which, oddly enough, I thought was excellent).

Despite that I didn't hate the movie I just didn't feel like I was invested in any of the characters or the story once it got going.
I really wish they'd decided to skip one of the levels of abstraction bits. Either work entirely within the dancing whorehouse universe (meh, no thanks) or actually try to establish the dream within a dream world as the sole universe to work within. Until the eventual return to actual reality of course.

I think anyone could have gotten the full experience this movie can provide simply by muting everything but the music.

To be fair he'll probably do a better job with that since he does do a decent job with material that already has an established lexicon.

I greatly enjoyed Scott Pilgrim, which was waaaay more "video game-y" than this in my mind but I didn't care much for Sucker Punch. Saying a movie is "like a video game" makes me pretty leery though since I expect my movies characters and stories to actually make an impact. Not so much my video games though since art direction and gameplay are the far bigger drivers there. I'm not saying video games don't have story/characters simply that their characters/story typically aren't well formed or especially impactful. Which I suppose in that way, yes, Sucker Punch WAS very much like a video game. Visual flair without the real meat and bones engaging characters and story provide.

I really, really like it.
Visually it's simply stunning, and i loved the fact the action sequences truly feel like videogames.
It's a pity they didn't create Sucker Punch as a cross-media project: a manga would have been rad, and a videogame (not a shitty tie-in, of course) would have been a blast.
The story has a lot in common with Inception (even some inconsistencies! :P), and maybe paradoxically it's even too much for the kind of experience it is.

Oh and the soundtrack is ACE.

Definitely i'll go back to see it again.

I didn't like Sucker Punch as much as I thought I would. It couldn't decide what kind of movie it wanted to be, veering between a film you just wanted to appreciate for the design and action, and ten having to sit through really preachy prose that stumbles for 'deep' and instead hits 'tired'.

It felt like four ridiculously awesome and visually kick ass music videos strung together with awkward pacing and short lived characters. I'd prefer to just watch all the action scenes with no in-between bits at all.

I did love the sexy action and especially liked the scene with the dragon.

It is being rushed. It has to be finished and released before the rights go to the estates of Siegel and Schuster. I know that all movies have a deadline and a budget, but when it is crammed through production and planning like this is going to be, it is rushed. It is not like they had the idea and everything set up, then made a schedule. They had the deadline before any planning was started.

Anyone thinks that the action scenes, even being 2D, were done as if they were really 3D. All those effects and objects trying to blast off the screen.

For fucks shake, there are movies that dont use it at all and 3D is crammed in, why dont do it in this movie, it would have made an spectacle of it.

And Im of the opinion that the only good 3D in movies ive seen in the cinema were Avatar and Jackass 3D.

My wife and I both dug it. Had no problem caring for the characters and their situation. It wasn't moving cinema, but it was entertaining and well worth the ticket price.

I would have shortened the opening and closing monologues, though.

Yeah, Snyder being in charge of Superman is a darn shame. I love Superman.

They need to kick this hack out of that movie and get a real director like Paul W. S. Anderson or Brett Ratner direct instead.

I'm going to see Paul this afternoon and I think I'm going to double feature it and Sucker Punch.

(Speaking of which, Double Feature Finder is quite useful).

I'm expecting to hate it, but I'll admit to at least wanting to see it.
Nice website. I will use that later I think.

And good luck with "Paul." It wasn't as terrible as some have made it out to be, but it is nowhere near as good as "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead." It is still an enjoyable couple of hours, but nothing really special.

Yeah, I'm not expecting much out of Paul. Pegg + Frost are good, but not nearly as good as Wright + Pegg + Frost.

Are you sure? If that's actually the case, they did a shitty job conveying it.

I saw this last night with some friends. Is it something to do? Sure. Is it worth $10? No. I looked at the entire film as a satire of overplayed action themes in current films. By plopping the characters into obscure settings with absolutely no threading story and making these sequences as absurd as possible, Synder is perchance poking fun at the current state of film-making. Overall, however, for being a film based solely on action sequences, I felt they were poorly done and did not hold my interest. CG was emphasized too much and constantly un-immersed me. I had no investment in any of the characters.

Again, not worth your $10.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who saw it last night and loved it so much that he's driving over two hours today to get to an IMAX theater to see it again.

... Also worth noting, he has terrible taste.
