Zelda 3DS: LttP, OoT, or Wind Waker style?

As long as I'm not scratching and poking around with a stylus to move I'm fairly open minded on how it looks.

2D, for sure. And as far as style goes, I dunno. I kinda feel like Zelda needs a major reboot. There's too many issues in the series now. It needs to be taken apart and reworked.

I should take an afternoon to write out my dream Zelda reboot.

You should get your wish with the Wii U Zelda....that's exactly what Aonuma wants to do with the next title.

And with Miyamoto out of the way, expect to see more radical innovation in the next iteration.

For a 2D installment (but a REAL 2D, not that crap they made for the DS Zeldas) I would love a sprite-style art with the quality of animations and beauty of the Mario & Luigi saga. Something mixing the sobriety of A Link to the past with the charm of The Minish Cap (which was pretty attractive visually), and all in accordance with 3DS posibilities.

For a 3D one I guess they could recycle the Ocarina of Time 3D style, but with a good modelling for the characters and zones and better textures in general. OoT 3D interiors were outstanding, I wish all the game looked like that.

Zelda 3DS is not happening. hopefully.

WiiU needs to be saved, and Zelda resources should be 100% directed at the "real" Zelda WiiU.

the IP has more value on home consoles than portables ones.

Zelda 3DS should be done by a 3rd party with a GREAT game, that will sell better with a Zelda skin.

Let it be a good Zelda for it's own merits.

By this I mean please don't use the DS Zeldas style. Please.

PLEASE

Not only should they use the DS style they should just be the DS Zelda games. The 3DS will finally make the graphics not look poop (won't comment on anythings else regarding the games)

LTTP style without ever having to use the stylus. At all. No stylus. None.
Not even to enter your name? That's just stupid.

Maybe something along the lines of Fantasy Life's 3D. I definitely don't want it to be like OoT since that's what the Wii U is for. The 3DS Zelda should play like LttP/Minish Cap.

It's been confirmed to be a real thing. In fact, it's probably just a couple of months away from being announced.

Characters/faces aside, I would say Twilight Princess goes for that. Everything other than the characters themselves try to go for a realistic look.

Well, kind of. It looks darker which is at odds with the rest of the series (and "dark" = "realism" in modern usage), but I don't think it ever tries to emulate any specific style of realism. It's just a gritter and more grounded take on the universe, which had been pretty lively and whimsical up till that point.

Let's not get lost in semantics.

When people talk about realism in Zelda they refer to games with graphics in the style of Twilight Princess.

In other words... Twilight Princess. Because Twilight Princess is the only game in the series which looks like that. :p

I'd imagine it'd be OoT/ MM style so they can reuse assets.

Which would be fine by me if that lest them get it out faster.

Talking about the texture work and stuff. It looks more realistic than any other Zelda artstyle. Personally, I think it is just a suped up version of the OoT/MM style with more detail.

Considering that they'll put out WW HD on the Wii U and that I'd like them to use a semi-realistic style for the brand new Wii U episode, I'd chose LttP style for the next 3DS installment.

didnt like the DS games at all, sadly
but after OoT 3d, I guess they'll make an original 3d zelda.

I'd rather it have its own style, but out of those: Link to the Past. I'm a big fan of 80's-early-90's Japanese art and LttP was one of the last good examples of that.

As much as I love Wind Waker's art, they really managed to give it a bad rap with the DS games. I hope we never see it again, outside of the WW remake of course.

OoT and TP have fairly generic art. It works just fine, but it doesn't really have an outspoken identity. I'm all for going extreme, don't meet someone half-way and just go all-out in one direction or another. It'll create some detractors (see Wind Waker), but it really makes games unique and not part of the rest.

They've already said their working on one. So this post is a waste of time.

I don't want to see a realistic approach on Zelda 3DS because the hardware isn't good enough.

I'd prefer a cell-shaded approach with this art-style:

And please, no silly gimmicks this time.

Focus on creating an awesome overworld, interesting NPCs and dungeons.

This, bonus points if the you can actually see the items on the model.

I feel like the overhead non-vehicle perspective of the DS Zeldas was a reaction to the physical limitations of the DS.

Ocarina of Time 3DS demonstrates that a full 3D Zelda is possible on a portable system. And considering Nintendo's other pushes to 3D in their IPs (Pokemon X/Y being 3D, Mario Land becoming 2.5D, Fire Emblem Awakening having 3D battles, Kid Icarus in full 3D), a fully 3D handheld Zelda is the next logical step in the evolution of the series.

Glad you mentioned this.

The return-to-dungeon template needs to be done with. Once I've explored and conquered one dungeon, I shouldn't have to return and re-conquer it. Keep giving me something fresh, something different. Adventures are about moving forward, exploring new things...not revisiting the same hellholes.

Its funny how people rage against the same process they go through in every Zelda-like, Metroid-like game when you bring it into a different focus. Still say the second to last floor of the Temple of the Ocean King is top tier Zelda dungeoning. They pretty much fixed your complaints with the Spirit Tower(?) in Spirit Tracks away.

I will like that. Assuming the remake included a full rewrite of the game engine.
OoT style was even more shinny and colorfull in OoT3D, in fact in was a little con over the 3D remake. It doesn't need to be even more cartoonish or cell-shaded.

Well done, it could be funny to see Termina again, in a game who isn't Majora's Mask, or masks related at all. Just re-use and expand this world.

Slightly off-topic, but is Spirit Tracks really that bad? Phantom Hourglass was average at best for me, but I feel obligated to pick up ST sometime just because it's the only Zelda game I haven't played through :(

For variety (and my own personal bias) i would rather have they made a top down LTTP style 2D Zelda game on 3DS and keep the 3D ones on Wii U

Call me crazy but I thought Skyward Sword was a great balance of Wind Waker's cel shading and Twighlight Princess' more realistic style. Just do something like that in 2.5 D like Mario 3D Land.

I thought it was much better. Fixed the problem with the central dungeon idea and other dungeons are much much better. Puzzles that actually challenge.

The train is mixed. I liked it but others hate it.

Basically go in with a clear mind. If you think of it as another phantom hourglass you'll just dampen your expectations of it.

Majora's Mask was just an expansion of the visuals created in Ocarina of Time.

Four Swords Adventure was a bit of a tougher call because it draws a lot from a few Zelda games but you can condense its style to a mix of Wind Waker and A Link to the Past. The mix it presents does give it its own identity but it's not as great as the differences you'd see between Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. If we're talking about style at a deeper level though (i.e. past the visuals) then I take mostly everything back.

It has better gameplay than PH. In fact, it's a really good game for the most part.

It's too bad the bad part is game breakingly bad. The train rides are just so horrible.

Did you even read my post? I said "since Majora's Mask". After Ocarina of Time.

The style does not matter that much to me right now. What they should be working on is making sure they dont pad the game and that they dont add intrusive handholding. The dungeons in SS are god tier but the shitty padding and handholding bring down the experience.

Link to the Past, obviously. Though I'd really like a new Zelda game which rewards exploration. I want to feel like I've found something no one else has when I'm exploring, and I don't want a rubbish piece of heart of useless 200 rupees for it.

Don't forget the flute parts. So, so, so bad.

On a 3DS screen? Easily a top down 2D game. I find 3D very hard to follow on small screens. I'm a firm believer of maximising your media, and with small screens 2D does this best.
