Zelda BOTW Patch 1.11 released

Forests are night and day after this patch. As someone who's about halfway through BotW I am absolutely thrilled. My biggest complaint with the game is now fixed.

A big "fuck you" would've been scrapping release all together on Wii U. IMO.
That would have been far worse, I agree. But when I think about how long we were waiting for the game to release on the Wii U, only to see its performance turn out so bad...I just can't help but feel like that, you know?

Probably wouldn't even be able to patch it since my Gamepad doesn't work, unless you can patch games using only the Pro Pad.
Patches download automatically, and yes you can access the download manager to check if it's downloading (or even if downloads in background are active) with the pro controller.

YOU CAN GET

Yes:

Saying the game is "technically ambitious" is just an excuse in my opinion.

The game was developed for the Wii U in the first place. It's Nintendo's job to make it run normally for the platform they decided to design it for.

It's like GTA V on the PS3/360. All were indeed to ambitious for their respective platforms and no amount of tweaking or optimization will make it run like it should. It would take obvious scaling back of content/assets to achieve that.

I see the Wii U version as a pity release for a platform that was always in it's death throes. The Switch version, properly tailored to the platform, would have seen some fairly significant upgrades and would easily be a 1080p30 game.

@Vitet: That is some serious black crush you have going on.

I did some testing right now, and this could be entirely placebo, but it does feel improved on Wii U. Here's how it feels to me:
K
akariko
: Before: 20 with sub-20 dips. Now: Alternates between 30 and 20.
K
orok
F
orest
: Before: Alternating between 20 and sub-20. Now: Mostly 20.
H
yrule
C
astle
: Before: Mostly 20. Now: 30 with occasional 20.

Again, it might be placebo, but it feels considerably more playable now. Hopefully Digital Foundry will release a video soon.

It's a photo with my mobile camera, it's much less accentuated. In fact, I have a setting on my TV that crushes blacks and exaggerates colors, but I prefer the less saturated colors the game defaults.

HELL. YES.

I'm only barely into
Zoras Domain
..maybe ~15 hours of playtime on Wii U version. Bought it at launch then went on vacation and have been super busy at work so haven't touched the game since.

I planned on diving back into the game this weekend so this is perfect fucking timing. :D

If they deigned to take the time to make the game run much better on the Switch, and barely so on the Wii U, how are we Wii U owners not screwed over? It's like a big "fuck you" to everyone who bought and supported their failing console.

Crossing my fingers for another update for the Wii U version.

I have a feeling Nintendo are already pushing Wii U to its limit with BotW. You can only optimise so much for the Wii U. Then Nintendo should cut down the foliage, shadows and lower the resolution of the Wii U version. In the end you can't get parity with the Switch version when the Wii U is a lot weaker, especially with a docked Switch and devs having three times the memory to work with.

Do people get mad when a console game gets ported over to PC and performs 100x better? Better HW = Better performance. I understand the Wii U version is less than ideal, but it is what it is.

It's not a big fuck you, if you decided to buy it for the Wii U. There are plenty of videos showing the performance of the game for both versions. You paid 60 to play BotW, I paid €390 (not including additional accessories, like Pro controller for €70) to play BotW, even though I already have a Wii U. That's a lot of money for basically one game, but I wanted better performance and portability. I also don't want to buy any more games for a console that's not gonna be supported anymore. So, there are up-and downsides for both of us.

I just got there, but I think I've put in a lot more than 15 hours just exploring. Excited for this patch, hoping pop in isn't worse.

I could see people being a bit upset considering the game was promised for the Wii U first, and for a long time. There's no doubt Switch should get higher resolution and effects, but the base Wii U game should perform solid.

Good on them for doing this, I was honestly beginning to worry we wouldn't see any performance boost! Indeed the forest areas are improved now :)

Alas it's hit just as I'm about to hit my final shrine, d'oh! Ah well, at least it'll improve the experience for future completionist stuff.

Honestly I could be 25-30 hours in I have no idea lol..I've done a lot of shrines and just messing around exploring.

I just checked the alien dropship no lag at all.
Even when attacked by 5+ aliens.
This patch is amazing

If anyone has been able to reliably reproduce the multiple successive Blood Moon glitch, that might be a place to start. I think it may be related to zoning into areas where the Blood Moon occurs but doesn't trigger a respawn, but didn't test this thoroughly myself.

Yes, the Blood Moon glitch happens when you put the Switch to sleep too many times with the game running. You can avoid it completely by exiting the game every now and then. There is also another glitch related to putting the game to sleep and that's when the rune reticle drifts upwards on its own when waking the game from sleep.

Hopefully these two bugs can be solved with a system or game patch, but they can be completely avoided.

Doooooope. By far the biggest problem with this game is fps issues. 95 hours in and I've got some stuff yet to do so this will help me.

And the game is released for the Wii U. Can't say that about games like The Last Guardian, where Yoshida keep saying that it's still a PS3 game for the longest time. I understand some people aren't too happy about it. I do think Nintendo should've gone for a stable framerate. But the graphics, physics and world size is just too ambitous for the Wii U. All Nintendo can do is to scale back the graphics. Not sure people want that. In an ideal world all games should perform solid, but unfortunately that's not the reality.

I expect further optimizations. There are 2 parts to the DLC and I'm sure both will require more testing of the game for Nintendo. And because the second pack will come late in the year, that means they will be playtesting this game for a long time.

I just received the update on Wii U. I went to Kakariko and Hateno Village and in terms of framerate I really don't notice an improvement. Still a slideshow when I stand near the clothing store and rotate the camera.

I however did not notice it looking any blurrier, which I'm damn glad about.

It's concept art for an idea they had.

It's as real as:

Nope, the picture and what you see is 100% real.

They spent 4-5 years aiming for the Wii U target. They had less than a year(?) to get the Switch version running. There should likely be much more remaining optimization boosts to be made on the Switch, since the machine has more horse power and it wasn't the target machine.

And what's running normally? WW:HD and TP:HD has frame drops.

I still got a 1-2 second freeze while fighting enemies (on the Switch). It's also still possible to provoke drops in Kakariko. Maybe they improved it a bit, but it's not fixed.

Am on my way to get a switch this afternoon but will only be using it in handheld mode at all times. I'm assuming frame rates are totally fine in handheld mode. The issues are all docked mode correct?

This was the first place I went to, haha. It's amazing how different our playthroughs can be. You don't see that in open world games much these days.

My son is much farther along in the game than I am, yet I've uncovered the whole map and he still has two areas left to uncover. I think he finished the game yesterday with one area still uncovered.

I'm an explorer. If my travels further the main story, cool. If not...I wonder what's on the other side of that hill.....

60 hours in, still need to find
two more Zelda memories
plus barely did any shrines,
just enough to get me the master sword.
So this patch is really good news for me. Glad it came to Wii U.

From what I've played of Wind Waker HD the framerate is much much more acceptable than that of BOTW. Haven't played TP HD yet, but I doubt it's as bad as BOTW.

And even if so, that doesn't justify bad performance. Make the game look a bit worse for all I care. I'm not the only one who finds it unacceptable

What about shrines, are they blurrier?

Did the patch just auto install?

I had the Gamepad on for a few minutes or so and when I returned to it to see if there was a patch it said update had finished. I then fired up Zelda.

Haven't tested any shrines yet. Is it said they are more blurry?

Seriously dude... It's a thread about a patch, why put untagged spoilers in there ?
I know right? Not to mention that no one's mentioned the cave where you can unlock an Ocarina-esque music mechanic somewhere in Faron.

Kidding. Or am I..?

There is also another glitch related to putting the game to sleep and that's when the rune reticle drifts upwards on its own when waking the game from sleep.

I get this drift even without waking it from sleep. I've basically only been playing BotW in hand-held mode and don't use sleep mode at all. I can only reliably fix it by going back into controller settings and 'changing' the grip.
