Zelda BOTW Patch 1.11 released

Let's just quickly scan the patch notes to confirm-

I mean, I never read them, but do patch notes ever detail how optimisations contained in the patch are brought about? Like, it seems strange to me that they would say "yeah, we dropped the res down even further to get 3 fps bonus from the game." That seems like a sure way to get a shitstorm over oneself.

I don't know about console folk, but PC releases tend to receive detailed notes yes. If you read them you will find very specific parameters being discussed. Dev teams' performance varies.

edit: i don't think it should be a shitstorm at all and still manage to enjoy Dark Souls II even after seeing the trailers. :P

I haven't noticed any differences in graphics quality on Wii U. The picture posted before looks, to me, indistinguishable from how the game looked pre-patch. People do know that the texture (and especially shadow) resolution was very poor to start with, and the game would drop resolution to sub-native on both platforms before the patch, right? Because I'm wondering if people are just now scrutinizing the it more because of the update.

Not trying to sound like a dick here,

Sometimes we succeed without even trying.

200 Korok seeds in 120 hours is pretty good in my book. I'm sitting at around 160 with around 110 hours. People having less than 50 in 100+ hours (as has been often reported here on GAF), that I don't get.

I started the game after the update and immediately glided over to a terrible looking texture and took a screenshot. The game is obviously now running sub native, but I'm too lazy to count pixels.

The picture is not 100% representative since PTBI was adding SMAA, but it's pretty clear something is very wrong regardless.

Some very high places tend to be less polished as it's less likely that you go over there. How about using a "normal" zone, like the Hyrule Field, instead of that awful example?

So we are certain that the image quality didn't suffer on the Switch with the new patch?

"Improved Motion" appearing over and over in From's notes strikes me as Engrish that somehow became accepted.

That sounds like something Mass Effect Andromeda would desperately need.

Interesting, that really is extremely detailed. Nintendo could definitely do a bit better in that regard.

So are there improved framerates on the wii u version or is it basically the same?
Yes, plenty of people have reported improvements, though the fps issues are by no means gone yet.

My personal opinion....

Resolution scale is less aggressive, but level of Detail and shadow quality took a massive hit.

Framerate is definitely improved

I think that's almost certainly what's happening.

I haven't noticed any difference in LOD or texture filtering(which has always been bad). Shadow quality, I never would notice either way, so if they reduced that to fix the framerate, fine by me.

Be warned, I updated the Wii U version and really regret it. The resolution is lower, shadows look far worse, texture detail takes a big hit and the draw distance is much closer. It's a huge visual downgrade.

Yeah, I should have waited too.

Well, since I beated Ganon already and only needed to look for the other Shrines and Seeds, I might as well stop and play the rest on the Switch.

Let's play Nier now

I'm not sure if you're talking just about Wii U but the shadow quality is definitely lower on Switch when docked imo. They always looked too high quality to me which is why I thought they were causing the framedrops before.

The Switch docked version looked at times higher and then lower resolution to me when I played it last night so I don't know if it's now rendering the game at dynamic 1080p instead of dynamic 900p. COuld just be my imagination lol.

I guess we will find out when NXGamer and DF get their videos up.

That's not quite correct. The GDC panel said that they needed to do no optimisations beyond porting the code to get the Switch version to run as well as the WiiU version. They did do some optimisations to improve it beyond that, but my guess is that there is definitely more ground to be won in that regard.

When in the video did they say the done optimisations to the Switch version? I've only seen the slide that said no optimisation.

I'm pretty sure texture detail looks reduced. Shadows I would never notice but the draw distance didn't seem as good yesterday.

yeah I'm waiting a few days until DF gets a video up before updating

You're right, 20fps is totally acceptable. That cinematic experience /s

Yeah because that was totally what I was saying and you're not cherry-picking to make me sound like a low-framerate zealot.

The framedrops (and even more rarely, freezes) were not constant and it was not running 20 fps at all times. But if it happened (usually very briefly or in specific, low-conflict environments), it does not ruin the game for me. And for some people it literally does ruin the game. Even though it's just occasional! I can't even comprehend how you can live like that....

Something else I noticed in the Switch docked version was less environmental mist effects in the Zonai ruins part. I'm not complaining because that was one of the worst areas for framerate drops before and it was much, much smoother even when fighting three enemies at the same time after the patch.

I'm not sure if they toned down or removed the DOF effect when targeting an enemy. I'll check later if NX and DF don't remember to cover it.

Even with some of these things toned down or removed I'm more than happy to give them up for the new much smoother experience. As I said in a previous post the feeling of controlling Link felt much better too which I guess is down to an decrease in controller latency from the improved framerate.

If the game does look worse, is it possible to uninstall the update?

In my experience, I did notice on two separate occasions shadows that looked sharper/more pixely than anything I had experienced before. Couldn't have been placebo effect because I had read someone complaining about the shadows before I started playing.

Anyways I'm not crazy about this update and I might not want it but it's already installed lol. Now if they had fixed Moblins it'd be a different story...

Reducing Shadow Quality is the oldest trick in the book but I think they weren't that great to start with, were they? I'd take better framerates over shadowquality anyday.

You can do this on the wiiu, if you have homebrew i believe.

I haven't seen any graphical difference, except the framerate is stable now when running in certain parts of The Great Plateau, where it used to struggle.

Honestly, I don't think I noticed any performance increase when docked. Still a stuttering mess in Korok Forest. Would be pretty upset to learn visuals were downgraded for no perceivable benefit .

Is that area just as bad as it was for you before? We've been playing docked the whole time and while there is still some frame stuttering for us in that area, it is not as bad as it was before. We also ventured to a wooded area and we've often had a bit of slowdown in those areas but didn't have any this time.

Korok Forest is improved but still has issues, definitely. That said, most other places that had issues are great now. There were a lot of chuggy smaller forests throughout the overworld, lots of trees and grass, that are nice and smooth now.

I don't know. I'm in the overworld seeing shadows and fighting moblins far more than I am in towns, that one forest, or on the Great Plateau. The rest of the game ran fine.

Anyone else think it's running at 1080p in docked mode now? The picture I'm seeing on my TV seems to indicate that. Maybe it's just me though, idk.

Locations aren't fucking spoilers. I'm 1 hour into the game and it won't matter a lick of difference if I see the name of some place that's hours and hours away - if I even remember it by then. All the blacked out, spolierphobia BS is making this thread a chore to read.
In this case, the frame rate is now pretty great at Link's Tomb and the and the Shrine of Ganon's True Master.

They're amazing to get early game and maybe even fun before you've seen all of the types, eventually though I stopped caring about chasing down every hint of Korok I saw and just placed markers until I ran out of stamps.

I ended the game with around 350, maybe a third of those I got while trying to find the last 15 or so shrines, hah.

That one slideshow place definitely performs better on Switch now, though not not consistent 30 while spinning the camera. Nice to see they addressed it.

I'm pretty sure that all the mention about how it looks better/worse are placebo effects. It seems like the exact same game, but with extra optimizations about the framerate.
