Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward ("Good People Die") - US 3DS/Vita release, fall

*bursts into the thread*

Just got the
Knife
ending in 999! HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIT! I actually flinched when
I got shanked
! Then I stared at the real-life reflection of my eyes on the shiny DS screen and realized how shocked they were, lol. But... BUT...
WHO KILLED ME? AM I DEAD FOR GOOD? AND IT BETTER NOT BE JUNE!
My heart couldn't take it if that were the case. :(

Hopefully there's a way for everything to work out happily ever after... :(

Now I saved and what the heck are these new options on the main menu? I can't remember off-hand but each had the word "Memories" in it.......?

Help!

*glances at clock -- only 1:30 a.m. Work tomorrow, but... 999!*

EDIT: OK, did some looking online and it seems "Memories of Escape" is just a way to replay the puzzle rooms, right? And so I want to go to "Start with memories," and take different doors this time. Here's my plan:
My first playthrough was 4 -> 7 -> 6 -> Knife. So for the second playthrough, I'll go 4 -> 3 -> 2 -> Sub. For the third, I'll go 4 -> 8 -> 1 -> Axe. For the fourth, I'll go 5 -> 8 -> 6 -> Safe. And then for the final playthrough, by which point I'll have seen all of the puzzle rooms (I used a flowchart to avoid duplicating rooms), I will go 4 -> 7 -> 1 -> True (I've already hit all four story checks, like giving Lotus the bookmark).

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY.

Heh, wait until you see the other endings. In respect to impact, though, I would recommend
axe before sub
, but it's your call.

Begin with Memories lets you start from the beginning while keeping track of choices you've already made in previous plays, graying out anything that you already picked before (the ones you haven't will remain in white). Also, you'll be able to fast-forward through text that's already been read, but not anything you haven't seen, so you won't have to worry about skipping anything new by accident. Puzzles, however, will have to be repeated.

Excellent. I also edited my post with my game plan for the next playthrough. :)

And don't forget that you can skip/fast forward through text you've already read now :)

Also, it will automatically go back to normal reading mode whenever you hit text you haven't encountered yet ;)

I'm interested in getting Virtue's Last Reward when it comes out but I didn't enjoy 999. Hell, I didn't even make it past the first puzzle while using a guide. I'm sure I would have liked the game's story but I just didn't understand what I was supposed to do. I’m not good at puzzle games in general, I only managed to beat Catherine by putting it on the easiest setting and retrying over and over.

Akselziys, if I couldn't get past the first puzzle in 999 should I even bother with Virtue? I want to support you guys and the devs so I'll probably buy the game anyway, it'd just be nice to actually get past the tutorial.

lololol you ain't seen nothing yet man. I can assure you that much. With every scrap of information that comes your way, with every theory you try to divine... with every revelation that seems to dawn upon you... whatever you think you might know is all feeble and worthless til the very end.

Well, I'd still try to delve into 999 before VLR, even if you need to use spoiler free walkthroughs to navigate your way to success :)

As for VLR, its initial puzzle will be pretty straightforward, so I wouldn't worry too much, but if you ever run into trouble you can either
toggle the puzzle to Easy mode where your other teammates will give you hints
or you can try checking out a walkthrough.

This I really liked.
Since it made multiple playthoughs back to back fun.
Being able to skip the text made me get all the endings in 5 days.

Heh, now consider that that one's pretty much the most underwhelming/tamest ending...

It really is a convenient thing. Knowing pretty much everything already, my second 100% playthrough of the game still took me about 20 hours according according to the 3DS's log. Don't wanna imagine how much longer it would've been without being able to skip text.

I'm now on my way to the sub ending, using Right on the Dpad to skip through text and quickly arrive at the new decisions (where the skip feature conveniently stops, and where past options are greyd out). I'm past the most text-heavy junction in the game, where the characters all first meet and exchange codenames and realize the dangers of REDs and DEADs. Now I'm at the B Deck Cabin with June, where I saved for the night. Time to go to bed, but man, what an amazing game. If I had to nitpick this second playthrough so far, it's that when I'm skipping text and arrive at a junction, the question that precedes the choice sometimes isn't on the same page, so I might not know the context of what I'm being asked to do. But other than that, it's all good. And boy did I tear through that first room's puzzle real quick, knowing now what to do. :)

I'm pretty sure you can read previous text. Unless you mean that that's blocked during decisions, which I can't remember if it happens or not.

Hmm, no way to go back and read a previous page of text, at least not that I'm aware of, but maybe I didn't experiment with the buttons enough. Regardless, most of the time it's clear by way of context clues what's going on, if I happen to skip past the question. And half of the time I'll remember it from my previous playthrough. I have my handy cheat sheet ready so I'm prepared to pounce on the new doors as I reach them!

Anyway, I'm all paranoid that maybe
June stabbed me
, but no one spoil it for me. :-\

Can't remember what button it is (either Select or Up or something), but if you press it during dialogue sequences it brings up a log of all of the text you've just read. And yeah, if you enjoyed the Knife ending you're in for a wild ride.

Mmmmmmmmmm. You don't realize how high your sentence simply ranked on my taste meter.

I had to edit it pretty severely too. Heh.

Spike Chunsoft did a poor job by calling this a spiritual successor early on. As I tell anybody with any interest in this game, everybody should just go play 999 first. XD

Brought 999 to the office today. Plan to make some progress on the second run at lunch.

Still wondering who
stabbed me
. I'm really seriously bothered by this!

If you were THAT impressed with the
Knife
ending, I can't even imagine your reaction to the other ones. The one you got is definitely the least impressive one.

The only character I really, really, REALLY want to turn out good is
June
. I'm really unnerved by the wording of the
Knife
ending, with the whole bit about
letting a wounded man stand before putting them out
. Something about the context has me on pins and needles that
June will turn out to be a traitor
. I think I'd be quite soured on the story if they did that to me. It would be like in Heavy Rain when (Heavy Rain spoilers)
a certain lovable character turned out to be the child killer
. I just really love the character
June
and would be crestfallen if
she
turned out bad. :(

I went back to the intro of 999 recently and I found the prose was a little weaker than I remembered, with some poorly worded sentences and awkward descriptions. My memory is fuzzy on this, but was that an issue throughout the whole game or just the opening? I hope not, I adored the experience the first time through :(

Still hyped for Virtue, of course.

Eh? What did you find poor about the wording in 999's intro? The first puzzle room and the developments immediately following it are very detailed, but economical -- it's setting up the scenario, piece by piece, and no piece is irrelevant.

I did encounter one typo somewhere in the game, though. "Lead," when it should've been "led," if I recall correctly. (Maybe it was the other way around.) But given the sheer volume of text in this game, I'd say that's a minor misstep. :)

Hmm, not sure. I just remember some instances of words repeating in subsequent sentences, along with a few descriptions struck me as awkwardly worded.

I'll go back to it again. Believe me, I loved 999 to bits the first time round; I've never wanted to be so wrong about something :P It's honestly probably the best story experience I've had with a game, alongside Katawa Shoujo (another visual novel! Fancy that).

On the path to the sub, and holy shit,
Junpei betrayed the others just so he could pass through Door 3 with June
. STONE-COLD. But it resulted in warm, cuddly moments with
June <3 <3 <3 (WHO BETTER NOT BE THE PERSON WHO STABBED ME LAST TIME!! )
. And going through
Door 3
, I had forgotten about
Snake's death
. Damn...

That post does a good job of outlining a few examples of 999's very problematic writing. People who are enjoying the game shouldn't read the post, as it might spoil both your enjoyment and certain scenes in the game.

There are other examples in the thread too.

I can't check out that post -- haven't seen all the endings yet -- but aside from a typo I've seen twice now where they say "lead" instead of "led," and aside from repeating a couple descriptors like "metal on metal," the narrative is rather eloquently written. It's not aiming for the purplest prose because it's serving as a means to an end, building a mental image of only the relevant details and reinforcing the bits the game wants you to remember for later.

When I played the game I recognized the mediocre writing, but I expected it. No offense to the translators, but I doubt they are necessarily the best story tellers. Often at times it read like an undergrad's short story for creative writing class. But they got the main points across, and then some. It certainly could have been much, much worse.

I loved it overall.

Only thing is, I found nothing wrong with any of the lines he specified. He compares one of the lines to something written in Twilight.....what? And of course most of those lines would sound awkward when taken out of context.

Now you see what I meant about going through that door?
It really was an amazing turn of events.
I'm curious to see how Lotus and Clover will react to Junpei when he inevitably crosses paths with them again.

OK, for real guys... Be ambiguous if you must... But... Can I trust...
June
?

LOL, this game must be doing something right with its characters for me to be this concerned!

:-\

It seriously ruins all the cute moments with that character, since I'm always wondering.

It'd be really cheap if that character turned out to be evil. :-\

Now, now. Isn't thinking in terms of plain "good" and "evil" oversimplifying things?

Yeah the writing really isn't that good. It's the experience of the game itself that makes it enjoyable - the multiple endings, the setting, the twists etc.

Amazon.co.uk are giving a November 16th release date for Virtue's Last Reward in the UK at the moment. 3DS version here.Vita version here.

While I'd have preferred it to have been the 1st week of November, this still works for me. Hope this release date stays (or gets brought forward!), getting hyped!

With these examples i disagree with the conclusion.

9,9,9 is built on what the players feels when reading but what matter the most that they nailed the writing seeing as it's supposed to give you clues and let work your imagination for the rest .

What does subtle means ? who would describe events like this in a subtle way ?This isn't sheakspear or an amazing writer ..the tone is clearly meant to be simple.

As for the unspecific part , i disagree as well . This is supposed to be unspecific because they have no way to mesure time properly . Or it just means that the reader doesn't need that clue.

I think that 9,9,9 writing isn't stellar but this post was just nitpicks

Playing 999 and just finished, by complete accident, the
torture chair puzzle with Lotus, where you check the left and right sides of the brain scan and toggle each quadrant up to three times to convert squares to arrows.
Can someone please explain to me how this puzzle works? Like what was the trick to it? I got desperate and randomly punched in a combination and hit Check and it worked. I don't like not knowing what was the correct way to go about it. I couldn't figure out how it worked. :-\

You need to light all the boxes up, and the trick is that every time you press a button the button on the top, left, right, and bottom all change to their opposite on/off positions. It's pretty easy and can be completed in about 3 steps. The easiest thing to do is to try and get all of the lights on the corners lit, and then go for the center.

I... I don't understand. :-\ There's no "top, left, right, and bottom," just a top and bottom on the left side of the brain, and a top and bottom of the right side...

If you could clarify further, that'd be great. I understand either way, though, and appreciate your answer. :)

In other news...

HOLY SHIT BISCUIT ON A TRISCUIT I JUST DID PLAYTHROUGH #2, SUB ENDING, AND HARGLE GARGLE WHAHAPPENED AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

MIND BLOWN ALL OVER THE WALL!

It's 1 a.m., the night is young, tell me quick-like, to start third playthrough with all of the data so far, do I pick Continue on the Main Menu, or Start with Memories??

So relieved to see June die, ironically -- at least she can't be the killer now!!

Also, I teared up. :-\

I think either/or works, though someone feel free to correct me.

Honestly, I never really understood that one either -.-
