When visiting game studios during our cover story visits, one constant refrain is developers citing the influence of Ico on their concept of game design. We've spoken with David Cage about it in the past, and Naughty Dog's game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann discussed the importance of Team Ico's work during our last cover story trip to the studio for The Last of Us. In the middle of our larger interview discussing the transition from The Last of Us to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, I spoke to Straley and Druckmann about what it was like to meet the creator of Ico Fumito Ueda and the influence of Resident Evil's creator Shinji Mikami.

There is a video in the article where Neil and Bruce talk about their meeting with Ueda and Mikami

Not surprised. Team Ico's games really are something special. An experience you can't really get in any other medium. I also consider the visual/aural experience right up there with stuff like studio Ghibli...They are 'spellbinding'...

Did he ask him about The Last Guardian though.

Come on Team ICO, you can't just make two of the greatest games ever and take this long for the third one ;__;

Team Ico are masters of fluke. If TLG is released it would not be solely because of Team ico even though it will have prob have their branding on it. I don't expect them to ever have a new game in development again and will be absorbed into SCEJ for good, if it has not already happened.

You don't fluke games like Ico and SotC

They're masterpieces.

U wot m8? Once is a fluke twice is not. Considering the 2 games they made weren't a sequel of each other says something about Ueda. He actually tries to make games instead of churn out annual sequels.

One does not simply create a masterpiece like ICO, a game that was very unique and has inspired countless amazing devs and then make another masterpiece like Shadow by fluke.

Team ICO are insanely talented. Its the exact reason why so many people are anticipating The Last Guardian.

I think you can tbh. The games are indeed beautiful but they already show the problems of team ico. Ico was delayed and missed its ps1 debut for ps2, the combat and escorting yorda can be a hit and miss many times, sotc has a number of techincal issues worst of all its frame rate. They carried all these problems with them into TLG wiithout any growth or maturity. They seem to be a dev that were in the right place and right time for those games. They are ill prepared for the challanges of modern game development and don't know how to work their way around problems. They tried to push ahead with an idea that sounded good on paper but they didn't know how to make it happen, and their perfectionism prevented them to change their focus so they continued head butting until Sony had to come in and get their WWS talent on board.

It's not a fluke if you've made two games that are considered the best of its generation.

Really.

Probably the greatest armchair analysis I've ever read. You should write a TLG postmortem book for those of us too shackled to concepts like reality and factual information.

team ico members have been working on other projects at sceja for a while now.

it isn't a standalone group. sceja staff members float from project to project.

any person who is currently working under mr. ueda's project is designated a member of "team ico," but it's not like you have the same group of guys working on the same game for the past 8 years.

even mr. ueda himself has drifted once in a while.

Maybe I'm just cranky, being a huge fan in the PS2 era and seeing they haven't released anything in the past 10 years hits home how the studio that went from such highs dropped to such lows. And its a bitter pill to swallow. I understand people under Team ico weren't doing anything and helped with other games I'm just saying I don't expect Team ico branding to ever be used again (if) after the TLG release, its tainted and doesn't hold the same weight anymore.
