PS VR Unboxings

The included demo disc is such a good idea on Sony's part.

Just wish the headset was cheaper. Can't justify buying PSVR the same year I'm probably going to buy a Pro, and probably just a couple months away from an NX too.

We asked Sony reps and they told us that the game didn't have the head tracking feature at the moment. Maybe after launch with some patch.

They were wrong. And you were wrong. And you didn't understand when actually playing it that of course it has head tracking. Which makes me think you may also have not understood what the Rep was actually telling you. Which makes me think you were double wrong.

I've played it twice. It--like every single other PSVR game in existence--has headtracking.

Anyone know how long the cable for the camera and the breakout box are? Due to the way my setup is laid out, I ideally need them in the opposite corner of the room to the actual PS4 console itself (projector). About 3.5 meters away...

The tasty looking charging stand the Kinda Funny crew have, does anyone know if that's coming out in the UK?

Had a quick look but couldn't find anything about it.

The cable from the processing unit to the headset is approx 16 foot but the HDMI and USB from the PS4 to the processing unit aren't that long. I'm guessing 3 foot.

I think there are extensions available for the camera's AUX cable, and the others are standard cables, but I don't think that any of them are going to work for a 3.5 metre run without some kind of powered repeater.

You're right. The PS Access crew played Battlezone and they mentioned head tracking was used to aim, if I'm not mistaken.

Anyone know how the image quality will be? When I used the Rift the experience was amazing however the image quality was somewhat grainy. Kind of like comparing a WiiU screen to that of a smartphones, it had the pixels but lacked total clarity.

Build quality looks amazing and I'm glad they let you use your own headphones seeing as most included ones won't be the best quality.

You are mistaken. Aiming uses the ds4 sticks. Head tracking is used to look around.

I cannot believe that a comment as obviously false as "Battlezone doesn't have head tracking" has got this much traction on a NeoGAF thread. Unbelievable.

*Long shot of someone with a blank expression on their face wearing a helmet*
*Helmet comes off, person not smiling, walks away*

These are...not informative or interesting.

That's not most of the videos so far lol. I've seen a bunch of smiles and good dumb grins.

Though we don't really hear anything from them, unless they happen to talk right away, so it's neat for seeing short reactions but not overly informative.

Graphics thanks to the PC might balance it out somewhat but the actual IQ on PSVR might actually be better due to the full RGB Oled and optics, which is unique to the PSVR, it's supposed to quite good at combating screen-door effect and graininess like being able to make out pixels.

Wow that helps a lot. Thanks for taking the time to pull this up for me, much appreciated! Makes me really wish I got to try it beforehand so I can compare the two.

People have not been realistic with their impressions. I've read everything from comparing the resolution to the 3DS to saying it's better than the Oculus.

If you cancel you'll always be the guy who was late to the VR party and you only get to enjoy it after a lot of people already had their first VR experience.

OMG there are actually people that think like this...?

Why am I surprised?

Is there any awareness amongst the general public about PS VR? I've never seen it being mentioned outside GAF, although my circles aren't really the most tech savvy.

You can't possibly be serious with this question

You cant be serious with that reply...
My wife doesnt want to know which porn o watch exactly of course but she is totally aware and fine with it. I mean every woman that does think her man isnt watching porn is beyond naive...

I just tried it. Resolution was fine. I could read a handwritten letter in Headmaster, so no big deal. Although I am a little suspicious it was on PS4 Pro, but the Sony reps insisted OG.

Pro is over a month away, nobody has gotten hands on with it save for at the reveal event

hehe! I think that guy is joking.
I've only seen the Taco Bell comercial.

I'm jumping between excitement, and being scared.
Still hoping I can find a copy of here they lie, and Drive Club VR.

Wait! Did they hide the ps4 unit? Didn't know the Pro was being shown at stores.

You use the analog sticks to aim and move but looking around is essential to the experience. You'll be looking up and over your shoulder very quickly as flying drones swarm overhead. Lots physical scanning of the area you can do when in VR, even as you're shooting in another direction. It feels great.

There may be another mode where you aim via head tracking, and that would be very interesting since the game feels balanced to aim with the sticks, but it's the way I mentioned it for the Best Buy demos at least.

I hope you guys like it and it sells well but i am really worried this 1rst gen "Chair-VR" is going to damage VR moving forward.

To explain myself, the only reason VR survives is if it provides experiences that cannot be had on a tradition screen. Why? Well that is because playing traditional games on a 2d screen is an objectively better method than the same experience in VR.

For example, playing something like uncharted 4 in vr is a novelty, not a platform, and that novelty wears off fast. I own a Vive and can attest to how fast playing traditional games in VR gets annoying. Its easier and more comfortable to play then on a tv.

VR can provide experiences that are completely unique to the platform though (Budget Cuts, Onward, Call of Starseed, Rec Room, Raw Data, etc), and it is these experiences that justify the devices in the minds of early adopters.

My fear is that Sony, in their haste, has jumped into VR with a version that plays to VRs weakness, not strength. PSVR will reach a lot more people than it's bigger brothers but will do so in a half assed package. The novelty of non room scale, non cockpit, games likely will wear off really quick, and in the minds of the mainstream VR will be a bust. Thus destroying the industry before it can grow.

Tldr: PSVR is the weakest of the three VR headsets (no roomscale), but will get the most visibility. If it fails it might doom the great roomscale headsets, and VRs future, due to Sony's bad decisions.

Bit LTTP in replying to this thanks to a 7 day ban, but as I don't see any mention of Samsung or Google Glass here, so this just comes over as PCVR fanboyism IMO...

Please, someone settle this for me. I already have a Rift. I rarely use it now. I have PSVR on preorder for the first wave. Is there a huge reason to keep this if the wow factor has already worn off for me? Why shouldn't I pass on this and cancel my order?

Incredibly Naive
People have not been realistic with their impressions. I've read everything from comparing the resolution to the 3DS to saying it's better than the Oculus.

"Some" people haven't. The majority I've read lineup with exactly what I've thought and heard. Somebody a few posts above mentioned he could read a handwritten note in game or w.e. there's no doubt you can read words and whatnot, but the image is very soft/washed out. It's something I'm sure you adapt to. The longest demo I got to try was thumper for about a half hour straight and I completely forgot about the screen.

That being said I'm sure it won't be great for browsing the web and whatnot.

You want us to answer that for you? I guess it all depends on whether any launch titles really grab you.

Here's a huge list of the titles that will be available on PSVR over the next 6 months

Maybe have a look-see and decide? Or wait until 5th October when the kit review embargo ends and the gaming press is awash with articles, reviews, gushing praise, biting cynicism and the usual gamut of views in between.

Are there such a thing as high-quality sounding ear-buds? My head does not like headphones, I've bought several and it is just a no go in the comfort department. Ear-buds are great, but they don't exactly deliver rich audio, at least not the ones I've had. Even if they're expensive, if they actually exist I may have to buy some for VR.

When you say 'rich audio' what do you mean? Top-end Sennheiser & Bose earbuds are pretty decent but very pricey, but mainly earbuds are for convenience listening when out & about, not audiophile level reproduction.

How long are the cables from the headset? Will I be able to sit across the room on a couch? The recommended a pretty big room area, but those cables seem short
The cable length from the headset to the breakout box is 5 meters (16 feet), I think.

That was just some idiot at Polygon who can't do math. The thread on it was hysterical.
