PS VR Unboxings

I don't think you need to go on much of a hunt for that answer. People see new tech, they get excited about said new tech, and they pre-order. Heck, I pre-ordered (and then cancelled) both launch SKU's at Amazon just because there really isn't any downside to doing so. Also, when it comes to games you really made the point already. There appear to be some cool experiences at launch for PSVR, but no one knows yet how well those will really hold up once you can play them at home.

I'm happy for anyone who's picking this up at launch, but I don't think those who cancelled their pre-orders are crazy for doing so either.

I've been going back and forth because I've preordered a Pro (I'm a sucker), but ... I have to say I'm leaning toward keeping PSVR with all of the cool games I'm seeing for it. I realize that at launch you're basically looking at apps and demos; but that's pretty much what I have time for mostly, anyway.

What is GAF's impression of the public buzz? Do you think it will sell out and be hard to find?

I have PSVR on preorder with Game but not the first allocation. I'm still a bit hesitant as I've heard mixed options about the resolution, some even commenting it's similar to 3DS!!

I'm still letting myself get carried away with what is being shown on the TV feed is the same as what the headset is putting out. I know the headset has a lot more work to do but was wondering..... on a scale of 1 to 10 how close are the graphics to each other?

Well, what is being shown on the TV typically will be what the headset is putting out, but you are so, so much closer to the image and you will notice it. The games fundamentally look good but the image quality, due to the resolution and how close you are to it, is poor. For what it's worth, this is an issue across the board with VR at this stage, but PSVR is affected somewhat worse than the Oculus Rift or Vive.

I've only tried two PSVR games, Driveclub and Tethered, and in both cases the image quality wasn't great, but the advantages of VR still shine through, to me at least. At the same time, it's pretty obvious that VR headsets are going to have to increase their resolution considerably before they can provide IQ that is similar quality to today's games on a typical modern TV.

I have a question. I already have the 1st iteration ps4 camera so I wouldn't need to purchase this v2 camera correct? I was looking at just purchasing the standard vr, and not the camera/move bundle. Thanks

They are the same, it's just a different look for the updated product catalogue.

I'm super stoked for PSVR, and I got to try it two weeks ago (Superhypecube and Eve: Valkryie were fun AF), but I definitely have a problem with the low-res screen. It's a jarring difference from the Vive and Occulus. Playing Rez Infinite with a Vive or Occulus would be downright heavenly.

I know it may sound simplistic, but including a demo disk with a bunch of games is such a smart move for a novelty item like this. With the expense of this unit, I would expect people maybe buying 1 VR game with the unit, but once people get home and play the demo disk, I think you will be seeing people going out at getting a few more. Looking forward to trying this out, but really think that demo disk is going to pay dividends big time.

In addition, I think for a device like this, it would wise for Sony and 3rd parties to have demo's for all upcoming games. The VR experience can and does vary from title to title, having a demo is something that should happen for most if not all VR games.

Which stores didn't take preorders? I have that day off and want to know where to line up.

Wow, looks like pretty mild hype judging from the viewcounts. Did we ever figure out if the Rift/Vive sales flatline was real? Don't know if we have any official sales data but I guess we will with Playstation.

What about the higher frame rate? Was that noticable, or nah?

Frame rate for both titles were incredibly smooth, but both looked kinda blurry and you could definitely see pixels. Jarring experience watching the PSVR experience from a nice 1080P television to actually wearing the headset.

in regards to resolution and image quality this is what I took away from it.

first time I tried it I noticed it but was engrossed by the VR experience so it faded to the background and I did not give it much mind.

I was lucky enough to try it a few times now and well....its bad.

After trying a few times I assume the VR initial wow effect is gone for me. Its still very very cool but now I can take it all in as a whole. The image quality is very pixilated and quite poor, it looks nothing like the breakaway box is displaying on screen. I have cancelled my pre order for now but maybe in the future ill get one. I think initially people will LOVE it but buyers remorse will be quite quick with this product. I admire sony for taking a risk and investing in it and quite honestly releasing a quality product but its just not ready yet. The cost of ownership, the cumbersome jumble of wires and cables and lack of good media is what will cause the general public to not invest at all.

we have become VERY spoiled with image quality and displays in every single device we own. This is taking a very very big step back and I do not think anyone is willing to accept it for the long term.

Interestingly, we have people coming in almost every weekend for repeat usage of the psvr demos, and it's virtually none of the commentary that you're saying.

I think it also depends on how constantly you're using it. Trying to replace you're usual gaming habits with vr could be extremely jarring, but mixing them to allow for those different experiences keeps things from being too much of one way or another.

But you might be more sensitive to the it, and who knows, maybe the pro benefits might improve your experiences. I'm getting both, regardless.

I hear ya, and I never said these comments out loud to the reps either, rather I thanked them for the demo and talked about how cool the VR immersion is. It's not really a time or place to spread negativity.

Yes, I am quite sensitive and invest quite heavily in audio and visual tech so that is quite high on my importance list.

I know vr is ment to be enjoyed in short bursts. This further complicates the current VR devices, very high cost of entry with low return.

Many people wait years or for major sales to buy consoles, a device they can use daily, for a variety of things for numerous years. VR is an accessory requiring additional software and a very high acceptance cost.

This is going to be one of those releases where units will be available for all of fifteen minutes before going out of stock.

Also, the concern in this thread is over 9000. 3DS? Google Cardboard? Come on, guys.

Why wouldn't I do that? Why would you need to know why I would do that? What's going on?
You implied you may buy one; In the future there's no charge and hence no downside to keeping your preorder until last minute, whereas you may regret canceling it. If there's anything limited supply you may possibly want just preorder on Amazon - they charge when they ship - and use the time to decide. My ps4 was bought this way and canceled last minute when I got one locally for midnight pickup.

I just want to know how the visual quality and performance compares to my Gear VR.

If Zen Pinball and The Stern Pinball Arcade come to PSVR and have flawless performance, I'm in. The Gear VR version of Stern Pinball Arcade has shitty framerate problems and frequent slowdown.

Yeah, it's about the same image quality as a really clean looking 3DS game from a normal viewing distance (about 16 inches away).

Same smoothness to my eyes when no frames are dropped (locked 60fps). Image quality is a wash, but the PSVR had less SDE

Shipping only. Didn't have a store pickup option. Forgot to mention Target.com

It says in-store only. :(

It is significantly better than Gear VR.

What? PSVR unboxings are making people cancel ... ?

I wonder how many are canceling because they are considering getting Pro instead.
It's weird to see Gaf not hyped about new gaming technology.
Maybe it's the Vita that burned people. The problem if people don't buy PSVR it won't get software support.

I just find it weird people pre-ordered based on reports and vids but now they're cancelling based on unboxings. Don't you find that odd? I can't remember but did the PSVR pre-orders go out before we knew if the PS4pro was launching this year? If so then you could be right.

PSVR first pre-orders were immediately after GDC in March. The first Neo rumors were also immediately after GDC in which Kotaku heard it from developers at the conference.

Don't think the unboxing has anything to do with it. It's just that the release is imminent and people aren't sure if they really want it right now. I remember when I got Gear VR, my interest lasted a week before it got shelved. Then I got a Rift which I returned after a few days of use. VR is something you have to experience to know if it's for you. I think if you have the money to spare, keeping your preorder and trying it out for a few days might be a good idea. You have a demo disc of 18 titles. Use that before you buy any VR accessory or game. Don't like it, then return it.

Not getting why they went with white. It should be black just like all the accessories and the PS4.

Try the app. Still showing available

From the search page there was a button to pre-order now but when I went to the product page it said in-store only. I went back to the search page and clicked directly on the pre-order now button and got a pre-order in.

So can we expect some reviews soon? I am guessing they got these units from Sony for review?

Review embargo for hardware and game reviews lift on October 5. Expect a ton of coverage then.

We're asking what we can and cannot post in terms of the hardware, games, etc. But impressions are locked in on October 5.
