From the OXM info:

-Bullet shields. big metal shield that stops you from getting hit. can be planted into the ground to make a new cover. enemies can kick it down though if they get close enough.

So if its mentioned on 1up, guess the OXM stuff is real.

Seriously, all that new stuff is freaking crazy. I would say GOTY hands down, but it does have competition, MGS4. A few of my friends still play Gears, I can't imagine how long they'll be playing Gears 2 with all this stuff. If they thought Gears 1 MP was good, wow... they are in for it :lol

I've read some UK'ers around the web confirming that the info is real, plus like some of you said, CliffyB squashed the other BS post, so the OXM/X360 mag stuff has to be real!

And with that, Gears 2 is on lock for my Multiplayer/Shooter GOTY 2008 hands-down with at a bullet, and will battle with Ninja Gaiden II for my overall GOTY 2008...

What a year 2008 shall be! :D

Not sure if I like some of the new features in the OXM UK. Specifically the smoke grenade/ragdoll crap, the grenade/proxy mine stuff (brings back memories of annoying campers in cod4), and the weapons cycling around the maps (this takes out much of the strategy prevalant in the original Gears).

Otherwise everything else sounds great. Looking forward to "Guardian", the ability to choose between the hammerburst and lancer at the start of a round, uploading screenshots (now if we could only get a saved film system), and just about everything else on that list. Stopping power also sounds pretty good. No longer can players make a mad dash at an enemy and expect to rush past lancer fire for an insta-gib thunder roll. Gears 2 will definitely play a lot different than the original.

Here's are a couple more tidbits/more specific information from the article:


Assasination is now called Guardian. This time around, normal characters keep respawning unless the leader is killed. Once the leader is killed, the other team members become "vulnerable" ie they will die and not come back.

Wingman is a 2 v 2 v 2 v 2 v 2 mode.

Carmine and Raam are confirmed for multiplayer.

Matchmaking/party mode is confirmedd

On downed enemies: X = curbstomp. Y = beatdown. A = meat shield.

The weapon-specific melee kill on a downed opponent for the sniper is to throw the rifle in the air, catch it by the barrel and take a happy gilmore-style swing at the opponent's head.

Meat flag mode is basically capture the flag. There is a npc character in the map who will attack whoever get close. If you can down him you can meat shield him and attempt to escort him back to your base. If the npc gets shot enough he'll break out of the animation and go nuts on the person trying to capture him.

2 people can chainsaw the same enemy. Sweet.

When you take cover you are completely hidden, ie you cant be sniped whilst hiding behind cover.

You can use a mobile cover-shield like Halo 3's bubble shield. Approaching enemies can kick it over.

Ok, misunderstood the op of the GT thread. I never heard of x360 mag, but apparently that's what he was talking about, I thought he was talking about OXM UK after seeing the cover for that, but he wasn't - it's X360 Mag. More info - http://www.360magazine.co.uk/aboutthemag_x360.html

I'm with you. I think it'll end up being my GOTY. And I do still play Gears online from time to time too. Still a fresh experience, and still awesome.

Same here - I'm still on it on a regular basis alongside Halo 3 and GTAIV single player, and for the past 3 days my local friends caught the Gears fever again and started playing again too...

I'm in the same boat as you in regards to GOTY 2008 as well - it mainly comes down to this and Ninja Gaiden II for overall GOTY, but based on this info alone, it's an easy MP/shooter GOTY for me, easily...

If I'm lucky, this mag might hit the stands by me next week, the latest the week after, so I'll definitely be on the lookout for it and all other Gears 2 mags...

Saw that too. Some of the new locust variants look pretty sweet as well. Love the new helmets and such. I wonder if they'll make it into multiplayer this time around.

I'm a bit concerned with weapon cycle.

Gears maps have a very unique balance concerning the placement of weapon spawns. If you randomize those things will be awkward at best.

It seems like a strange choice. There are benefits as well though. Currently, there's an obvious flow to matches that is generally the same across all matches. Go for power weapon 'x' and then use strategy 'y'. If there isn't a guarantee on what weapon will be available at each spot, it could cause some interesting shake-ups to the status quo.

So long as its "smart" randomization and maps don't suddenly contain certain power weapons without their balancing counters, or multiples of the same weapon in close proximity, I hope the potential negatives to this idea won't be too overwhelming.

edit: guess I'll just see you in Gears for a while, Full Recovery, unless you edit that quickly :p

Being made aware of where scans are available defeats the purpose of banning them on NeoGAF. Its the same as requesting illegal what-have-you through private messages.
