Looks fine with some tinkering. I'd be pleased of it looked at least like that. Long live the DualShock.

Wouldn't mind if that grille represented the microphone and we could plug any headphones we wanted to into the port on the bottom.

Yep, using the Vita dpad shows you how bad the PS3 dpad is. Can't wait for that to be their new standard.

The Dpad looks fantastic but the shape of the controller and sticks need to be more Dual Shock and less Xbox.

I don't know what to think honestly. It seems so strange, but alluring at the same time. Guess I'll just have to wait until it's in my hands to decide what I think.

I like it, but they need to work on the top design. As thick as this thing looks, it better have some good rumble added to it.

No Share button upsets me but I guess that could be tied in somewhere...like the touchpad or PS button.
Everything else looks great for a prototype.

I just hope the touchpad actually gets used. I could see it being way more useful than the Sixaxis but I could also see developers not use it properly, then it eventually getting all but phased out.

An industry source familiar with the new system tells us the photo is the real deal. But bear in mind, it may not represent the final form of the controller. Curiously, it seems to not include a "Share" button, despite that button being described in official Orbis documentation that was shared with us a few weeks ago. I've contacted Sony to see if this is real, and will update if I hear back.

And they hope for an official answer...?

It's responsive and clicky, not mushy and too tough like the DS3 one. Best d-pad I've used.

I wonder what the triggers are like.

Really hoping that it's a touchscreen and not a pad. A screen would actually have some minor uses that could benefit gameplay.

I hope (and expect) it to be primarily used for UI stuff (which it should be very good at), and not in action games.

I know the controller is clearly a prototype, but I... actually kind of like it. It seems very functional without anything superfluous. Sure this is mostly down to it being a devkit prototype so functionality is top priority - but I think it looks like it would be comfortable.

Looks like the blue light is a sort of PSMove style indicator.

There seems to be a headphone jack in the bottom which would be used if you don't want to use what looks like a speaker, or could also plug in wired headsets a la the 360.

I'm glad the sticks are symmetrical still. My hands are, so why shouldn't the sticks be? You get a much better range of motion with a lower stick, due to the fact you don't have to raise your thumb up an extra couple centimetres, which is a couple centimetres lost. They seem to have reached a good compromise for both parties that like concave and convex sticks. Vita style D-Pad is good too, hope that stays past the prototype.

Looks like start and select remain, sitting either side of the touch pad. Which I'm interested to see it's implementation. The few times I played the WiiU (don't own one, still no games grabbed me yet) - I found myself never looking at the screen unless I really have to. So a touch pad seems more logical - you can input the same gestures without taking your eyes off what's happening.

It also looks like it's a little bigger and more rounded which has been a big complaint for a lot of people.

So yeah, I quite like it so far. Sure it could do with some dolling up, and I totally see the Mad Catz thing - but it seems like a really solid controller without any bullshit with everything seeming like useful and sensible additions.

Unless Sony is hoping to create a new genre where we are sexually stimulating things during our games, I have no idea what a touch pad like that would be used for.

Is it really that bulky though? If you look, you can only see the actual thickness from the top. It could very well be just real estate for the (rumored) improved trigger set, just hanging over to form a ledge...like the one on the back of the WiiU pad. The rest of the controller is probably regular size. That would be awesome...
