Now those shots of graffiti murals is the kind of stuff I want to see, more shit like that. That wooden door is really nice too.

Not really. They just look like photographs glued on, there's no depth.
Looks 3D to me

Yes but these textures aren't exactly on par with what's done on PC.

There are more to good texture than ultra high res generic, over contrasted, over saturated, over sharpened textures.
For example, there may be PC racing games with higher resolution sampled road textures than GT5, but none of them come to the detail & authenticity of the gravel textured in GT5

Personally, I also think Witcher 2 is one of the most overrated games in looks across the board, textures included.

I honestly think yours is the best texture mod I've seen.

It's such a shame that I never could get it to actually work, as my Crysis 2 crashes whenever I try to go into the SP vanilla campaign. The little mod stages, like the benchmark (or at least I think they're not vanilla) or the Times Square level work, but the game itself doesn't. Instacrash :(

Same here.

CARS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>GT5

As far as the graphics are concerned.

Thanks for those incredible shots sethos, you deliver as always.

Holy smokes. How many cars come with Project Cars?
100 IIRC.

I'd say 60-ish is much more likely; there are around 30 playable at the moment after ~1.5 years of development and around year to go and maybe 30 more licensed, but not started (not necessarily going to be included in the release). They are a relatively small studio after all and working with a budget less than 1/10 of it's bigger comptetitors.

Anyhow, my vote would go to modded Stalkers, Metro 2033, modded Crysis 2 and Witcher (Hate the sharpening filter, but they still look stunning without it).

Jesus, the Racing stripe looks great, but the actual road texture looks awful.
Generic assets just high res'd to hell.

Game is still in development mind you and these shots are from last year, ancient builds.

But still funny you want to put down CARS when you're the one that posted that low-res GT5 crap.

Not sure if serious....

That shoud do anyway, if each of the cars are that detailed.

Another thing I want to mention again on there being more to good looking textures than having the highest resolution possible.

While the side textures are high res in those Project CARS screens, they looks off.
That red & white rumble strip texture looks like something from a Stalker, Half-Life or Metro game & not how they look like in actual race tracks.

The exact same thing can be said about those GT5 shots. We know you have a strong anti PC agenda but still. ;)

GT5 looks very good make no mistake but I don't think it's in the same league as CARS graphics wise. The attention to detail in this game is just ridiculous and I'm not merely talking about texture resolution.

GT5 premium cars are 2nd to none. It's enviroment around it that is disappointing . I do like the weather variety in gt5

The Witcher 2's artists put so much care into every little piece of leather, its just beautiful. The overall work done on outfits is so ahead of the curve for WRPGs.

Another game with great textures is God of War III, sadly I can't find good screenshots showcasing that. :(

I was impressed by how good it looks back in 2010.

I can't find any screens that do them justice, but the road textures in the (new) NFS: Hot Pursuit and even more so the new NFS: Most Wanted look incredible. Especially when rain/lightning is present.

That's your opinion, and I disagree. Having played CARS and GT5 I think the former is on another level when it comes to cars models. I genuinely don't think GT5 comes close in that regard.

I am not disagreeing with you. In motion ,in game you are correct. in my head I was comparing gt5 photo mode pics.

Also, I haven't played CARS , hence probably can't appreciate like you can.

Kazunori Yamauchi: “We had maybe 300 polygons in a car in the first game. Now we have about 500,000 polygons in each car.

Project CARS
We're working to roughly 200,000 polygons for the top LOD exteriors and an additional 50K for the cockpits

Yet I still think CARS is more impressive both in motion and in screenshot. But that's just my opinion, I never pretended it's a fact.

Okay then.

Digital Foundry pixel pusher
Picked up DMC4 for 2.70 on gmg ad was shocked by how good some of the textures are for an older game. Say what you like about capcom but the MT framework engine is amazing

What's more amazing is that the game operates at 60 fps on consoles at 1280x720 with those same textures you see there.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I actually think the original textures are better because they don't suffer from oversharpening. I don't understand why gamers want extreme sharpness and detail whereas movie fans who want the best visual fidelity turn the sharpness level on their tv's as low as possible.

It doesn't make a game look more realistic, on the contrary. This is just as bad as those old Unreal games where every surface was made of plastic, extreme bloom, piss filters, etc.

High res textures are not the same thing as over-sharpened textures. Similarly having textures with high resolution detail is very different than turning up the sharpness on your TV which is artificial sharpening and leads to artifacting that isn't there in the actual image. If a movie has super sharp cinematography then any movie buff will want to see that detail, they just don't want to ruin it with artificial sharpening.

It seems like polygon numbers per car already hit the point of diminishing returns a long time ago. It's the least important thing now compared with textures, lighting, shaders, and even good anti-aliaisng to contain all the shimmering that will no doubt result from such a lot of fine detail.

The above links are dick waving, plain and simple.

Back in the day the textures in the original Phantasy Star Online blew me away on Dreamcast:
