Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.

These isn't my screen, but Hitman Absolution on PC has some impressive textures:

Also if mods count Doom 3 Wolfen texture pack is fantastic:

I find PC shots showing good texture work kind of boring.
Its expected that PC games these days will have awesome textures.

Finding great console shots is much more interesting.

It hasn't been that long since it's release, but man Mirror's Edge has aged so nicely. Game still looks beautiful. Simplistic, but nice.

I disagree, more PC shots please.

Whether it is expected or not does not matter, the result is splendid, wow at those Doom 3 sikkmod screenshots. O_O.

ITT: People are still impressed by slimy normal and parallax mapping even thought the textures themselves are monotonous single coloured copy-paste crap.

what? do you expect brick walls to come in blue? cmon now, they're good textures. I'm not really sure what you're looking for here.

Vampire: Bloodlines had some nice stand-out textures in the form of paintings for its time:

Although that isn't that remarkable, seeing how it's simply a normal map.[/QUOTE]

That's not a normal map :P That's just a regular diffuse map. Normal map = bump map.

Hand painted, varied or otherwise creative textures instead of monotonic repeating simple squares.

I mean people post this image as an example of great textures, when imo it's quite the bottom of the barrel material. Just one stone repeated to infinity.

You are entitled to your opinion. :)

Yes but these textures aren't exactly on par with what's done on PC.

Yeah I can take a 10k resolution photo of a wall, lay wrap it out on a cube in unity, and voila you have a texture that's better than anything you see in Crysis 2 by some peoples standards.

Needless to say it's still probably a bad game texture. There's so much more to texturing than resolution yo.

Now these "simple" textures are interesting to look at!

Those ME character models are among the best of the whole generation, even in vanilla state

And those modded Doom 3 screenshots are pretty incredible as well. I said DAYUM

The A-10 Digital Combat Simulator for PC has some ridiculous cockpit textures.

And you can just keep zooming in and in
Dead or Alive 5 has great facial textures IMO. As good as anything Ive seen on a console.
I guess the faces use a heap of the consoles resources , as some of the backgrounds look comparatively terrible.

GTAIII was mind blowing. You could zoom in on a piece of paper flying on the street and see writing on it.

Same kind of small detail could be found in MGS2 everywhere. Hi-res posters of girls, data text on bottles, trash, equipment, you had detailed casings flying from weapons...

My favourite thing about the MGS series texture work is not so much the quality of the textures, as that tends to be pretty varied (even Ground Zeroes looks rough in raw texture detail), but the huge variety of texture assets and the attention to detail in appropriate texture use. The team will go out of their way to put a unique texture somewhere that is unique, just to make the scene appear more authentic.

Like in Ground Zeroes how every soldier in a squad has a different number attached to their helmet.

Indeed. Some general texture groups were pretty low res, but they went out their way to make the game world the most varied and detailed it could be. Snake Eater took it one step further. I have never seen anything like it since on consoler or PC.
