Very limited Japanese here... starting a playthrough of the game and was wondering if there are any good translation guides/FAQs online anywhere? I'll be playing the game once it releases in english as well, of course!

There is also the google translate app that you can take pictures and translate the text on them. Its laborious... but if you really wanna know whats going on in a scene, it can give you a decent idea

I gave up on that one after looking up a guide. The thing about this quest is that all the solutions are
based on puns.
It's not that the Steel Sword isn't sharp, it's that it "doesn't have a blade (はがね = はがねぇ = 刃がない), so it can't cut through stuff."
Wow, so that's what it was?I wanna hit my head on the wall right now....
I wonder though how they'll translate that into english in order for this to work xD.

Beat final boss and only realized afterwards that it'd probably go down a lot faster if I used the Camus' skill points (shouldn't have saved up for those passive Zone skills) and added the Thanatos Hunt (sp?) skill.

And now to go almost completely OCD with completing in-game stuffs.

Yooo when the heck do you get access to
100 coin slots
in the first casino? I got 4500 from the 10 coin machine thanks to a 20 metal run but I can't expect to get a huge amount from the 10 coin machine.

I do casino stuff for my husband because I tend to have much better luck than him at it.

I've had pretty good luck with the Metal King Strongs. Killed four and got my party up to the high 60s/low 70s. I don't think I can stand doing this long enough to get my party to 99 though, just those four took about 45 minutes and was really boring. Maybe eventually someone will figure out the more efficient method and I'll come back to try it. Platinum dream ruined. :/

Gonna just finish up whatever I have left to do, get/make some of the ultimate equipment I'm missing, and finish the game...so I can then focus on playing it all over again on the 3DS.

I've got both the 2D and 3D versions up to the halfway point now. It's funny how much lower my 2D version file's game clock is. Definitely the preferred choice for a brisk playthrough.

I only killed one, though I did it with the Spectacle Show+Super Roulette method and went from level 70 to level 74 in one battle and that was enough for me. I'm guessing you probably won't need to be higher than that to finish everything else in the game

Only one member of my party was cracking 70 and I did everything in the game.

Hmmm...I'm pretty good at walking away from platinums when I stop enjoying doing the things trophies ask for but this being DQXI might pull me towards doing it if I get the PS4 version...that tension is something to consider...

Don't think I could do it though. Especially with metals not running around on the field as it sounds like from the posts in here.

...

I know I ask this question a lot and sorry if a) I'm being annoying and b) I missed some recent thoughts on the matter, but how do people feel about the vignette quality in this game?

It seems people are thinking it is a "better DQVIII," as a first pass. I'm taking that to mean it has a strong focus on the central story and cast like VIII and that that story and cast are striking people as better than those in VIII on a whole.

I'm curious as to how it compares to where I thought DQVIII was weaker than, say, DQVII, that is to the vignettes. My take on DQVIII is that it shines in certain central vignettes tied to character arcs of the central cast--Things like the initial Angelo story and the whole situation of that abbey and the templars--but that the quality of vignettes outside of those core stories was weaker than I'd like and weaker than you find in DQVII.

Tbh I really like it when DQ does a good job with non-cast characters and their stories because I enjoy the 'unconventional' shapes they can take. I'm talking about the kinds of tragedies, deaths, romances, etc. that are easier to fit on to an NPC and the distance at which and the level of completion to which they can be told. (I feel, say, DQIV was able to do this sort of thing with the central cast thanks to its core narrative conceit and V did it with the main character himself and his family through its "life story" conceit--so doesn't have to be about other characters but I think that distance can help).

Do people think DQXI a step up from VIII in this regard?

I won 12000 or so at poker today. That was fun.

I'm still not that far. 16 hours played, going slowly. Died on a Streetpass Scenario (Dragon Quest
VII
), and am now thinking about doing the story more where I think I may get the last character?

No real strong emotions on the game right now. I enjoy all the throwbacks. I'm playing mainly in 2D, but wanted to see some cutscenes in 3D and it's amazing how much more expressive they are. I like 2D, but it kind of feels like I'm missing so much.

You are. I really like 2D mode but it's more of a curio than a way to experience the game for the first time.

I wonder if dq11 will get any dlc/post launch support.
Probably not though x_X, probably most are just on the switch version now and then it's next project time likely.

Linkura - It comes later in the game.

When exactly? Spoilers are ok.

Ended up winning 66k total tokens last night plus 500 for the recipe book. With 10 coin slots. And maybe an hour at most. I was shocked that if you are in metal mode and get free spins, your metal mode count doesn't go down until you're out of free spins AND you stay in metal mode. Cheap as fuck.

Going to play more today while hubs is at work and hopefully get him enough for whatever he wants at the current casino.

Update: up to 108k now. Can only imagine the winnings I'd have with 100 coin slots. :(

Is it worth spending time at the casino when the 100 coin poker table first opens up or is it better to wait until roulette is available?

Aeana

By the time roulette is available, most of the stuff available to buy when you first reach the casino will be outdated and worthless.

I've put about 80 hours into this game and am a ways into the post-game and haven't seen a single Metal King Slime. Where should I start looking? I keep telling my son I'll show him one and I don't want to end up being a horrible, liar of a father. xD

They appear on the final dungeon, but only in battle alongside other monsters.

Oh, okay. Weird! Is it a "tough" version of a MKS, or is it just a normal one? Does it pay out more than the tough versions of the liquid metal slimes or is it just the old school 30k-ish? Thanks for the assist!

Also regarding the final dungeon --
is that the hero trial stuff I'm doing or do I have more to look forward to?

Second part of the game in the arena town spoilies ahead.

Oh boy, I thought I was doing so well at the second casino only to realize
it's rigged for story reasons!
. It was a real war of attrition against
King Boogie.
He beat me though. I'll get him next time need more MP items.

Both appear there and MKS give way more experience than before.

By the final dungeon I mean the last dungeon before you see the credits for the first time, so you already passed through it.

I found regular metal kings to appear alongside the yellow flying monsters more often than not, while the strong metal kings did alongside strong hades knights.

Got 186k tokens for my husband. With 10 coin slots. He got one of each of the Plat Sword, Lightning Spear, Mercury Bandanna, White Shield, and recipe book with the winnings. Would love for someone to answer my question about when 100 coin slots will be available. :( Is it really far away? But we should definitely be good for now.

Hey all, post-credits.

Quick question. I know I don't have to grind, but I love grinding when I'm watching tv etc. For some reason it's just relaxing.

What are the best places to grind for that sweet exp in the post-credits content?

If you progress the main story, you can grind very effectively in the
second trial (Strong Metal Hands, pop up in the cave with the rocks/birds in the Forest part)
or
third trial (Strong King Slimes, very low pop rate, crazy xp)
.
From what I understand, if the average level of your party is 70, you can summon a bunch of monsters which will give you 540k xp if you use the Roulette renkei beforehand. That's enough for 4-5 levels, even in the 90s.

Similar to previous games, once you get to a certain level there's some experience cap, meaning you'll always level up after getting certain experience, it no longer escalates.

I don't think I explained myself properly, but in VIII once you reach level 50 in order go go any level up you need 100k of experience, so going to level 52 to 53 takes the same as 92-93.

XI works the same from what I could tell, I think the cap here is 150k though.

I'm starting to give up on my dream of the plat trophy. I've maxed all levels, completed all of Nelson's trials, monk trials (save for all stage 4/5 rewards), and true ending, yet struggling with the effort involved in completing the dress-up sets. Ugghhh.

When I was done with the game and checked to see how hard it would actually be to get this trophy, I came across this guide (spoilers!), which lists all the costumes and where you get the recipes/costumes themselves. That said, I guess getting ingredients is the worst part of the process.

Some questions for folks about the post game! What level was your party when you finished?

Did you do
the new subquests that appear (like Sylvia's etc etc) before or after doing the trials?

Just trying to get an idea of what I should be doing first/what I should be prioritizing.

Also Hasemomomo-chan, what's the roulette renkei?

For the first part of your question,
I left the trials for the end and thought that it was a bad idea in the end. The 2nd and 3rd trial are great for grinding xp and the rewards make other sidequests easier.

For the second part of your question,
this guide explains how to use the combinations of the 2 renkeis (spectacle show/roulette) to get mad xp. It's nothing mindblowing and also very easy to do, especially if you have at least 1 item which puts your entire party in the zone and at least one which does that for a single party member (you can get the latter from the
Samadi prince's quest
). If you use the roulette, you'll get at least one of those "all party in the zone" items back as a guaranteed drop, so you're not losing anything.

I wasn't able to beat the first trial until I did a few of the other side things first. Tried again around 54-55 and breezed through the trial 1 boss. I recommend going in and looting though, lots of good stuff to find before the boss itself. The various side events differ a lot in difficulty, so if you fail at one, just move on to another one and come back later.
It's a weird structure but there is a ramp to it.

As for level when I finished,
My party was 68 on average when I finally went to challenge the last boss

Completed the book(all items, all star crafted, all monsters) man that was a shit ton of crafting. I think there is nothing else to do anymore aside from some weird secret titles + some farming ones I won't bother with (like I assume there is a 1000 field attack one? not sure). Sad to say goodbye to the game since all that's left to do is kill the postgame boss again or aimlessly travel through the world.
Personal 2017 goty material.

As for the last boss and levels, from what I've seen in this thread, if you have the best equipment it should be doable on the levels Aeana was, but if you're like me and you don't get the last 1~2 tiers of items, even level 90~ (in my case 99) definitely doesn't make that fight a cakewalk.
I've heard that giving everyone a
スーパーリング+3
definitely makes the whole postgame much, much easier though.

Yes, you really want to get protection against paralysis and confusion to do well in the post game. And use the heck out of Senya's キラキラポーン.

I prefer everything but cut scenes I think in 2D. World map, dungeon design and town design are much better. I also prefer random battles. I just whizzed through a dungeon with only fighting 3 enemies in 3D mode, and I would usually have to fight a lot more. I don't want to have to consciously run into enemies in order to feel properly leveled.

I have switched to 3D though. I'll do a second play in 2D (well, do in 3D up until where I switched).

Well, once you get access to the medal academy, there's a cutscene viewer there that lets you view all of the story sequences you've seen so far in both 2D and 3D mode. I just think a lot of impact is missing in 2D mode. I don't think they put as much effort into it as a fully-blown 2D DQ.

Post game trials! Need help!

Should I assume that when Nelson is all "make a wish!" I should pick the strong weapon recipe? At least in this first trial? Do any of the other options have things worth seeing?

Yeah that's the best reward. The horse race one is also worth it.

Sword is good, but you have to make it first, which requires some materials and doing a few other things in the post game (
Homura village sidequests for the access to the forge and Platinum? race reward for the Hammer
). The sword that you make has the same stat as your current hero sword, but having 2 of them lets you dual wield and the new sword can be upgraded to +3 iirc.
Race unlocks a new tier of races (Black), H Book is a decent accessory.
Marriage is a nice little thing, which I went for in my 3rd trial.
I only cleared each trial once, but from what I understand, you can clear them multiple times to get all those things. There's one more thing you get for getting all wishes, but I don't remember what it was

Well there's 5 trial bosses, but only 3 trial dungeons. The bosses themselves are unique though.

Speaking of the trials...

What is the strategy for Homer? I am overleveled definitely but I am still struggling a bit to defeat him in under 50 turns.

If you clear them beyond all wishes you receive the recipe book for some of the strongest weapons in the whole game.
