GI: Inkopolis In Splatoon 2 Is Drowning Out Hate With Trans-Positivity

Whoa saw this when I first booted up splatoon 2 this weekend and thought it a little odd but paid no kind. Pretty cool there's people out there spreading a positive message.

Can I move to Japan Inkopolis?

I haven't played Splatoon yet but are hairstyles and clothing unisex? I liked that Animal Crossing (eventually) lets you rock whatever you want regardless of the sex you choose for your character.

The hairstyles are different for both genders, but all gear can be worn.

My brother was just talking at me earlier this evening about how much he doesn't want to see all of this "LGBT advertisement" all over Splatoon 2. He went so far as to tweet out this message he wrote:

DHr5O2YU0AAbxiI.jpg:large

He then went on to try and tell me how there are only two genders, how gender has never historically ever changed meaning (and is always synonymous with sex), and the notion that it does is "moving the goalposts" with regards to proving him wrong (yes, really).

This was a frustrating and utterly disappointing conversation, to say the very least.

Try as I might, it's ever more apparent every time I hear from him that you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

Honestly I wish people would leave this shit out of Splatoon, the furry war was bad enough (especially since some people were including links to their NSFW Twitter accounts in a damn kids game). Not that trans people don't deserve positivity and all but Inkopolis is for dumb squid memes, there are a million other places you can post this stuff.

Trans people exist everywhere though. You can't just sweep it under the rug and cover your ears if it makes you uncomfortable for any reason.

So basically, trans people deserve positivity, you just don't want to have to look at it.

If only people could stop using their right to free speech, amirite?

But seriously, you don't decide what goes or not in a public space that is working as intended, Trans positivy has as much right to appear there as anything else.

I don't think equating LGBT to furry fandom is exactly ideal.

So what's that RoboCop one about, lol

There has to be some Twitter account that archives some of these rad Japan posts that I can follow

"[W]as bad enough" is not the way to put that. How about "was obviously worse"? Because, y'know, trans-positivity is not equatable to desperate attempts to expose children to bizarre internet pornography?

The lack of Miiverse is such a disappointment. I hate how empty the Switch UI is with its complete lack of personality.

Nintendo should bring it and StreetPass back with a future update. (Especially Miiverse.)

I don't think I'm being unreasonable here, trans people have nothing to do with Splatoon. It's like if I went into the Sonic Mania OT and started posting about how all body shapes are beautiful. I might not be wrong but it's still not the place to be talking about it.

Not equating the two, just saying that the furry stuff was a similar posting fad that flooded my square and drowned out everything else.

Well excuse me for recognizing that marginalized people exist.

Being fat is not marginalized and/or killed for simply existing so bad analogy.

I'd actually argue Splatoon, with its ability to change gender on a whim and emphasis on being who you want to be, is a largely important game for trans identity.

And its function as that is more important than your discomfort with it.

Sometimes things exist and become more than what they were intended.

i remember when i saw robocop in splatoon 2. i got so upset because i play videogames to escape robocop and he doesn't even have anything to do with splatoon.

The problems is that "discussion" isn't taking place or even possible? on Inkopollis it has become the equivalent of shitposting or drive by posting on both sides of whichever meme or topic is for the week. I can't wait for Nintendo to add a blocking feature of some sort so I can easily block everyone who is doing it.

The furries and anti-furries were really out of control.

It's kind of weird to argue that inkopolis isn't a place to extend social discourse.
It's literally what made Splatoon1 so cool. The haunting posts after Iwatas death, or the Paris terror attacks created an amazing sense of community and empathy. Something that I'm happy to see continue in Splatoon 2.

Inkopolis would be a much lesser place if it were just useless Spongebob memes.

Still I think splatoon is the last place people wanna see these discussions at. I get that the hate speech should be removed but inkopolis has derailed so much it's a problem.

I can't speak for trans people, but my feeling is that many of them would be happy to see support while playing games, especially considering how hostile and corrupt online gaming culture can often otherwise be. I don't think too much love for the oppressed will ever really be a problem; not in the near future certainly.

I totally get that sometimes you just want to sit down and play a video game. But I'm not quite sure where seeing a positive message in the community is detracting from that.

Yup. I love that Inkopolis gets to be such a warm and friendly place. I had such a huge smile when I saw people sharing the trans/nb love this weekend. It's completely down with the game's cute, be-yourself, and upbeat vibe.

Ah yes the apolitical haven of questionable art of cartoon sea creature girls and RoboCop fanart that is Japan's Splatoon 2 community. Totally better than spreading a positive message and fighting against a hateful one.

Everyone knows LGBT people are accepted in Japan and are depicted with the upmost respect in their media.

1.- By that logic, cis people have nothing to do with Splatoon, it's a game about fictional squid people that, by the way, has an option to switch the gender of your squid at any moment. And yes, it's the same squid.
2.-Trans people play splatoon, the fuck are you to say anything they have to say about their identity is out of bounds for splatoon?
3.-Sonic Mania has no public posting platform integrated into it for such discussion to happen, your analogy is flawed because this pertains splatoon 2, which DOES have a public posting platform where people are free to express themselves in accordance to freedom of speech, nintendo has not banned any topic for the plaza, no rules are being broken by having cute trans positivity in the plaza, the feature is working as intended.
4.- if this makes you uncomfortable, that is your problem.

This as a response to hate is good. The problem is that the hate shouldn't have made it to the square in the first place. I hope Nintendo will look closer at posts from now on.

I really love these posts. Personally speaking, if Splatoon existed when I was a kid and I saw these posts, it would have really helped me out. I hope there's some young trans people out there who see these and realize that they're not alone.

Since all of the images are hosted through Facebook and Twitter instead of their own platform (Miiverse), I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

For what it's worth I saw the positivity first and then I think the backlash came after. I just checked into the plaza one day and it was flooded with trans/nb love. It was only afterward that I started seeing things like "keep politics out of kids' games" or "tumblr was a mistake". I guess now maybe people are drowning that out with even further love which is cool with me.

Lol I find it odd that someone's gender is a political issue. This world has so much changing to go through. Still can't decide to pick up the Japanese version or the North American version of the game.

Amen, sibling. Amen.

I'm well aware, thanks. If you can spot the part in my post where I said this should be banned I'll be glad to apologize, but I'm pretty sure I just said I wasn't a fan and wished people wouldn't do it. Last I checked Neogaf has not banned that opinion and no rules are being broken by expressing it, the forum is working as intended.

Honestly, the best solution would be for Nintendo to add a block feature so people who don't want to see this stuff can filter it out. I'm already fine with LGBT and don't need to see fifty million supportive messages about it when I'd rather see a silly picture of Crash with tentacles saying "Woahmy".

I never saw the hate messages. I don't play Splatoon everyday so that might've helped.

I just read one message that seemed odd today "Stop or they'll remove our drawing privileges". Now I think I understand what happened.

The furry war was insane, though.

I sighed so hard after seeing this.

Not that one is better than the other or that it should ONLY be this or that. I just miss seeing the mix of both. That Robocop picture is awesome!

Why did Nintendo seperate Japan players base from the US player base?

Was it because of the app? I miss logging on and playing with or against Japanese players. I see Japanese players every now and again but that's most likely someone's second Japanese account.

So fine with "LGBT", in fact, that you don't want to see them talk about being LGBT or spread love for LGBT people in places you personally deem unnecessary? Because they have "nothing to do with" said places?

But how would they be able to block something based on content? Posts have no tags or titles so they have no way of categorizing them besides their relative popularity. That kind of metadata would need to be user generated by viewers in the square and I don't see that catching on unless you're ready to spend an extra few seconds tagging all the memes as memes. I agree that it would be nice to have the option but I don't really see it working all that well in practice. Yeahing a post already takes too long for my taste

This is a very touchy subject. You should watch how you phrase your sentences and tones of your posts because it doesn't come off well.

Perhaps something like when you block a post, you give a reason from a list, and then other posts that have been blocked for similar reasons will appear less frequently. In this case the reason could be something like "I'm seeing too many posts on this subject". You already have to do it for reports, so maybe it could work.

I didnt went into the article, but basing on the OP's premise. I dont believe splatoon miiverse esque space is the right place to draw "trans gender squids" in the first place, since there are a lot of different backgrounds that are not ready to deal with such "radical" ideas. Not to mention that a lot of users could be like 10 year olds or somewhere around.

I know that Nintendo allows such drawings in the first place, but I dont think is to express your favorite gender to the public.

I hope that I dont get labelled as a phobic or hater just because I think differently.

Granted, people should never insult or offend each other regardless of who you are.
