GI: Inkopolis In Splatoon 2 Is Drowning Out Hate With Trans-Positivity

Recently, Splatoon's Inkopolis has become about the topic of trans men and women. It started off small, with a few messages of trans positivity, celebrating that people are people and a game like Splatoon can reinforce that. Predictably, this also lead to people stating the opposite, often in harassing and aggressive ways complaining that mentioning trans pride is inappropriate, sometimes with slurs slipping through. While a lot of the counter-messages were quickly deleted, many still filtered in, leading to an actual turf war within the streets of Inkopolis.

STOP SPREADING HATE

It is decidedly difficult to change the culture of a game, but despite the hate, Splatoon 2 players have been trying to drown it out with positivity.

I saw one that said:

"If I had a dime for every gender I'd have 20 cents."

There are dumbasses making bad jokes, too, unfortunately. Anyways, that whole lobby area is just fucking weird. One minute it's Knack 2, the next it's furry stuff.

It was very heartwarming to see so much support in the game and from the community. I'm kinda peeved that some bad eggs dampened the atmosphere, but I reported them and moved on.

I wonder if because of how it works through social media people are now in echo chambers of a sort regarding drawings, for example everyone in the press was seeing that post by jeff gerstmann

It's like we go through waves of memes that change every 2 days or so. It's weird, but this last batch was just unfortunate and I hope it dies fast.

Edit: Whoops, I misread the article. The hate needs to die, not the positivity.

Don't have a switch yet but sounds a lot less fun that Splatoon 1's endless spongebob jokes

The messages you see are based on some kind of popularity measurement (whether through social media or in game) rather than being the stuff from the people you just played with. I don't even think you can see their stuff in game like you could in the first one.

It seems like it's a lot easier to start a trend, either positive or negative.

I really miss the random stuff from the first one.

Edit: I was going to show a picture of what the turf war looks like, but I'm honestly worried someone would get the wrong idea since one of those posts is really derogatory.

Every time I play Splatoon I swear I see four or more trans-positive messages. Really cool that the community is so welcoming to non-cis folks.

I don't really remember these weird meme trends in the first game happening much. It was mostly spongebob memes a lot of the time, fanart/squid sisters, and other random stuff.

Miiverse water guy didn't die for this. :(

Hope Nintendo cracks down on the anti-trans stuff. Not really expecting it to happen, but hopefully.

Yeah last time I was on it was a sea of negativity, it was pretty depressing.

I really don't see much negativity, at least on my side.

In fact, there's so much love for pro-trans posts in my inkopolis. The most depressing I see is probably the ones related to "Booyah".

I never really saw any of the negative trans posts. I saw plenty of supportive posts though which was nice.

Huh, looking at the replies in this thread, it seems opposite to the last thing I read about this. I had heard that it had been flooded with anti-trans comment, but going by what you're all saying, was the effect to overwhelm it with trans positivity successful?

Yeah, the plaza is filled with a bunch of positive posts now (and some eclipse stuff).

Canadians burned my passport
I saw one or two shitty ones, but the vast majority of the ones that show up in the square are very positive

Props to all the fantastic Squidkids out there!

I have seen nothing but positivity the last few days.

What do you think though?

"if you're a dude and you like to suck dicks I'm fine with that" Yeah sure buddy.... Keep politics out of my games, man what the fuck ever. If this guy likes the lgtbt community so much why did he make a video reporting all their splatoon posts I WONDER>>>>>>>>>>

Can't get behind the guy in this video.

RE: The trans/nobinary stuff. The positivity is nice but it did strike me as odd considering teh last time I was online was during all the furry stuff. I can get behind the messages being positive/signs of support because it's nice to log onto a game and not be bombarded with negative hateful garbage for once.

I've been offline lately due to a recent move, so I've missed a lot of these trends, but I'm glad that there's people pushing back against hate there. I don't want to have to feel unwelcome in a game I enjoy so much. I think Nintendo needs to take a stronger stance against hateful, discriminatory posts as well.

Miiverse has always had inconsistent weirdos who post lots of nonsense. What makes you think marginal groups would have it any better? You have to tacitly accept that only a certain kind of group think can exist here...

Now let us bask in the Farm Party miiverse, Yeah! this picture of a Shrek meme I drew from 2009.

What do you think though?
I'm cool with it. As an actor (in training......for 14+ years), I've always been supportive of the LGBT community (I know it's considered a stereotype by this point, but I don't mind). Nothing wrong with showing some positivity.

That's a shame to hear, I really liked the randomness in the first one as well. Don't really get why they changed to the new system, at its very best it seems like a lateral move.

Yeah that guy seems like a total dick the way he says "If you a guy and like to suck dicks, I'm down with that" like an insult. Then he calls the posts "bullshit". He's really talking out both sides of his mouth, and on top of that: Why does it matter so much to him when people post trans positive stuff when there's also the people posting shit like "Trans is a mental disorder". Why is trans positive suddenly "crossing the line"?

LGBT isn't politics. They're people trying to live a good life just like everyone else, and not be treated as third class citizens. In a world that's still incredibly negative toward LGBT, especially when a world leading country has a leader that's against it, there definitely should be some positivity.

Also lol @ the "There's kids playing this game" shit, as if the existence of people that are trans is somehow "inappropriate" for children, when trans children actually do exist.

Something strange about the algorithm seeing as I've seen all the posts in this thread multiple times. I thought they were people I'd played with...

There must be a very small pool of posts that are being beamed to everyone, I guess.

Can I move to Japan Inkopolis?

I haven't played Splatoon yet but are hairstyles and clothing unisex? I liked that Animal Crossing (eventually) lets you rock whatever you want regardless of the sex you choose for your character.
