Smoke, flashes the lot. So now I'm on my tablet wondering what the fuck do I buy.

60Hz/1080/1440p
144Hz/1080p/1440p

Obviously I'd like to go Gsync but that's too rich for my blood. I'm currently using a 24" 60Hz 1080p which honestly I was never happy with for gaming due to high ms.

Question, if I go 144Hz will 60fps feel like 30fps does now? (Choppy and slow), can you set 144Hz monitors to 60Hz in games you can't hit 144fps in? I only have a GTX 970 so I think it's wise sticking to 1080p?

What a shit end to my evening though, I really didn't need this.

UPDATE:

Hmm, not a good first impression here. Unless I tilt the monitor back or put it to it's highest stand setting the bottom half of the screen is tinted blue, I'm guessing that's a viewing angle issue or what? It's much worse the brighter the screen settings and on white backgrounds. My old monitor was a TN panel too and nowhere near this extreme. Nearly all the stand heights and positions render the display unusable. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to let me know.

EDIT: Couldn't get it to look non dog shit using the default Windows profile, but using NVCP to set it up using online calibration tests and now it looks really great, much better than my other monitor and 144Hz feels nice, although, it wasn't as massive as I was expecting but still noticeable.

Depends on what games you will play and what hardware you have to push 144 frames.

I settled for 1440p/60 because my Gpu won't go above that.

If you can't afford G-Sync, still go for the higher refresh. 1440p if your wallet can stretch to it but I would prioritise refresh over the resolution any day. Got a 1440p 165Hz and I'd trade the former if I had to.

i didnt know PC monitors could explode.

Anything electrical can. I'm sure people didn't think phones could until Note 7.

what is your gpu???

i didnt know PC monitors could explode.

GTX 970

Well I mean it's not in bits like a grenade hit it, but it was an extremely loud bang that nearly gave me a heart attack, smoke and some bright lights. Something inside died obviously but no idea what, I just unplugged it and it's on my bed. I've never had anything like this happen before.

After playing with 100+ FPS for a while, 60 definetly feels choppy and unresponsive. But you get used to it quickly. But I have a Gsync monitor and a 1080 Ti. 100+ fps in modern games is hard to achieve. Especially when it comes to high settings and 1440p^^

Personally, I'd go 1440p/60fps IPS, probably from Dell or something. Video watching takes priority over gaming for me. (Although I only have a 1060 that I plan on keeping until it dies)

144fps = hardcore CPU. Even OC'd i7s might have issue with some AAA games down the line.

970?

1080 60hz.

VS239 is a nice one. I got a dell uh2414h friday and it's a very nice monitor, but I think the Asus was a better deal.

I'd personally bump it up to at least 1440p, because if you'll be upgrading your GPU within 1-3 years (which I presume is likely since the 970 is starting to show its age) you won't be getting the most out of your new card if you stick to 1080p. You'd have to reconsider your monitor yet again in such a situation.

I dunno about the difference between 60 and 144, but a 970 will not likely be hitting 144 Hz on many of the newer games unless you drop a lot of the visual candy. Best middle-ground option would be to go 1440/60 imo, and lower some settings or drop the res to 1920x1080 if your card isn't cutting it. Alternatively, look into a nice 21:9 monitor if you're into that sorta thing.

What's your price range?

In my personal experience, the gulf isn't nearly as obvious and 60Hz still looks fine on a 144Hz monitor (as opposed to the clear difference of "choppy and slow" in 30fps), but I do still notice some difference when switching between the two. I haven't run into too many games that don't give me an option for native refresh rate, but those I have played didn't look bad IMO.

If you can stomach the $260 price tag, the VG248QE is still a top quality 144Hz 1080p monitor.

Otherwise just stick to the cheap old reliable VS239H-P.
vg246qe is great, but is it still a lottery or something when it comes to getting one with good color/PQ, especially at higher HZ? I bought one a few years ago and colors look pretty bad the higher I go up in HZ, and using lightboost turns color quality to garbage levels

No, 60fps won't feel as bad as 30fps does now, but you may be like me and only want to play fast paced games or FPS at 90+Hz.
You can lower the refresh rate of HRR monitors but as long as you are getting 90-100fps minimum most of the time in a game, you won't really notice varying framerates anywhere near as much as you do with lower framerates.
I recommend QNIX's QX2710, it's an amazing deal if you don't mind overclocking the refresh rate yourself. It's a 1440p 60Hz PLS (similar to IPS color quality) panel by default, but most are able to get ~110Hz out of it.

You just don't have to play everything at native refresh. but when you can go above 100fps in something like Rocket League, nothing will do. Hnnng

My biggest fear is 60fps feeling choppy if I go to 144Hz because most games I play won't hit 144Hz, especially newer games and future ones. If that's a realistic issue I'd rather go for 1080p/60 with 1ms until I can afford a full rig rebuild with a better GPU.

Budget is well, as low as possible without wasting my money, I want something good even if it's 1080p/60, I don't want ghosting etc. £300 at the absolute most but even that would fuck me over for awhile so much less would be best.

Full specs GTX 970, i5 3570k 4.3GHz, 16GB 2133MHz. Stable performance is the most important thing, I'm very sensitive to dips.

I have no idea what they're like now but I bought mine a few years ago and I still use it as a secondary monitor. I just set it to 120Hz and forget about it. No lightboost, just plain TN. You're not exactly flush with options in the 1080p144 monitor range.

vg248qe is the monitor I use currently, and yeah the initial impression can be underwhelming. However, I found a recommended windows color profile at Tom's Hardware/reddit/somewhere similar, and once configured through that the jump in picture quality was night and day. Assuming there aren't better options now for same price, I would still recommend it.

EDIT: for OP reference, my current PC build is not bleeding edge at all: i5 2500k 3.3GHz on an ASUS Maximus IV mobo, with 16GB of ram and an r9 380 card.

Also found the link to the ICC profile stuff for the VG248QE

You might want to get that checked out man.

What was the last thing you were looking at; this is important.

It was porn wasn't it? The porn you were looking at was too stronk for your monitor.

Imo 144Hz is useless without adaptive sync and/or a beefy PC. Go 1440/60 or something

1440p with a 970? I wouldn't do that.
