As far as I'm aware ISIS believe that Mecca and other religious sites are "idolatrous". They've been talking about blowing it up for a while now:
http://www.newsweek.com/islamic-state-aims-occupy-mecca-300205

I can kinda see where they're going with that as a lot of people shop while on their Hajj pilgrimage.

Edit: I think they're misinterpreting that completely but I can see how that could be used by ISIS for propaganda reasons. Basically saying consumerism is equal to idolatry.

BTW two more attacks were foiled as of now.

ISIS doesn't recognize the Saudi Arabia and wants to liberate Mecca from them.

They're not praying to souvenirs lol

I've got a Kabah souvenir from ages ago. It's not like I'm idolising it or wearing it around my neck.

Everybody I know who went on their Hajj got some small souvenirs. I'm not disgusted by that personally.

But ISIS are fucking crazy.

the Kaaba is a house of worship (a mosque)

you can literally pray inside it

it isn't an idol and mostly everyone knows that.... ISIS is just being ISIS

They are the dudes that attacked Masjid al Nabawi last year.

Eh. The history of idolatry in Islam largely surrounds those who lived away from Mecca, who took things from the site and prayed to them instead to compensate for the distance. I don't think gift shops are facilitating that.

Good on Saudi's forces for getting this done without any casualties, though. Jeez.

Why does ISIS want to attack Mecca?

IIRC their worst enemies are Muslims who don't pledge allegiance to their caliphate. In their doctrine Christians would be allowed to live as long as they accept ISIS as their rulers, but any Muslim would have to take it a step further and basically convert to their version of Islam or face death.

Part of the untold story of ISIS in the West; they are killing far more Islamic people than anyone else.

When your own creation comes back to destroy you. A tale as old as humanity.

Glad no innocent people were injured.

P.S: I'm talking about ideology not that SA directly created ISIS. We all know the genesis of the group happened in the jails of Iraq among ex-baasists members.

Live video of the Grand Mosque shows AL Taraweh prayer going normally.

Appreciate the effort of The Saudi forces in protecting Mecca.

ISIS/Baghdadi was inspired by Al-Qaeda/Bin Laden. Bin Laden/Al-Qaeda was inspired by Juhayman Al-Otaybi.

Read up on the siege of Mecca, where Juhayman led a bloody insurrection in 1979 by capturing the holy mosque structure in Mecca, if you're at all interested in understanding how modern "Radical Islamic" terrorism was born.

There is a book by the same name I want to read related to this.

No we haven't. What are you talking about?

But such a transformation has come at a cost. The Washington-based Gulf Institute estimates that 95 per cent of Mecca's millennium-old buildings have been demolished in the past two decades alone. Dozens of key historical sites dating back to the birth of Islam have already been lost and there is a scramble among archaeologists and academics to try and encourage the authorities to preserve what little remains.

Many senior Wahabis are vehemently against the preservation of historical Islamic sites that are linked to the prophet because they believe it encourages shirq – the sin of idol worshipping.

But Dr Irfan al-Alawi, executive director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation which obtained the new photographs from inside the Grand Mosque, says the removal of the Ottoman and Abbasid columns will leave future generations of Muslims ignorant of their significance.

ISIS was born out of extreme Theocratic ideologies.
Theocracy contradicts with Monarchy (Saudi Arabia) since Theocracy gives more power to religious figures
Example
Muslim Brotherhood has the Murshid (Sunni)
Iran has also a Murshid (Shia)
ISIS has the Khalifa
AL Qaida had Osama

Fucked up. Now watch them blame Qatar
There are evidence that the Qatari government financed and trained terrorist organization
Hamas for example and also in Libya (Many videos showing Qatari forces camouflaged as militants are being broadcasted in most Gulf media :

Why does ISIS want to attack Mecca?

Because ISIS is full of dicks and does not represent all of Islam ?

Good that no one (of worth) got injured. It's Eid on this weekend, Eid is basically Muslim Christmas for the few who don't know .. and the city would be PACKED with people at this time. I hope this was the only thing ISIS had planned and the rest of the weekend goes smoothly.

Good that was stopped because at a later time a lot of people would've died.

I'm kind of surprised even that early in the day it wasn't crowded enough to harm anyone.

If I was attending a religious service where people from around the world will be crushing the event to a crazy degree I would be at the border camping out overnight and rely on dry food and portable wash towels to maintain myself. And I would expect thousands to be doing that as well.

(CNN)Saudi security forces on Friday prevented an imminent attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the country's Interior Ministry said on state-run TV.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/23/middleeast/grand-mosque-attack-foiled/index.html
A suspect planning an attack on the mosque blew himself up in a nearby neighborhood when security forces surrounded a home where the man was hiding, according to the ministry.
The suspect refused to comply with demands to surrender, opened fire on security forces and then killed himself, officials said.
The explosion caused the partial collapse of the building in which the suspect was hiding. Six expatriates were injured and taken to a hospital, and five security personnel received minor injuries, a Saudi Press official in London told CNN.
Five people, including one woman, suspected of involvement in the plot were arrested. Three groups, two based in Mecca and one in Jeddah, planned the attack, the Interior Ministry said.
The Grand Mosque, or the Masjid al-Haram, is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds Islam's holiest site, the Kaaba -- a cube-shaped shrine that worshippers circle during the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage that brings millions of people to Mecca.

My dad is on Hajj right now. I told him he shouldn't have gone. Those ISIS motherfuckers are crazy enough to attack Mecca or Medinah. God, I hope nothing bad happens.

I wonder if they would destroy the black rock at the Kabba? Would they consider it an idol?

Where do you live?

If you look at his post history in the Qatar blockade thread you'll see a pattern. He all but defends Saudi's carpet bombing cities in Yemen in there.

He's just one step away from blaming this on Qatar already, which is total BS. Chances are higher this is from one of the many terrorist organizations the Saudis have funded over the last few decades.

Why does ISIS want to attack Mecca?

Because they're insane. Virtually every major Muslim organization in the entire world has condemned them over and over again. Almost every Muslim country is in some way or another at war with them. Muslims throughout the world have continuously said that Isis doesn't represent Muslims and are in conflict with the very basic principles of Islam.

However, these voices are barely covered by western media so you have the average person thinking Isis = Islam = Terrorist. So when something like his happens (and it happens every day considering most of Isis victims are Muslims), non-Muslims are confused.

And btw, Isis tried this last Ramadan as well. In that attempt, a security guard was killed when he stopped the suicide bomber.

Destroying Mecca would summon the wrath of Muslims all over the world regardless of their political stance.

Was this confirmed to be ISIS?

In 1979 an extremist group attacked the grand mosque and killed 127 people and injured 451. The standoff lasted for weeks.
