AFAIK ruby should be pre-installed on recent versions of OSX. Just try to open the console in the directory where you extracted the archive and write "ruby similarusers.rb [username]"

Two Worlds II got robbed!

I agree Amir0x, GAF failed hard!

At least there's an excuse for Two Worlds II since it wasn't out in the bulk of GAF's territories yet.

What's the excuse for Heavy Rain? "Oh hey a game that's only about story has a terrible story. But I like what it says about the industry, though!" :lol

Total similarity score: 11236[/code]Lowest total similarity I've seen so far, congrats ;)

Thanks. Figured as much, most of my games are very low on that ranking. I wonder how much it would be if I took out my votes for Bayonetta and Mario Galaxy 2. :lol

Fucking christ, GAFers with no taste. You've failed GAF again.

At least Super Meat Boy made top ten, and not that other artsy-fuckshit sacred cow LIMBO.

That part where you have to

is pretty good?

That's about all I got really to explain it.

kinda clear now who has no taste ;D

I can't get that ruby thing to work, where do i put my user name in? when I run it, it just runs and then displays no name and list obviously.

I was so waiting for your post. I knew you'd have something to say about the awesome Heavy Rain making the top 10. I just had no idea you'd insult all of us who have it on our list by saying we have no taste and have failed GAF.

Might I suggest a game of Heavy Rain to show you the cause and effect of your actions? :p

Thanks for the hard work.

I couldn't be more indifferent to the results. I guess I'd like it if VVVVVV and Pac-Man:CE DX were higher.

Suggesting I play Heavy Rain to show the cause and effect of my actions is like suggesting I listen to Blink 182 to understand the depth and nuance possible in music.

There is no cause and effect in Heavy Rain, only the hilarious pretense of such things. And of course, all that shitty writing.

But you did like FFXIII too, right? That about sums it up. Shitty stories are you thing.

Standing at a doorway
pistol in hand, shaking, with no option except to knock at the door, knowing you're being asked to kill some random stranger (which I had no intention of doing)
was one of the most agonizing and poignant moments I've had in gaming all year. Heavy Rain had several of those moments. And while some could write it off for plotholes or reduce it by calling it just a sequence of QTEs, the way it handled fail conditions and turned those into branching storylines was incredibly well done, even if not perfect. People talk about having personalized pathways through games all the time, but I've never seen the idea work nearly as well as Heavy Rain. When comparing stories with my friends it was like we played completely different games.

On the other hand, try as I might I just couldn't find the fun part of Mass Effect 2, even though I loved the first game. But hey, different strokes and all that.

Kinda shitty overall IMO

ME2, really???
Heavy Rain in top 10???
Fallout: NV not in top 10???

GAF hivemind is starting to suck.

At least Nier made it, there is a god.

The people have spoken... The bastards.

I didn't take much interest in last years thread but you guys really go to town. A comprehensive victory over the majority of other game sites when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Thanks for all the great work, Cheesemeister and timetokill. It's much appreciated. Well organised thread and pretty much smooth sailing throughout.

I'm ok with the top 3.

I'm most disappointed in GAF for snubbing Monster Hunter Tri. I have two/three other small titles on my list that aren't anywhere near the top, but I expected as much.

Bayonetta and Heavy Rain are both way too high, imo.

Ballot Length Distribution
The number of entries per ballot.
Data is presented as: % of ballots (raw number)

10 titles: 68.19% (626)
9 titles: 3.38% (31)
8 titles: 4.90% (45)
7 titles: 4.03% (37)
6 titles: 4.03% (37)
5 titles: 7.30% (67)
4 titles: 3.27% (30)
3 titles: 2.83% (26)
2 titles: 1.31% (12)
1 title: 0.76% (7)
Thanks for that data point in particular. :D Discussion about tiered systems with less than 10 votes officially laid to rest. It's obvious that GAF wants its 10 votes (minimum!) :)

it was so awesome

Kirby's Epic Perfect Yarn Game should have been higher

Somewhat suprised at Singularity's placement. Seemed like it was gaining traction as more people played it and I caught a youtube review for it a few days ago and was very impressed. Its certainly on my list of games to play soon

Olorin mentioned 5 games I had never even heard about, that's pretty interesting.

What part of the script do we need to change to our usernames?
None, you just supply it as a command line parameter. That is, open a console in the directory and type this:
ruby similarusers.rb yourusernamehere

Yeah, cause the only reason you can like a game is the story. God forbid that the music, setting, graphics, or gameplay dictate someones dis/like of a game. I don't like shitty stories in gaming, I just don't think HR had one. FFXIII's left a lot to be desired, but the aforementioned reasons make up for the story.

I just wrote a script that tells you the top 5 GotY lists that were most similar to yours (or to anyone's really, the starting user name is a parameter). The numbers in parentheses are a similarity rating (higher = more similar).

As a side effect it also tells you how much of a conformist you are (higher total similarity score = higher conformance to the GAF consensus).

Here's the script + data file:
http://www.metaclassofnil.com/gaf/gafgoty2011-compare.zip
Wow, that's a pretty brilliant idea! I don't know wtf a ruby is, so if you could run this once for me (or maybe put it online after all? This is such a good idea that I believe many people would be interested in this!), I'd love it. :)

Yeah, we definitely played two different games.

And because of this thread I'm definitely picking up a copy of Vanquish. Thanks GAF.

It's nice to see Amnesia get the merit award for horror. Not that it had much competition, but it was the greatest horror game of the last ten years.

NullPointer said:

No, we didn't. There literally is no consequences whether you kill the guy or not. The outcome of the game is the same. The police don't even acknowledge that Ethan is now a savage murderer.

My current web host doesn't support ruby scripts, and I really don't want to rewrite it in a different language. I think I'll just let it write the list for everyone in a huge text file and upload it. In the meantime:

What are all results? do they include the honorable mentions? because Majin the forsaken Kingdom should at least have a score of 1 since I mentioned the game in my most honorable, unless it`s there somewhere and I don`t see it.

Great job guys, overall I can`t argue with the top games, except maybe Super Meatboy, some great games in 2010.

So I guess I'm the fourth weirdest person on GAF. Awesome! It certainly says something that 999 was the highest-ranked game on my list.

I'm very curious what the script would turn out for people similar to me, but since I'm on my iPod until tomorrow I'll have to wait for that text file. Great idea, Durante!

Couldn't agree with your post more, Amir0x. I'm surprised how much I agree with you these days.

I'm really pleased Super Meat Boy made the list too. Considering the game was mostly constructed by two guys in some apartment, the title is truly an underdog success story. This is especially true considering Gran Turismo 5 comes directly after it on the list (snicker). A strong vision on a shoestring budget can still be a powerful thing.

Whoo, I had a feeling I'd be at the top of that list. DSiWare doesn't seem to be very popular.
