Indie Games 2015 [May] Now Voting - Post 348!

Thanks for letting us know. It would be great if we remove the games that have been posted a second time. Otherwise I might not notice that I post them multiple times in the next thread (@titch).
No problem

Here's another that was mentioned but didnt have a proper post

Code 7 - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
dmk1Oq.jpg

http://retragames.itch.io/code-7

Code 7 is our idea of a modern text adventure. It combines the text adventure genre with cinematic fully-voiced storytelling. You have to play to it to understand how well a text adventure can feel in 2015.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Still trying to play some may games, I am missing some surprises this month. So far I only liked the games that I already knew were good.

Earthling Priorities - PC
CGReXvsW0AAXaNn.png

http://earthlingpriorities.demigiant.com/

Earthling Priorities is a subtle mini-adventure game, partly homaging those good ol' times when Space Quest happened and Big Brother was still considered a bad thing.

Icarus.1 - ????
CGRouQPXEAEWsb1.jpg

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=47666.0

Abandoned for decades, crew MIA, the Icarus.1's job was to store mined minerals from the systems outlying planets. It orbits the local sun to maintain it's solar energy and proved a lucrative business for JME corp. After contact was lost no attempt was ever made to make contact with the stricken station, instead the project was mothballed - a cover up some may say. Many stories about what happened have become lore but Sam isn't focusing on these 'stories', the goal is the cargo and the wealth it will bring. We pick up the action just as the shuttle pod has docked to the abandoned Icarus.1

Tick Tock Isle - Free demo (PC, Browser)
CGRrx1DW8AEcb0F.png

http://squiddershins.com/games/tick-tock-isle/

In the year 20XX a confident, young horologist by the name of Strike is inadvertently transported into the past while attempting to repair a mysterious, abandoned clock tower. Endeavoring to return to the future, Strike must fix both the time machine and the island’s dysfunctional family who are responsible for much of the clock’s disrepair.

As the spiritual successor to Cat Poke, Tick Tock Isle plays like a point and click platform game that relies heavily on story, character interaction, creative thinking, and poking.‬

Parafractum - PC, Mac, Linux
CGSFVmWUIAE5oJd.png

https://www.facebook.com/BernoulliGames/videos/950725528293066/

Parafractum is a 2D platform game set in a procedurally generated world. Go wherever you want in a vast world which is different every time you play. Find and collect loot to customize and enhance your character. Trade with, threaten or fight survivors to get what you need. Beat permadeath, by unlocking checkpoints and new features for future playthroughs. Uncover the many secrets this world has to offer and destroy a great evil within - alone, or with a friend.

OP impressions:

Grimstorm
Classic, GhostnGoblins style action platformer. Its not really "bad" but it seems to be a first proper videogame experience, which shows a lot in the level & mechanic design and the overall polish. Cute, but not really recommended.

Heavens Below
2D navigation game with pleasing art style and mood. Unfortunately, it seems to be more of a concept currently, so I can't recommend it much either.

In the court of the Yellow King
Same as Grimstorm

Icy

Most intriguing game so far. A story/decision survival game. Basically like Neo Scavenger with less polish, which is also its downfall. It actually manages to start telling an engaing story, but the different elements (UI, combat..) simply didnt have enough development time yet to be continuously fun. A good example is the combat, which is always going to be the same few decisions and instead of being forced to react to the situation, you can just always use whatever best fits your character. its worth a look to check out the style of game and to get a taste of whats to come. They are currently still in Alpha, so I expect more improvements.

Iridescent

Pretty standard puzzle platformer, nothing to speak off and rather uninteresting overall.

Masochisia
Adventure game that uses pretty simpe mechanics, but used the art style and story to great effect. Definitely a smaller project something I would recommend checking out

Regular Human Basketball - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)

Two regular humans play some regular B-Ball. No giant mechanical death machines here!
Inspired by the simple controls of QWOP and the relaxing co-operative gameplay of Spaceteam comes the new party game from Powerhoof,

I haven't played enough games this month that I've enjoyed enough to vote for, but if I did Environmental Station Alpha would easily be on the top of my list. I've been absolutely blown away by the sheer amount of content, and the consistently excellent level and boss design. I would call the game almost perfect were it not for some difficulty-balancing issues toward the end of the game and some puzzles near the very end which were perhaps too vague. I've spent over 12 hours playing this game and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Metroidvanias.

So...according to the Steam thread, SuperHOT is supposed to release this month

OMGOOh1.gif

First of all Supernatural is fantastic.

Secondly SuperHOT is definitely out this month! (It's coming to the Bone I think?)

THIRDLY, and perhaps most importantly, I played the demo for Serpent in the Staglands. It's amazing. No hand holding, very complex but a lot of fun to explore the systems and to try and work things out for yourself.

Treasure Adventure World - PC

A remake (more of a re-imagining, really) of a freeware game called Treasure Adventure Game. Treasure Adventure World (TAW) is a huge open-world side-scrolling platform adventure game. Some might even call it a “metroidvania“. The premise is simple: Sail the world, searching for ancient artefacts that were once powerful weapons used to fight an evil demon.

As one of the resident first-person-experience hawkers, I must inform everyone that Shape of the World now has a Kickstarter. Wander a vast, colorful wilderness that comes alive and changes itself in response to collecting the appropriate markers. For those who wanted more out of Proteus, this is it.

I'd actually had a chance to speak with project lead Stu Maxwell some months back, where we batted back and forth the idea of feeling "lost" in an adventurous, fun way like when we were kids. The pleasure found in getting lost in a mall at a very young age and stumbling across stores we didn't know were there. The joy in finding a new and beautiful piece of land crafted by nature over millions of years, and all the drama you can extract from the telltale signs of battling the elements, plant growth and traces of animals that once called it their home.

They have a really good sense for what they're after, and I think the more "alive" nature of the world would do well to solve some peoples' problems with more static places like how Proteus presented. Though, I utterly adore Proteus, so...

B-day's this week so I had some extra $$ and picked up Ori. Man, you know a game is good when you're into the game before the main menu pops up. The music is so good.

Game is absolutely beautiful and the animations are so fluid.

What was the general consensus here? I know the OT is pretty much unanimously positive

I loved it. A few of the chase sequences can get tiring after you fail a few times, but it's hard to stay mad when the rest of the game is so well made. I'm excited to go back and replay it sometime soon.

Any word on Capy's Below? Is that still looking like a 2015 release?

I am very much looking forward to Below. Played it a for awhile at PAX East 14'. Lots of interesting stuff going regarding design around movement, inventory and combat.

Also the procedural level generation is top notch. Played 4 playthroughs and each had widely different environments. Well they all had the same texture stuffs, but pathing and geometry were way different.

Some more leftover impressions:

Siralim:

Well, color me surprised. This game is a Dragon Quest style Monster catching game and... surprisingly good. A lot of depth, mechanic and content here. I definitely will go back to this eventually.

Sorcery 3:

Great, great stuff. I absolutely love what they did with this series. If you like interactive story books or evocative writing in games, check this out. It is still really fascinating how many different possibilities they squeezed into these games.

Super Recoil Gun:
Small 2D platformer about navigating through recoil from your gun. Offers some neat ideas, but overall it feels a bit too samey after a while as the mechanics dont allow for much variety.

You can find a demo at the link. Definitely check it out whenever you have the time, guys. I havent played it quite enough yet to make a final statement on it, but first impressions are very, very good.

Damn, forgot about Sorcery. Added it to my Voting list, hope it's not too late. How many Serpents did you find/kill on your first playthrough, Toma?

Didnt finish it yet. Ashamedly, I also need to admit that I couldnt even end Sorcery 2 as I was stuck on the door and going back through all areas to find the stuff I was missing was inherently unappealing to me at that point. It was a bit of an incredibly weird design decision for game flow.

And to think it was originally a mobile game :p

Did you try it on mobile? I am still figuring out whether it might be worth grabbing it on mobile but its hard to tell how it would play.

I'll just quote it here

Thanks for the heads up! I bought and will post impressions in the next few days. If anyone has the time to throw up a properly formatted post until tomorrow, I'd appreciate it. :)

Ori...wow, just gorgeous. It's been a while since I've been sad knowing a game will end. The vibrant world and art style and fluid animations are outstanding. I didn't realize it was a metroidvania either, so that was a pleasant surprise

It's really good. That scene where you're
escaping the flooding tree
was so exhilarating in ways that so few games are.

It's not a proper spoiler really so it's a safe click.

Garden

Another of Daniel's games that hasn't quite clicked with me - probably since its closest neighbor is Haemo (the one game of his I don't like much.) Still; it controls well, looks and sounds nice but doesn't hit the heights of games like Javel-Ein or The Sun and Moon.

Icy

I'd echo what Toma said here:

"Niko: Through The Dream®" is a minimalist adventure accompanying Niko in her return to her world. We will travel through different islands, each of them being the oniric representation of an important event of her past. Happiness, solitude or fear melted with hidden riddles, you will face up dangers and traps and, with Niko, you will confront them with determination, ability and logic."

I have a question. Can I open a new thread talking about the game?
I dunno if its "legal" or not to do it in this forum.
The one making this game is a friend of mine.
Sure. No guarantee that people will comment, but I make threads all the time for Kickstarters and games I think look interesting

Also you might want to edit your post here about the game. Check out the format for Code 7 and TIS-100 on this page. Toma has a program that collects formatted posts for the monthly threads, so only posts that are properly formatted get included

We technically had a strict rule here about not self-advertising, but just mention in the thread that its an interesting project from a friend of yours and you should be fine (also editing the post as Baddy said).
