Indie Games 2015 [May] Now Voting - Post 348!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Campfire
Little musical toy. Not much behind it, but cute to play around with.

Carena
Top down destruction derby concept. The controls and scope dont allow for much finesse, which doesnt allow for much actual fun to be had.

Copycat
I am surprised that I like the challenge created through these simple mechanics and layout. Still overall not really enough depth though.

Crayon Poke
Sidescrolling puzzle game with a very unconvential "weapon" (LD theme). I liked it, because the level/puzzle design was surprisingly tricky at times.

Crypt of the Necrodancer
Others already said enough about it, I just agree with that :p Highly recommended.

Environmental Station Alpha
This game is so good. Extremely challenging Metroidvania with great controls, a marvellous sense of exploration and a good amount of content (~20+ hours). Good stuff.

Fathom
This:
Fathom: The game seems quite accomplished in a lot of areas but the core gameplay idea is only neat in theory. The fact that you're basically moving through molasses while having to redirect bullets (which you do a lot) lends the gameplay rhythm an irksome quality which should have been avoided. Since you're quite fragile and bullets come flying at you all the time, simultaneously giving you no real time to react, you're inclined to slow down time more often than you need. But then again you have to preempt projectiles so there's no easy solution here. While trying to look up the dev's portfolio, I read a small post-mortem on the game in which he addresses these issues so it seems he's well aware and hopefully working on a revision.

Post impressions, guys,

Catlateral Damage - $9.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
Iuugihh.gif

http://www.catlateraldamage.com/

Catlateral Damage is a first-person destructive cat simulator where you play as a cat on a rampage, knocking as much of your owner's stuff onto the ground as possible. It's a highly original, experimental concept that was born out of a game jam. Oh, and it's based on a real-life mischievous cat, Nippy!

On sale for $8.99

Fathom - Very well made for a Jam entry, the main gameplay element is interesting

Grimstorm - The artstyle is interesting but I think it should do a better job showing the doors to the other rooms (or maybe that was the dev intention). The controls are simple, one buttom to attack and you can deffend by holding down and it's an important element in the combat. I usually like these sidescrolling games but lately I'm not in the mood to play another one

The Rock the Paper and the Scissors - This was a big surprise for me, as the name clearly suggest it's a rock, paper, scissors game with a wild west theme though you can't just input the commands because the enemies follow a rhythim pattern and you must drop their health to zero before they finish the pattern otherwise they regain health.

Don't know when it was added, but Catacomb Kids has a portal spell now and it's amazing. You can shoot magic through the portals as well. That's how I killed myself actually. Set portals in a room, launched a tornado and then the tornado kept tearing through the room, getting more powerful until my hammer got ripped from my hands and killed me.

I am super super super on the fence about that one. One one hand it looks like a total one note joke game that might get old mega fast, but on the other I really appreciate destruction in all its forms and I had a real good time with the demo/alpha. Arrggg, choices.

Just wanted to say that NOT A HERO is really fun. I had a good time messing around in my first playthrough, but I'm having even more fun now that I'm trying to go for the various in-game objectives.

For anyone who isn't in the know, NAH is a 2D cover shooter where your goal is to get a time traveling purple bunny elected as Mayor of Britain. You need to successfully clean up the streets of drug dealers and ninjas, because ninjas are totally a problem in the area. You get a choice of 9 or so characters with different play styles, so you can mix it up quite a bit as you play.

Initial maniac/i don't give a fuck playthrough might take 4 hours or less, but going for all the mission objectives will require around 10 or so hours. It's a surprising amount of fun. NAH is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

PS. Cletus is a boss.

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Not much I can say about this that hasn't already been said by everyone else in the thread. It's fantastic, looks, plays and sounds great. Definitely one of the indie highlights of the year so far.

Dirty Bomb

I want to like this a lot but, knowing the discussions that go on behind the scenes, it feels like they're caught between a rock and a hard place on a number of systems. It's a pretty confused game but one that has a lot of potential to be good.Fingers crossed - it's open beta next week so you guys should check it out (if you're into team based FPS games that is.)

Environmental Station Alpha

I only played the demo of this but it was good then and I can only assume much better now. Extremely tough metroidvania that handles like a dream.

Titan Souls

Again, I only played the demo of this - first the free prototype and then the post-Develover demo and it impressed me both times. I worried about how that might translate over into a £10 game and whether or not it could justify the price tag, but that's for someone else to decide. What I did play was good; the right mix of Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus (which we all know is the best game ever created.)

I'll be back with more impressions later after I've played a few more bits and bobs.

Crypt of the NecroDancer
Not sure what else I could say about this that hasn't been said. It's a fantastic mix of roguelike and rhythm game and just a blast to play

Sorcery 3
Inkle continues to knock it out of the park with their interactive fiction series. Sorcery 3 is their biggest game yet, an open world across two timelines, with multiple bosses, and incredible depth. You'll only barely scratch the surface after one playthrough.

Environmental Station Alpha
An excellent metroidvania, with a sprawling map that's fun to discover, tight controls, challenging gameplay, and a ton of content

Zenzizenzic
Only played the early beta of this, but that's enough to make me hyped for the full game. Zenzizenzic is wild abstract art in motion, a spectacle of colors and shapes and patterns. The two-weapon system allows for a variety of loadouts and the gameplay is extremely hectic. Definitely worth a look if you're a fan of shooters and shmups

Wizard of Legend
Still relatively early in development, but the main draw here - magic based arena combat - is fun already. The spells feel powerful and the pixel art is well done. I'm eager to see how this progresses

A Knife Made Of Whispers
Yet another fun game from Daniel Linssen. An action platformer where you must carry around a lantern to illuminate the levels, the twist bring you can only attack enemies while within the lantern's light. It's relative simple compared to some of his other games, but still a fun game and worth checking out.

Titan Souls
Only played the recent demo of this, but I wasn't very impressed. While the art style was nice, the gameplay itself just felt lacking. It may have been inspired by Shadow of the Colossus but Titan Souls' boss battles have none of the thrill or intensity. And for a game that's decidedly arcadey in nature, having to run back to a boss after dying gets annoying really fast

We've finally released Clandestinity of Elsie on itch.io!

5VCr9mi.png

We've also put it up on Greenlight and have been getting a good vote ratio (at least it says it's good when compared to the top 50), so now I'm thinking it's a matter of exposure. (Which may not be so easy with my non-existent marketing skills.)

It remains to be seen if releasing during exam period was a good idea. -.-

Treeker: The Lost Glasses - $7.49

I just beat it this afternoon. It's a decent first person platformer with nice visuals. The lens effect kind of takes away from the visuals, which is unfortunate. It took about 2 hours to complete, and it seems like there's more content coming for free. I'd recommend waiting for a sale/bundle or for more content patches.

GAF, I'd do unspeakable things for a mobile port of Hexcells.

That would be nice. I'd do unspeakable things for Hexcells 4.

Yep, great games :)
Definitely one of the best "pure" puzzle games I played in the past few years. Actually, it might just be outright the best, since I cant think of one from the top of my head that I consider better.

So I hooked up a 360 controller and at long last was finally able to enjoy Outer Wilds as it was meant to be enjoyed, aka with a gamepad and not a slideshow

And it only made my hype for the expanded and improved version grow. I just love the little details so much. The tutorial disguised as optional challenges that add texture to the world (zero-g cave, flying the model ship). The strange artifacts in the museum. The interactivity of your ship, from using the monitor and needing to manually suit up. Shooting off a probe and touching down on a weird planet gives me strong Interstellar vibes.

Well, Prison Architect is coming to iPad, so that kind of game could work on a tablet.

Prison Architect is no Dwarf Fortress, though.

But its a decent substitution, yeah.

Updated Current Voting in No particular Order - several ludlum shorts but well worth a look

Ridiculous amount of free content to try this month - i've easily reached ten games to vote on and still have another twenty(now seven) that i wanted to try but only picked the browser based games first.

Ten Games of The Month

Badass Inc. - A point and click short with some arcade action, stylish graphics and audio – an expanded version could be an instant hit.

Blink Gun -

Copycat -

Souls of the Fallen - So you've reached the end of your journey you need to defeat the end level boss in a single screen action platformer – small pixel art style – nice mechanics and controls – would love to see this expanded into a full game.

Fathom -

Iridescent -

Mass-X - Another ludlum dare entry where a button press swaps your location with enemies, pixel graphics, zingy audio whats not to like

Nuclear Autumn - Clever little puzzle platformer, nice pixel graphics with tight controls and audio that adds to the atmosphere

Super Recoil Gun - Hardcore shooter, use your gun like a rocket to move oh and die lots

Wizard of Legend - Action rogue like still in early development (with co-op) – if this game continues to build on its foundations with the same quality it will be one to watch out for

Worth a look

BitGun -
Crayon Poke - A nice little browser game with functional graphics and sound. User crayons to create platforms
Out Of Mind - Turn out the lights turn up the volume and run, atmospheric short that will set your anxiety on edge for at least a short while
ScarKrow -
Theropods - A point and click adventure from the stone age with simple screen by screen puzzles
Garden - Really like the art style, not really sure whats going on and the controls will take a fair bit of getting used to.
Underground Hangovers - Nice basic pixel graphics and looks like there is more of a game hidden there just didnt have the time to play longer

Avoid

Bloodbath Kavkaz - Picked this up in a bundle - would have felt ripped off if it was free
Flail Rider - Still a developmental build – at present the controls are difficult and what looks like instant collision death makes the experience a funless one

Notable Paid Releases - Never got a chance to play these due to lack of funds but well worth looking up.

Environmental Station Alpha - $7.99 (WIN\MAC)
Finding Teddy 2 - $14.99 (PC, Mac)

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Technobabylon and Badland already have posts.

Thanks for letting us know. It would be great if we remove the games that have been posted a second time. Otherwise I might not notice that I post them multiple times in the next thread (@titch).
