Does Quantum Break Manage To Set A New Graphical Benchmark On The Xbox One?

Is Quantum Break, with its meld of compelling gameplay, strong storyline and high-quality TV series, really the future of gaming? Yes, but maybe it'll be Quantum Break 2 (if there is one) that truly nails it 100%. If they dial back the gorgonzola, the product placement and adjust that cover mechanic, this could have been a perfect game.

But, for now, you've got the best-looking game on Xbox One, jam-packed full of familiar faces and top-notch acting, complemented by strong gameplay mechanics and a popcorn-crunching TV series.

It’s too bad the experience is disrupted by the crashes, and I wish Remedy would learn how to deal with repetitious content. That was a big complaint with Alan Wake, and it has come around again. But it’s not as bad in this game. It didn’t annoy me that much, but I think it will drive some people to just go and watch the game on YouTube playthroughs, rather than deal with playing it themselves.

But the story is quite elaborate, the human character animations are outstanding, the performances are great, and there are some real moving moments in the game. Greg Louden of Remedy told me, “Most games you play through once and forget. Quantum Break and Alan Wake and Max Payne are games you remember.

Quantum Break is another example of Remedy Entertainment sticking to what they know, and doing it better than anyone else. An engrossing adventure with a captivating story. experimentation with new mediums for telling stories in games and refined third-person gameplay to match. Quantum Break isn’t optional, it’s essential.

GamingTrend 9/10
Remedy swung for the fences and hit a homerun with Quantum Break. With an engrossing story, an amazing cast, and the most beautiful visuals on the Xbox One we’ve ever seen, Quantum Break is a masterpiece.

Although I really had fun with it, but I lack in comparison to other current titles of variety. The possibilities of time manipulation are underused, puzzles there are almost no, and if you want the whole story, some really long texts must endure blank (Beth's notebook), but sometimes contain important information.

The Jimquisition - 8.5/10
Quantum Break is not the most revolutionary of games, and its box of time toys cover what is, at heart, a fairly standardized shooter. However, it carries itself with style and speed to create something genuinely fascinating to play, flavored by a story that, while failing to pay off in the final stretch, is more detailed and engrossing than most in its league.

Destructoid - 8.5/10
It's a disappointing realization, but not a damning one. Far from it, actually. Remedy's keen understanding of how to make an action title shines through, and it's every bit a game that has been lovingly crafted for years. Quantum Break won't at all times feel like a game, as the player spends a fair chunk of time relegated to spectator. But, no matter which side Quantum Break is showing, it's always going to be a spectacular one.

GameInformer 8.5
Quantum Break isn’t a perfect game; it’s a bold experiment in how two mediums can tell a larger story, and at times it pays off. It would be foolish for every game to attempt to emulate this form of storytelling, but Quantum Break as a gaming oddity deserves attention. I wish the events of the show were more significant to the main story, but Quantum Break more than makes up for that with some of the best storytelling and gameplay Remedy has ever produced.

Remedy has, without a doubt, crafted a very creative title with Quantum Break. It’s not going to be the killer exclusive game that so many were looking for with the Xbox One, but it’s definitely been worth the wait. Story gamers will especially delight in replaying the game multiple times to see the various episodes and experience the different paths the game itself can take. For anyone with an Xbox One, Quantum Break is a must-own.

Quantum Break is a game I think a lot of people are going to enjoy as it’s highly innovative as well as visually unique. It also includes great performances from familiar faces, a wealth of interesting ideas and memorable gameplay that is as stylish as it is approachable. Basically, it’s everything needed to satisfy a broad demographic while still engaging more scrutinous players with a compelling science fiction narrative that’s actually based on plausible scientific theory. I have great respect for any developer that tries to do something different, even if it doesn’t always work. And yes, there are some things in Quantum Break that don’t always execute that well, but it’s hardly a deal breaker. Ultimately, it’s a solid game with good replay value, a lot of memorable moments, and is, without a doubt, a must-play for Xbox/PC owners.

VGTime 8/10 Chinese
Some of my thoughts since the majority of you won't read my Chinese review:

First of all, let me throw the negatives out of the way. The controls have some really nasty issues, like the janky aiming animation and the inconsistency with some details like ejected casings, some interactive bits require tight positioning, coped with the suboptimal animation sometimes it's very frustrating.

But what QB delivered for me is how it masterfully delivers its narratives across levels, live-action shows and collectibles. I love watching the story unfold, love the differences subtle or significant I found when replaying the levels via different choices.

And the combat, while not anything revolutionary, worked well with the shooting mechanics and time based powers, it's not very skillful, not that difficult, but it feels awesome and badass.

As a full package, QB probably lacks what keeps players coming back for very long, but if you like to explore, like to see a story unfold, QB might be right up your alley.

Positives
Time-based powers is a blast to use
The graphics... is this real life?
The humour in the notes and emails
Great use of known actors

Negatives
Remove the live action movies and CG cutscenes and you have a short gameplay session at hand
Junction decisions don't impact the game THAT much
Streaming video footage... meh...

A Max Payne I play today like hell, so dense is the atmosphere, so awesome the Remedy invention called Bullet Time. Alan Wake is indeed playful weaker but concerns me by its bizarre horror atmosphere also long after the console or PC is off. Quantum Break it? This is easily digestible action fast food, so quickly forgotten as it is consumed.

Buy It If: You want a fairly brisk third person action game, with unique combat, an ambitious structure and a story focus, even if you don’t mind that story being quite messy.

Avoid It If: The idea of watching 20 minute TV episodes in between your play sounds disruptive, and you expect to be swept up in a resonant and always coherent story.

Sadly, Quantum Break's gameplay is essentially divided equally between combat and hapless environment traversal. Given that the entire campaign can be completed in less than 10 hours--live-action episodes included--the distribution of activities feels that much more disappointing. Even if you go back and change your decisions--such as preventing a character from dying--your path essentially remains the same, albeit with a few minor elements remixed to hint at your agency over its plot.

Gamekult.com - 6/10
- Pacing issues
- TV series is mediocre
- Forgettable story
- Long loading times
- French dubbing is a mixed bag

Metro.Co.Uk - 6/10
Pros: The combat may lack nuance and variety but it’s fast-paced and entertaining. Generally good graphics and solid acting from all concerned.
Cons: The plot and characters are far too ordinary to need all the 20-minute live action cut scenes. Villain decisions make too little difference and the gameplay is repetitive and overly easy.

Giant Bomb - 2/5
On one hand, Quantum Break fits perfectly into Remedy's timeline, representing something grander and more cinematic than the fake TV shows and other ambitious little elements that have worked their way into the studio's past work. But it's probably telling that I was way more excited to watch Quantum Break's fake in-game TV show on various TVs found around the edges of the game than the one that was actually produced and shoved into the middle of the action.

Time - 2/5
Could we change the past if we had time machines? Should you give Quantum Break a go? Choose wisely, because in real life, time’s arrow points one-way only.

ibtimes - 2/5
What may seem like an ambitious project is in the fact the combination of a standard third-person shooter and the kind of cheap sci-fi drama you might find in the darkest corners of Sky TV. Visually tepid and filled with abortive gunfights and platforming, Quantum Break also struggles to contain its plot, while at the same time underselling its characters. Remedy's previous games have been characterised by a distinctive tone and knowing humour. By comparison Quantum Break is a glossy, charmless, wholly moderate outing.

GamerSyde
On the upside
+ A unique game in the genre.
+ The time powers we can use in the gunfights.
+ The voice acting. Excellent in both the game and TV series.
+ A simple story on the surface but is much deeper than it appears.

On the downside
- Rather short game
- Lack of enemy variety
- Various weapons have too much recoil rendering them unusable
- The loading times

EuroGamer (GermanDutch)
It's won't be regarded as a classic a few years down the line, but Quantum Break offers tight, mind-bending gameplay and impressive visuals.

Cons
gfx presentaion is not very solid. Blurry, odd graphical errors,
bugs

Scratch away at that and you've got a watchable TV series wrapped around a focussed and competent game, but Remedy's keen sense of style manages to elevate Quantum Break to something just about worthwhile. Maybe it's because of how eccentric the whole enterprise is. There's never been anything like Quantum Break, and it's hard to imagine there ever being anything like it again: more often for better than for worse, Remedy's strange hybrid feels like an adventure out of its own time.

Kotaku
Despite how pedestrian some aspects of the game may be, I concluded Quantum Break feeling like something new had happened. Something special had happened that more than compensated for some of the flatness of the story and the mostly rote gunplay. A game simply never worked like this before, nor has a TV show. Because of that, what might have otherwise been ordinary feels extraordinary.

Wired.Co.Uk
Quantum Break is equal parts curiosity, mad experiment, and beautiful dream. It's legitimately entertaining, even if it's all a bit, well, schlocky. It should be lauded for what it tries to do, for its attempts at evolving interactive storytelling, for its ambition. It's a perfect fit for Xbox One too, a reflection of the console's own hybridised approach to media. But for all its potential, the game can't quite time jump out of the mire of being, at its core, a shooter with some fancy quirks to it.

CNET
THE GOOD Quantum Break features a spectacular set of special effects and in-game visuals. The game's time powers are undeniably cool. The TV show element provides a unique experience that connects the game's complex story.
THE BAD Although pretty to look at, a lot of the game's action feels repetitive and uninspired. The TV show might not be for everyone.
THE BOTTOM LINE Quantum Break is a unique videogame/live-action TV show hybrid that features dazzling visual effects and presentation. Even though its gameplay falls a bit short the whole package is probably worth experiencing -- just maybe not at full price.

My review is up:

Gadgets 360 - 8/10: http://gadgets.ndtv.com/games/reviews/quantum-break-review-820521

"With astounding production values, powerful story-telling, and rewarding combat, Quantum Break is a stellar game. But due to an underdeveloped upgrade system and poorly thought out content delivery that demands heavy bandwidth, it isn't exactly a game we can recommend to everyone wholeheartedly. Make no mistake though, if you have the means to play it as it was meant to be, it's worth experiencing. "

My review http://www.savingcontent.com/2016/04/01/quantum-break-review/

4 out of 5

Remedy continues to innovate in mixing high octane, refined action elements with intense and well done story elements that build their worlds up like no other. From a shooting game standpoint, Remedy is sticking to what core story driven games usually provide.  Linear, point A. to B. with scripted elements, battles, and sometimes explorative elements. Fundamentally the gameplay from that perspective can feel almost archaic or old school.  Yet with the time powers, the visuals that encompass the gameplay, the live action, and the world building, they push the game above others and the elements combined with the shooting mechanics. Combat that also provides excitement, fun, and replayabilty, even after the story has been played out to boredom with players, the combat and visual spectacle will continue to bring folks back to it again and again. Time may be fucked, but in Quantum Breaks case, that might not be such a bad thing.

Jeff doesn't like linear third person shooters. Likely would have rated last of us similarly as he said he never could get through it.
