Holy crap, have you tried browsing the Internet without Adblock Plus?

One of the big issues with something ike GAF Gold is what it does to moderation; particularly the subjective moderation that doesn't explicity violate a rule.

I don't use it and I don't recommend it because I work as a content creator on Youtube and Adblock stops the revenue of my work in other words if one viewer has Adblock I generate 0$

The best place AdBlock comes in handy is YouTube, hate their stupid ads. Praise the non existent Lord for AdBlock, if only for YouTube.

Edit: sorry guy above me lol, if it helps I probably have never seen one of your vids anyways.

But how often are you on the homepage?

I usually just click on Off Topic from my history and skip it entirely.

When I first load into the site. Not saying there's anything wrong with the ads, just that the front page site tends to have these massive scrolling ads in the background and I was replying to riotous about what the home page tends to look like. Also, while adding it to my favorites bar or puling up history would avoid that front page, I tend to also be lazy. :p

I don't really get the point of them. Google/Website owner give me a bunch of free shit and I allow other people to pay them for it. As long as you don't try to give me viruses or take over my computer, we're straight.

If a 30 second YouTube ad really fucks with your life that much, get YouTube Red. GAF and other websites probably should offer premium options but don't be a douche if they don't.

I waste so much time browsing Youtube on mobile because of ads.

gaf gold subscriptions?

I've been wondering what that gif means for a while now. "played yourself"? As in, playing the role of you in an act? Tricking yourself? Something else?

Our work computers are relatively underpowered and Adblock makes an unbelievable difference to the actual user experience in terms of how much quicker and smoother the pages render. YouTube comes to mind but the NYTimes is particularly bad, despite being a predominantly text-based website.

GAF is an exception as it actually keeps it to a minimum but some websites take the liberties.

Gosh, if only NeoGAF could manage to have objective moderation.

lol, you know what I mean.

Someone clearly breaks a rule that's objective; like if I post porn, or an explict ad hominem attack. Lots of other moderation here is much more subjective and not based on a clearly broken rule.

I think NeoGAF is well moderated; I'm just saying you start charging people and them getting banned from a service they pay for becomes a bigger deal. And on the flip side; as a site owner banning a paying member is going to be a more difficult decision. At least that's how I'd see it.

I use Adblock but I have GAF on whitelist and never gotten any intrusive and annoying ads when I browse. If one does come across some, they usually report it to a moderator or EviLore.

Yeah, that could completely change bans on the site. Can you actually ban someone paying for a monthly service? I'd assume ToS would need to be updated to account for that, with verbage similar to that of an MMO with a monthly sub and you couldn't perm someone if they kept their sub going. I'd totally pay for access to the site, but it being maintained on an ad based system seems to be better for the community.

You certainly CAN; happens all the time on services like Xbox Live.

But they also have a much more extensive TOS, a fleet of paid employees monitoring and responding to reported issues (and extensive abuse reporting systems) and all kinds of ways for a customer to contact them to complain or get their account re-instated. Outside of cheating it's unlikely you'll lose permenant access to Live.

It complicates things though; expectations change all around and it beceoms a different decision for the admins for sure.

I whitelist sites some sites on desktop with Safari Adblock, I am proud to say that among those whitelisted are Digg, NeoGAF, and of course 4chan.

But mobile is getting increasingly hostile and annoying, and though I have a whitelist, it is diminutive compared to the desktop one. Might have to go full blockage on mobile should it ever get bad enough. Redirects, app openings, and tracking need to stop.

The only ad on GAF that sticks out in my memory is Gay Chubby Dating.

Aren't' ads based off your search history?

Though, I'm not sure how much truth there is to that as I have Battleborn and T-Mobile ads all the time on the splash-page and I've never looked at or used/played any of those things.

Mobile ads are pretty terrible on GAF though, I get constant redirects to the app store without having clicked on any portion of the ad.

You know YouTube has a service for that now right?

In some countries. They won't sell Youtube Red to me even though I'd gladly pay for it. I don't like skipping ads because I want the guys who make the content to make some cash off my views, but with more and more 2 minute+ ads I'm more and more likely to press that button. If all ads were a minute or less I'd never skip them, but it seems like pushing the limits as to what viewers will put up with is the thing to do these days.

Can confirm they're based off search history. I was searching for a new monitor, the next 3 days the adds were all for that brand of monitor lol.

Right now I've got a giant htc Vive add at the bottom of my phone since I have their store page open in another tab.

What's been annoying me recently is on mobile, GAF now has these really big ads down the bottom of the page. What's up with those?

Weird cause I only use gaf on this phone and got 50% of the page ads for tacos. ..

I want a taco now ; (

I'm going to be honest, I've never been bothered by ads enough to want to block them. I dunno I like supporting sites I like without having to pay anything. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Perhaps logged into a google account or something?

Als I do too man :(
Shouldn't be. It's a company phone and besides GAF I've maybe opened CNN a time or two before instantly closing it.

Well I also clicked a spoilers link to a porn site (thanks GAF >.>) which posted corn stuff on the first of April.
Maybe that's why.

Corn porn = tacos

I don't think I've ever used it and I probably never will. The more people who use adbockers, the more obtrusive ads will get in order to make up for that lost revenue.

I wish there was a better way to monetize internet content than ads. Ads are just the worst. And it's a horrible cycle:

Ads are annoying -> People use Adblock -> Ads get more annoying because fewer people are seeing them now so they need to resort to more extreme measures to get people to click on them -> More people use Adblock -> Ads get REALLY annoying -> Even MORE people use Adblock

And so on and so on.

I wouldn't mind ads if it weren't for things like:

- Ads with sound that automatically start playing when the page loads
- Ads that slow my browser down or even crash it
- Ads that deliver malware
- Ads that are unnecessarily flashy and distracting
- Ads on Youtube that are like 3 minutes long and unskippable

But these things do exist, so I feel like Adblock is pretty much necessary to browse the internet.

I whitelist GAF, but not a whole lot else.

Question, though: If I never click on the ads, does GAF still get paid?

I honestly do not see the need to use adblockers. Leaving aside the fact that blocking ads undermines almost the entire economy of the Internet (and the vast majority of people also does not want to pay anything for content), most websites that I use have reasonable ads. The websites that go overboard with intrusive ads are usually websites with low or declining popularity, probably because of the ads.

On Mac and iOS I have had not a single bad experience with malware. And avoiding download-me-an-click-on-winner.exe malware is really not a big deal.

Yeah twitch ads are the worst for me.

Also, I love your avatar.

Let's be real though: you gotta have Adblock or equivalent for porn. I don't know why on porn sites it seems so acceptable for 90s level pop ups and redirects or random hijacks. For whatever reasons it's accepted and you have to walk on egg shells when visiting any link.

Its cause the only ad companies willing to advertise on porn sites are the shady ones.

GAF ads continuously try to get me to hook up with Muslim and Asian women

Evilore what does this mean

There Is a thread about it the mobile ads before weren't doing shit so Evil is testing out these new ads, more and more people are using adblock for neogaf so he's trying to find ways to pay the bills.

Isnt this a self defeating cycle? Make the Ads bigger, more people will use adblock?

The ads have become ridiculously big on the mobile version. It ain't nice.

I'll be one of those people and say I don't mind the big mobile ads, or the skins that the site sometimes gets on my desktop. I came from GameFAQs, that shit was an every day thing for me.

Keep doing you Evilore.
