The Story
-------------

(Briefly summarized/translated)

It's been a year since the "missing 10 billion yen" incident.

The death of Toujoukai President Terada Yuo brings Kiryu back to the Toujoukai. With the letter that Yuo left before his death in hand, Kiryu sets out to Kansai to save the Toujoukai.

What is waiting there is the man called the strongest gangster, "The Kansai Dragon," Gouda Ryuji; and a detective lady called "The Yakuza Hunter," Sayama Kaoru, chief of the prefecture police.

A struggle for power and control begins on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka between those without forgiveness.

The past of Kamuro-cho, and the Toujoukai, "the unspoken incident"...
The sorrow, fury, and hate that's hidden there...
After 20 years, the revenge that will take place...

What fate awaits Kiryu?
What is the truth to the hidden past?

The one to rule Kamuro-cho, will it be Kanto? or Kansai? !!

A yakuza ps3 would be better. But since it's on the Ps2 means the US version would have shitty english voices but no space for the original voices.

I really, really hope this comes over, otherwise I'll let my limited Japanese knowledge do the trick. Loved Yakuza, this looks to be even better.

when does japanese developers lern to stream data on ps2? yakuza 1 had horrible load times.

if i was sega, i would relaunch the 2 game as one on the PS3 and X360 done NG sigma style with original set of voice and a more polished fighting section (especially animation).

From what I've seen from people playing. It seems the loading times are MUCH better.

Oh man, that would be awesome. It was so hard adjusting to the lengthy load times in the original.

I wish. That said it's super awesome (?) that they can churn out a sequel with more stuff in a year - hope the story ain't gimped.

Otherwise they are dressed for surpreme bad-assness. Sweeeeeeet. Really hoping that Yakuza 2 makes it stateside.

will the NA version have Japanese voices with English subtitles?

I think Sega should save money and NOT hire actors for dubing over-priced voice actors in English with f bombs. Give us Japanese Voice with English subtitles and we will be alot happyer and Sega won't need to over-pay Hollywood cream puffs

Just so you know, I have the best avatars ever.
Dear Sega,

Please don't give me another reason to be disappointed in you/cry. Bring this game to the West.

Ryu Ga Gotoku goes to Kansai = ****ing awesome. They better hit my favorite spots in town: Shinsaibashi and Namba in Osaka, and ****ing Sannomiya in Kobe. Kobe is Yakuza territory.

From what I've seen of the screens, the game looks HEAVILY based on Shinsaibashi.

Gouda Ryuiji is called the Kansai Dragon? Awesome. His VA better ****ing speak kansai ben.

About 20k.

You're kidding. That sucks. I'd heard it had bombed but that's a lot worse than I'd thought.

I'd like to know the European numbers. IIRC it did break into the full price UK top 20, but it only hung around a couple of weeks.

Yeah, hopefully Europe embraced the game better. It's a real shame. :(

They should go to Kyoto and try to take Hiroshi Yamauchi's turf.

They best check themselves, before they wreck themselves.

I was just reading an interview with the comic book writers Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker, and they're talking about how because of the concept, they're obligated to pick up Yakuza at some point. These are guys who are obsessed with crime drama, so they're going to get the game for sure, despite being casual gamers who wouldn't have heard about the game otherwise. This game should have been promoted on/in every television show, comic book, anything with strong ties to organized crime, and I think it would have done much better than it did. As it stands, I think I saw an ad in Tips and Tricks, a magazine that, judging by the letters section, doesn't have the most grown-up audience.

But hey, it's Sega we're talking about. If bringing over Ryu Ga Gotoku 2 would be a bad decision, that's probably 100% confirmation for a U.S. release.

I still can't believe I'll be playing a sequel just a year after the original. Sega must've been working on both at or around the same time near the first game's completion.

Anyway, other than the Kansai setting and music, I'm most excited about the host bar mini game. Also, has there been any word on a Ryu Ga Gotoku OST? I've even been trying different things to do a rip of the original game's audio since last year, but it just doesnt sound right. If there isnt an OST release, I hope Sega implements the option to change sound effect volume..

:lol Wicked.

I may consider this... by the way, there isn't an option for Japanese voice/English subs in the US/EU original is there?

Ryu ga gotoku got 38/40 from famitsu!

They love the game, 3 more days!!!!

I put up some wall papers for you guys from the official site, check the end of the first post.

Hopefully Yakuza did poorly enough in the states to warrant them still bringing it over, but not putting too much money in things like say...a dub nobody wants:D Translate that shit only, being cheap can be greatly beneficial, Sega!

I've spent the day playing this game. Here are some initial impressions, and keeping spoilers to a minimum.

The game begins with fairly lengthy introduction sequence of movies. Already from these movies Ryu ga Gotoku 2 has reached MGS level in terms of presentation, direction, and atmosphere. The game extrudes manliness, this is a game made for adults afterall. One of the scene shows a character sitting at his house with nothing on the floor except card board boxes, a huge set of really expensive amp and record player, and walls of records placed on the shelfs. I can only say that Nagoshi has taste. After the intro sequence, we see Kiryu heading to the cemetary to pay respect to his lost friends (from Ryu1). At this point, you can watch a sequence of optional recaps for the first game. It's not required, but Nagoshi has done a great job in summarizing the first game while giving insight into what Kiryu sees from his perspective of the events in the first game. Not a waste of time at all. Something happens here and Kiryu is once again drawn back into the world of yakuzas.

Combat - They've added alot of new elements into the battles, especially boss battles. First and foremost, is the addition of the 360 direction attacks; basically a fancy word for switching direction on the fly in midcombo. This is a welcoming addition, but the AI has also been readjusted to make it harder to exploit this new feature. It is still recommended to sway and move to a position where you are not surrounded by enemies. One thing that I've noticed is that if you hold down the lock on button, sometimes it really messes up the tracking of attacks if the person you were locked onto is knocked down or dead. It's something that will make you learn to use a good variation of non lock on movement and lock on shuffling. That's the way the game is meant to be played anyways. New heat attacks have been added, and it is possible to grab people's legs while they are on the ground. The heat gauge has also been upgraded so it is possible to stay in heat mode longer. They also added small bits of QTE events during battle sequences where Kiryu sometimes will use his surrounding to his advantage. In boss battles, there is a new type of heat attack where you start mashing R2 as quickly as possible when the boss is knocked down, to charge up and unleash a really strong heat attack in a short cut scene. The boss can also do this to you but it is possible to avoid the attack through QTE sequence. There are other new kinds of techniques but I've yet to learn them from powering up or through the NPC's.

Graphics - The slow downs from the demo are all gone. ryu2 really improved on the overall presentation from the first game. The facial detail is stunning during cut-scenes, used to a dramatic effect to convey the subtle emotions of each character. NPC's have mostly been improved as well, even the enemies now look visually distinct. The painful expression of the enemies adds so much to the fun of beating their faces in :) Load times have been dramatically reduced even before battle. The game goes into battle right away and shows Kiryu getting ready to fight with the name of the enemy group superimposed on the screen while the game stream the data in, so you are never waiting at a black screen for the random battles. Loading still exist going from cut-scenes to cut-scenes. While it's not as bad as before, it is still frequent. If the next one is on PS3 then caching through the HD would be a great help. Also, this is a game simply not meant to be played on HD tv's.

Music/Sound - The game is pretty familiar to the first in this respect. Aside from some new tracks for the battles, so you're not always hearing the same track. The dramatic music tracks from the first game all return to give that same level of excitement during those quick paced events. No complaints here.

Overall, people who have played the first game will really be right at home with this one. The script of the story is once again top class. The cut-scenes are superbly done, in many cases better than the first game. The facial details really adds so much to the cut-scenes. A heavy portion of the speech is in Kansai accent, so even Japanese speakers might be a bit hindered. It's simply amazing the kind of work Sega did for the voice work in this game. This is a sequel that feels so similar to the original, while offering many many new and fresh elements that you slowly discover. I have just reached the point where you can become a host, it's probably something that will suck alot of time away.

Fans of the game just shouldn't miss this one.
