UK :

Ubisoft and Namco-Bandai welcome us back to the stage of history, ensuring that “the soul still burns” as ‘SoulCalibur IV’ debuts this week at No1 in the All Formats Chart.
It is the first All Formats No1 for the SoulCalibur franchise since ‘SoulCalibur II’ (GC, PS2 and Xbox) reached the summit for one week, back in September 2003. It has been almost 3 years since ‘SoulCalibur III’ was launched, only on PS2. Released on Xbox 360 and PS3 the long-anticipated sequel is the fastest selling in the franchise with the PS3 version outselling it’s PS2 predecessor’s launch week by more than 3 to 1. It is the fastest selling traditional beat-em up game to be launched on either PS3 or Xbox 360 (56% of sales were on Microsoft’s format) and marks a mini-revival for the genre after the recent success of Nintendo’s ‘Super Smash Bros. Brawl’ on Wii. Nintendo however have put up a good fight; despite dropping down to No2, ‘Wii Fit’ sales are up 35% on last week and sales of ‘Mario Kart Wii’, a non-mover at No3, are up 25%.
THQ’s ‘Wall-E’ drops 2 places to No4 – sales are slowing 3 weeks after the release of the film. THQ however can celebrate a strong showing from the hardware-bundled ‘Big Beach Sports’, up from No10 to No5, while former No1 ‘Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures’ moves in the opposite direction down from No5 to No10.

I expect Nintendomination to be ever-so-slightly spoiled this week with Soul Calibur IV taking the top spot. At least in the UK, that is.

Hey this is a cool thing you've started. I'd like to do some charts for this. Are there ever any hardware numbers?

Only through occasional PR statements, IIRC. :(

Started ? it's been like 8 months now :p

And now, there are barely any data, just top 40/20/10

So it's like "this is what's popular in these various european countries" but no way of knowing how much each game sold? Isn't that like buying a Wii to watch DVDs?

Yes, kinda. The pr statement for the UK will often hint at something (if one cares to do the math), but otherwise we get nothing.

I think we get monthly charts of software sales with actual numbers for Italy.

I suppose we could count up the games that appear in each list for each system, and for how many weeks in a row they appear. That's something, I guess.

We could always make up some numbers if we get bored.

On combined certainly, but Wii Fit has had a whole week to sell and mildly increased shipments this week over the last two (anecdotal local evidence) so there's a good chance that it will outsell the PS3 on the units chart, and both on the value. Mario Kart has been continuing it's trend of increased stock too, I think Nintendo has gone all out to dominate the summer charts (by having old games in stock and one new title in SmashBros for the whole 2 months...).

That said SCIV is flipping fantastic and should sell by the bucket load.

Our Analysts have that covered :D

The ELSPA sales awards are the closest the UK has to real numbers, but as we get 3 separate top 40s and individual system charts to a similar depth with over 90% market sample sizes I quite like our data. :D

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
the nintendomination is so complete in europe that all the ads on this thread are Wii related -_-

Famitsu used to release monthly UK top ten charts with numbers, but we haven't gotten that in a while. We also get hardware from Italy now and then.

Posting early, same reason than last week (sorry Stop It :p). As usual, only NL, Norway Charts and next week's releases are available until tomorrow.
:(

Honestly, one day I will rush off to work because of you, only to find it closed, it will then rain and I will cry, ah well.

Anyway, as for the charts, SC4 out this week to.....a bit of fanfare, mainly in-store pushing, I think I may have seen an ad or two, but nothing major, expect the PS3 version to be close, if not ahead of the 360 version, because frankly, Vader > Yoda. (And the box-art looks better, and the Sixaxis is better for fighters).

Yes, just like last week, because I'll be off by the time UK charts are released. And since usually someone always ends up posting the new charts in the old thread, it's quite annoying :p So at least the thread will be ready.

@Stop It: Sorry mate, but look at the bright side of life. Now you see the PAL charts thread, and you know that you still have one day off :p

Very true, that said I just watched Hamilton get a puncture and lose any chance of winning the Hungarian GP, at least Massa went boom and Kovalainen won :p

Two games I expect to do very well this week and possibly steal a place or 2 is Guitar Hero on tour, as advertising has ramped up this week, and GH3 bundles, which went down to ~£50 this week to be replaced by GH:Aerosmith.

I have the same problem as Stop It... I wake up and find the new thread, and takes me sometime to realize what day is today...

By the way, Panther, Famitsu was releasing monthly top 10 with numbers for UK, but i don't know if they're still doing it.. But the best guy you could page for any european number is Captain Smoker...

Will be interesting to see if the Platinum hit titles can make a splash onto the charts. I have seen quite a few retailer brochures advertising those.

Scotland only (England & Wales get the last Monday in August off), shouldn't affect the charts coming out, but will make my job a bit quieter :)

that just shows how little of overall picture top 40 listing gives. Who would say that RCTOD and GH3 would go over 100k in UK? Both games barely charted.

Do you have some links? I always wondered how much the top 10 is generally in absolute sales units. It's a shame that we don't get regular numbers for the UK, like how we do get them for Japan, America, Canada and Australia (and Italy but that's not really interesting imo).

From their website

The official Leisure Software reports are published by ELSPA and compiled by Chart-Track, and cover retail sales made through the Chart-Track panel, which now accounts for 80-85% of the market. Data collected form nearly 5,500 retailers, produced directly from their EPoS (electronic point of sale) tills is supplied to Chart-Track every week. At the end of the reporting week, Saturday night, the data is consolidated, checked for consistency, and verified. The reports are then compiled on Monday, ready for distribution on a Tuesday. At the end of the month, quarter or year, these additional reports are run and become available a few days latter.

Dunno if they extrapolate or not. I know GfK doesn't for french charts, for instance.

Strange, you would think it would at least do comparible to the 360 version, or surpass it. Apparently not :) Maybe Guitar Hero On Tour has a shot if it keeps selling well for a couple of months

Not really, both games charted well when they were released at the back end of last year, and will have done most of their numbers then.

could it have something to do with guitar hero 2 being already available on x360? if you already have the guitar, it costs only as much as most nother games, not double

The UK market has grown rapidly over the past couple of years but its not up there with Japan just yet. However, the two are very different in terms of how titles perform. Budget games in the UK can sell very well week after week. Look at Simpson's Hit and Run on the PS2. Its one of the best selling games in the UK but the majority of those sales were as a platinum title.

thanks for the hard work... so RC charted once in all game charts and GHIII never charted, and yet both games went over 100k in UK.

So yes, casual games do sell a lot over long period of times, and no, top 40 charts dont tell a lot.

I got curious about how Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction charted in the UK Top 40 charts so i checked some earlier PAL Charts threads :) I can add to the list that you already posted that i checked the PAL Charts threads from week 45 in 2007 (thats the week when Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction was released) to week 6 in 2008 and i only saw R&C:ToD charted 1 time in the UK top 40, and that was in week 45 when the game was released. I did a search for "ratc" (without the " signs) in the threads and i couldnt see it in the UK Top 40 charts atleast (except in Week 45 when the game was released). I didnt check from week 7 and uptil week 31 though, so it might have charted sometimes in these weeks.

could it have something to do with guitar hero 2 being already available on x360? if you already have the guitar, it costs only as much as most nother games, not double
Yeah but in the US it was the same, yet the Wii version outsold it. GH also fits better to the Wii's audience (and PS2), more so then with the xbox360.

Indeed, that is the effect you get more with smaller markets. The difference between #10 and #40 isn't THAT much in absolute sales units. So if it stays at the low end of the charts constantly, it will still sell a lot and the ranking in the charts doesn't mean much in such a situation.

thanks for the hard work... so RC charted once in all game charts and GHIII never charted, and yet both games went over 100k in UK.

I was trying to find out how much bigger the Japanese market is compared to the UK.

UK 2007 - £1.72bn ~ Y366bn +26% on 2006
Japan 2007 - Y360.25bn ~ £1.69bn -1% on 2006

In the first half of the year software sales were up 42% on 2007 in the UK but can't find the info for Japan.

This comparison would be much better with units but last year was the first time the UK software market overtook the Japanese in terms of revenue and it looks to extend that lead massively this year.

Colour me surprised.

This is true, although we should take into account that in the US the 360 version was initially on top but consistency brought the Wii version to its current position. The Wii version has been charting better for a while now, so when it's all said and done I wouldn't be surprised to see the Wii version on top.

Strange, you would think it would at least do comparible to the 360 version, or surpass it. Apparently not :) Maybe Guitar Hero On Tour has a shot if it keeps selling well for a couple of months

We don't have the actual figures though. All we know is that the 360 version reached 200K by July and the Wii version reached 100K sometime ago. So it could be anywhere between 100K-200K currently.

Crossbow Training taking this long to hit 100k is a surprise for me. It was really in demand on launch (like most of the pack in games) and sold out fast, but when it came back in stock most gamers were no longer interested!

I expected SSB:B to be over 200k but I'm glad to see MGS4 made it, the PS3 needs a few bigger exclusive games to keep the market interest up. I can see both creeping to 300k before the year is out.

We knew M&S would make it to 1 million eventually, but before the Olympics actually starts? Not many would have predicted that. The DS version is creeping up to 600 too.

And finally, Mario Kart DS - 4th DS game to get Platinum and probably more likely than New SMB to go all the way to a Million.
