UK :

This week it’s a return to No1 for ‘Wii Fit’ (+32%) having lost out last week to ‘Lego Indiana Jones’.
THQ’s ‘Wall-E’ climbs 12% over last week but has to settle for No2 for a second successive week. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ climbs 23% to claim No3 and Activision Blizzard climb 7 places to No4 for the first full sales week of DS ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ (+46%). ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ drops from No1 to No5 (-15%) and a notable re-entry to the Top 10 is that perennial favourite ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ up 7 places to No9 (+14%).

Thanks for the thread.

Look at how short the Wii lead is in NL. doicare, enlighten us!

It'll be interesting to see how Soul Calibur does next week.

I'm really surprised that GH:OT actually charts. I know it's on DS and everything but seeing that GH isn't hugely popular in Europe it's quite strange.

Btw, for anyone interested, Amazon.de has it for 30 €, which is cheaper than a usual DS game.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

Yes, I know, it's only Sunday so nothing much to see here. I'll probably be off tomorrow by the time the UK charts are released, so at least the thread will be there.
In the meantime, enjoy the NL charts and next week's releases
I know, no one cares :p
Don't do that to me Raist, your PAL Charts are always my Monday mid afternoon respite from work, for a second there I thought I got the day wrong and I was in line for severe slapping.

Also: The Dutch trying to get a full Ninty top 10 before the UK? getting closer...

For me it would be very interesting to see how GH:OT does in Sweden, seeing as GH is HUGE over here while DS isn't doing nearly as well as in most other European countries. But yeah, no charts until the end of summer. :/

The N-domination in the Netherlands is strong. It's like some bizarro world because this would have been impossible just 2 years or so ago. Hell, retailers gave Nintendo always so little shelf-space it would make you sad just looking at it. They even grouped GBA and DS together showing only the backside in some retailers when the DS was in it's first year (even PSP got more shelfspace than both GBA and DS combined), Gamecube games section was laughable compared to PS2 and PC (maybe even Xbox). Of course, it couldn't be more different nowadays.

Depending on how you consider Mario & Sonic (first or 3rd party), Nintendo got 8 out of 9 games in the top 10 alone, and ironicly they helped push the Guitar Hero brand by paying for Guitar Hero III marketing, and helping Activision with the Guitar add-on strap (design, manufacturing). I don't know if there was marketing for On Tour, I haven't seen it at least.

not very much. heavenly sword is the only one i saw at a cheap price. the others, in the stores i usually visit, are priced at 59/69 euros.

Yeah, it's insane. Living in Australia I've seen it for my own eyes. Many of this board who hail from America or Japan wouldn't know just how bad, and I mean bad, the Gamecube did in Europe/Australia.

I mean, only months after the console launched, some retailers wouldn't even stock Gamecube games. Go into a games store and many times you would actually have a hard time finding any recent Gamecube games. Sometimes you wouldn't find any at all.

It's truly incredible how things have changed since then. The transformation of Nintendo in the public eye has been amazing. They've gone from an unknown, unliked quantity to the freshest and most popular company in the industry.

Indeed, I bought my games online for cheaper than at retailer. And like you said, the recent GC games were often not there at all (or only untill right after launch). So you got mostly 3rd party multiplatform titles and the ocasionly big Nintendo title (but not stuff like Pikmin 1 and 2, Animal Crossing, Sunshine, Paper Mario, F-Zero, Star Fox, Metroid Prime 1 etc).

I do agree with you that there has been an incredible change for Nintendo lately, but when you said "unknown", do you mean that Nintendo as a company was unknow to the public i.e 5 years ago when the GC, PS2 and Xbox was the lead consoles?

cjelly said:

On the internets for sure but retailers here are a bit more hesitant with slashing the price. I don't think we'll see huge sales but having a budget line can only help down the road in price sensitive markets, esp. if games have a RRP of 60€+.

Not even 2 years in I have a lot more games for Wii than I did for GC and that's with PC gaming still going strong. Although to be fair I did have a PS2...

Yeah. There was a distinct difference between the public image of Nintendo during the Gamecube era compared to previous generations. Few (at least, comparatively to the PS2/Xbox) in the mass audience knew of Nintendo or Gamecube during this time, and for a great portion of those who did, saw it only to be a 'kiddy' machine designed solely for children.

This is true. It's incredible what happened here. If you look at the stores nowadays, the shelfspace for both DS and Wii are still growing. They also get the prominent placing in stores. Nintendo just came back out of nowhere.

Ok, then i understood you right :) I do agree with what you said in what i just quoted you on, but i do not think that Nintendo as a company was unknown to the general public even during the Gamecube era though. With "unknown" i mean that if you asked random people on the streets what Nintendo was and they answered that they didnt know what Nintendo was.

Sure, Gamecube was exactly the most popular and known console at that time, but Nintendo has always been strong on the handheld side and Nintendo do have a rather large history within the videogame industry. I do think people in general knew or had heard of Nintendo even in the Gamecube era. Of course this is just assumtions from my side, and there are probably some people who had never heard of Nintendo before the Wii and the DS was released, but i would be very suprised of people in general i.e 5 years ago had never heard of Nintendo before the Wii and the DS was released. And with "people in general" i think mostly in the areas/countries worldwide were gaming have been/is popular and/or relatively popular.

I just had to say what i thought about this case :) That being said, i do agree that Nintendo is probably known by many more people in general now than before :) And Nintendo is definitly more popular now than Nintendo was i.e 5 years ago in the Gamecube era :)

Of course this is just assumtions from my side, and there are probably some people who had never heard of Nintendo before the Wii and the DS was released, but i would be very suprised of people in general i.e 5 years ago had never heard of Nintendo before the Wii and the DS was released. And with "people in general" i think mostly in the areas/countries worldwide were gaming has been popular and/or relatively popular.

I just had to say what i thought about this case :) That being said, i do agree that Nintendo is probably known by many more people in general now than before :)

Nintendo just had a complete lack of presence in the console market during the Gamecube generation. You would not believe how many didn't even know about the Gamecube. And many of those who did simply looked at it in disdain. Nintendo's public imagine, for home consoles anyway (their handhelds didn't suffer the same fate) was shot.

It's this what makes their turnaround so amazing. It's happened so quickly too.

When it comes to the Gamecube only i do agree with you, but when it comes to Nintendo in general as a company (that is how i understood it as you said earlier atleast), i do not think the general public had no idea what Nintendo was :)

But as i said earlier, this is just assumptions from my side, but i would be very surpised if the general public had never heard of Nintendo before based on that their handheld systems have been pretty popular (i guess they have been pretty popular pretty much worldwide atleast) and that Nintendo has a rather large history in the video game industry.

But if you were thinking of the console market only, then i agree with you that the general public probably didnt known what the Gamecube was.

Ye, it happend very quickly indeed :)

When I said "unknown quantity", I was saying that some in Europe/Australia didn't even know Nintendo had a console out during last generation, let alone the many that didn't have any interest in it. I even know some people who, during last generation, thought Nintendo stopped making consoles after the N64. That's how pathetic the Gamecube's presence and image was. They knew Nintendo was still alive (the GBA made sure of that) but in the grand scheme of things, few had any interest in the Gamecube.

I think we're on the same page of thinking here though.

I bet you £100 that when the next Nintendo console comes out there will be people saying how the Wii's library of games was great and it was underrated too. Same with PS3>PS4, and same with Xbox360>Xbox whatever. And the next generation after that, and the next generation after that. EVERY SINGLE GENERATION is just full of people saying how the one before was "so much better", when in fact there were the exact same complaints made about that too.

If all this bemoaning was accumulative you'd think that current generation games consoles were shoving red hot needles into our eyes and pumping out Satanic brainwashing through the surround sound speakers.

Ah ok, now i understand what you mean, thanks for describing it better to me! :) I was actually wondering what you ment with "unliked quantity", but i only asked you about what you ment with "unknown", i could have asked you what you ment with "unliked quantity" too, but i didnt, sorry. I first thought you ment Nintendo as a company itself, or the word "Nintendo" itself, and if you stopped random people on the streets and asked them if they knew what Nintendo was, and then like 7 out of 10 people would reply "i dont know what Nintendo is". Sorry for the missunderstanding.

Ye, i think we are on the same page indeed :)

Speaking of the Gamecube, i dont think it was that popular here were i live either. I remember i bought an used Gamecube with something like 15-20 games included back in 2005 (23th of July 2005 to be precise, i just checked my e-mails :)) on an online auction website here for about 275 US dollars/175 Euro (converted from my country's currency) including shipping. It was also an auction that was running for several of days i remember correctly so i'm alitle suprised that the bid didnt go higher. Everything was used and there were quite some scratches on all of the games, but i think every game worked (or maybe 1-2 was damaged).

To put things in perspective, i think a new Gamecube in the stores costed like 160 US dollars/100 Euro at the same time. A new Gamecube game costed maybe like 90 US dollars/60 Euro. So i got an used Gamecube with about 15-20 games for about the same price as a new Gamecube with 1-2 new games costed.

Of course i might just have been very lucky with winning the auction for that price, i dont think there were any pictures in the auction so that might be one reason for why it went for a low price, but still. I'm suprised that it went for this price :)

I do agree with you that there has been an incredible change for Nintendo lately, but when you said "unknown", do you mean that Nintendo as a company was unknow to the public i.e 5 years ago when the GC, PS2 and Xbox was the lead consoles?
Put it this way, I grew up playing the NES and SNES, SMB was my first videogame love. I completely skipped the N64 and GC for a PS1 and PS2. The fact that I hardly even knew about the GC speaks volumes.

Your story is almost exactly like mine :) Our first gaming console was a NES Action Set (including Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt). I loved (and still do) Super Mario Bros, such a great game and i have so many great memories with that game! :) I really wanted a SNES when it came out, but i never got one as a kid, i even cried because of that hehe :( After this i bought a PSX and a PS2, i also skipped the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube (although i bought a used Gamecube in 2005, but i have hardly used it :\). I did know about the N64 and the Gamecube though (or what do you mean with that you hardly knew about the N64 or the GC?), but unfortunately i didnt have too much interest in those 2 systems :\

I disagree. I've been gaming since the late 70's and I don't look back to a golden age of gaming. Imo gaming has never been better than it is now.

i don't remeber exactly, it was christmas time (december 2003 if i recall, not 2004, but almost it). sad thing was that the only above-average game for GC they had was starfox adventures.

There are many ads in Germany, though.
I wouldn't debate that (don't watch TV 24/7). But I'm quite confident to say that if I haven't even seen one ad it wasn't really marketed to hell - that's all I was trying to say, not that there are no ads at all.

Different people, different tastes. If it wasn't for some Wii games bringing something fresh I'd be stuck with basically the same games I have been playing since years and though some mechanics are now refined I played most of these games in better versions before. I was always a computer gamer at first though.

Well, I would say its actually on par with a regular Nintendo published title when it comes to TV advertisment. This obviously wont be the case in a few weeks from now, but the launch window seems really packed with TV spots.

Yeah I actually did know about the N64, but I hardly knew of many good games for it, based on the fact that no one around me had one. I only ever remember 1 friend who had it, and we played Mario Kart and Golden Eye. I never knew anyone with a GC. I bought one used last year for $50 AU dollars with windwaker at cash converters. I payed for a brand new PS2 by comparison, even though it was a bit late into the generation. FFX was the game that made me want to buy a PS2, while the GC wasn't even existing let alone have a game that lured me. Anyways I'm getting a bit off topic here. Bottom line you really need to live in Australia to really understand how impressive Nintendo has been.

Ah ok, its a pity that they didnt have more games, but 49 euro for a new Gamecube back then is a great price i must say, its probably maybe a great price even today :) Congratulations on getting it for that price! :)

Ah ok, i think i know what you mean, you knew about the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube, but not too much about which games that was cool to play or not? If so, it was probably the same with me. I didnt have too much interest in the Nintendo 64 or the Gamecube so unfortunately i didnt pay too much attention to which game that was cool to play or not.

I remember one of my cousins had a N64, i played some Mario Kart 64 maybe a few times at his place (i didnt visit him that often), i think that was cool :) I also remember that he once brought his N64 over to our place and we played alittle Super Mario 64, i think that was cool as well! :) My sister owned (she still owns it) a Gamecube. She bought the Mario Kart Double Dash Gamecube bundle, a Gamecube + the game Mario Kart Double Dash. I played that game alittle too, i think that was cool to play as well! :)

50 AU dollars seems like a good price for a Gamecube + Windwaker, congratulations on getting that! :) I bought the PS2 about a year or 2 after its launch here where i live (in Europe). I got bundled with Gran Turismo 3 and This is Football 2002 (i think atleast).

Ok, i understand. I havnt been to Australia so i have no idea how the situation with the Gamecube was there, so i belive that the situation was pretty bad when people who lives in Australia says so :) I just wanted to say that i still thought that people knew what Nintendo was eventhough the Gamecube was doing it pretty poorly, but _Alkaline_ explained what he ment so i understood him :) It was just a missunderstanding from my side, sorry :\

Yet the Gamecube had better games.
Yet the Wii had a better first party line-up when compared to the GC's first 18 months. Both in quantity AND quality.

Better 3rd party support too (except for some multiplatform titles but in general). Even with the higher profile stuff, after more than 3.5 years into it's life, we got Tales of Symphonia. Wii got ToS 2 after 2 years. Baten Kaitos came after 3 years. (Not really comparable but from the same developers we get Disaster: Day of Crisis likely earlier than that). Beyond Good and Evil was multi platform and came after 2 years. Killer7 more than 3.5 years after launch, multiplatform. Same with Viewtiful Joe, but 2 years. MGS:Twin Snakes 2.5 years. RE 4 took more then 3.5 years and went multiplatform. Well I suppose there is stuff like Phantasy Star Online, Star Wars titles, Super Monkey Ball and some of the Resident Evil's relatively early (most around 1 year) but Wii has it's share of good 3rd party games too, with the difference that a LOT of great gamecube games didn't come until it's 3rd or 4th year (see above for several of them), the Wii is still far from being that long on the market.

I think these are the majority of the stand-out 3rd party titles. I honestly don't see how the GameCube was so much better and everything like some people seem to think. I really loved the GameCube and think it was a GREAT console but if you look past the shovelware on the Wii and only at the quality titles, I just can't see how the Wii is not (even slightly?) better than how the GameCube did in the same time. The Wii is what, 20 months old? Compare it to GameCube's first 20 months. There is also a bunch of great 3rd party games from Japan coming, western support is getting better by the month, there's WiiWare and Nintendo's first party support for after 2008. And that's now, you can see above that the GameCube while "failing" got some stunning games in it's 3rd and 4th year, I think because Wii is marketleader and everything, we will only see more and more.

I'll agree with that. GCN had great software and was by far the best value (more powerful and half the price of a PS2 most of the generation).

Just goes to show you that the best product doesn't win, the best positioned product does. I hope anyone complaining about the Wii selling 'because it's a rip-off for what hardware you get' were the first to buy GameCubes last gen, when Nintendo had by far the best value platform in terms of hardware.

Euronics (probably the biggest chain for everything electronics releated together with Mediaworld chains) received a whopping 9 copies (lol) saturday morning, instead of the usual 3 or 4 every couple of weeks, and I bought the last one at 11:20 AM). Wow, really it seems a bizarro world when just one yera ago here anything videogame was either Playstation or Pro Evolution Soccer.
