That happened sometimes, but normally everyone had a tonne of work to do.

Also, then if you had something specific in mind you had to make sure the other person knew exactly what you wanted - and even when hammering on the 's' key if I recall it started to get slower and slower as it grabbed subsequent frames so you didn't want to start doing that until the point at which you were sure it was the shot you wanted.

Just easier at a point to do it yourself.

POP 224: Where we learn of Greg's fear of water... (around an hour 10.)

245: I miss Greg Ford.

254: Introduction of the Mario music playing Phil off... (38 minute)

260: Mike officially joins the crew!

267: Greg debut's Generation 16.

I can't find the screenshot of the iPhone on the episode where Ford started "in case you forgot!" but I think it was in the 230s. Another one I can't find is the story about the coworker who ate a 6 pound burger while on Atkins. I think that was in the 210s.

The interview episode was great. I'd love an episode where you grab some ex-gamefan people and talk. A P1P and WAHP crossover episode perhaps?

Sadly I never read any of the popular gaming magazines. I read Sega Visions

Very eye opening episode. More interviews please! Especially during the droughts of summer and such.

Didn't know Dave Halverson tipped you guys off lol.

And yeah, Gamefan screenshots were the best in the business. They blew everyone away.

It was a good episode, and no offense to the guest, but I really didn't care about his experiences. I'd love to see an episode with a couple guests that worked on the magazine together, and discuss a particular issue - say maybe, the Dreamcast launch issue or even PS2, or something earlier. Or that first EGM2 issue...

Still, great episode.

Wow, I remember Kelly Rickard only lasted a couple of issues. If my memory serves me correct, in issue 108 someone writes in asking what happened to him and EGM (likely Shoe at the time) responds that he had some personal issues and they wish him all the best. Maybe his personal issue was not knowing the secret ingredient to Gamefanès screenshot recipe.

I remembered the inter-magazine ribbing being somewhat mean-spirited at times, but maybe that's just how I interpreted it as a child. One of the less mean-spirited exchanges I recall was when a reader wrote in to the Sushi X-files: "Gamepro wrote 'We wonder who will be playing Sushi-X next month.' What do they mean?" Sushi-X responded: "It means 'Scary Larry' and 'Dan Elektro' don't think I'm real. Go figure."

That reminds me -- aside from Kelly Rickard coming from Gamefan, which other high profile writers moved between magazines? Didn't "Major Mike" Weigrand start off at EGM before moving to Gamepro for most of his career? Was there any drama involved in that move?

The screenshots thing had nothing to do with why he only lasted a couple issues.

Yes Weigand was at EGM before GamePro - I think he left after I'd left the first time and before I came back, so I'm not certain of the story there. But he did a lot at Sendai. He was EIC of Mega-Play, right? The Sega-only EGM?

Great episode! My main EGM 'era,' 1990-1995, pre-dated CJ's second stint & Greg, although I remember seeing them in the mag when I picked up an issue from time to time in later years. There was nothing better than getting those Japan updates on the Mega CD and PC Engine, and 400+ page December monstrosities.

One thing I'd like to know is whether anyone at EGM actually played the original Lunar: The Silver Star on Sega CD. It got something like 8-8-8-7, but it was shoehorned into this column on the side and didn't get an actual review crew treatment.

I remember seeing that as well. I felt that EGM had a very pro-Nintendo theme to it around the mid-90s, so I wasn't all that surprised.

Plus, game coverage at that time had to be a bitch. You were talking SNES, Genny, Sega CD, 3DO, Jaguar, Game Boy, Game Gear, NeoGeo...I think there were even more consoles out there as well. Not everything was going to get fair treatment.

Regarding the split with fans on EGM vs Gamepro, I was a subscriber to both and enjoyed both but it wasn't until around 93 or 94 when I was 13, 14 that I began really enjoying EGM's content far more than Gamepro's and let Gamepro out of my life.

Still as a kid who loved video games and wanted to know everything about them, you really wanted both. But in the early to mid 90s EGM really started to set itself apart with its own feel and look.

He was kicking ass at podracing earlier. Saw a bit of Phantasy Star as well. Everyone is getting that Extra Life hype on Twitch - lots of people doing it this year!

Wouldn't your rather tune into Rebel FM's stream to be personally insulted by one of the hosts? I know Mike's probably already there...

Dope, can't wait to hear someone talk about Samurai Warriors 4. Hope it isn't Phil though. It takes him 10 minutes to stop making jokes about it, then will actually talk about the game.

I haven't listened to the episode yet, I hope my connection problems at the beginning didn't make the episode a nightmare to edit.

Here is the link for the telethon. I realize I expressed myself poorly when we recorded: by "financing" hours of the telethon, I just meant reaching the thresholds to unlock more hours of podcasting. None of the money goes to NWR, it's all going to charity!

Thanks for having me on, guys!

I love those kids stories.

I wonder if they miss cool things not having all the space/military cartoons from the 80s.

In 70,80,90s we didn't have something like in Adventure Time, but big part of cartoons today are so much babyish.

Loving this episode so far. Rfn and p1p (and POA) podcasts are by far my favourite entertainment each week.

Guillaume, you are a pretty natural fit. Love all the guys on both podcasts.

Ep 307: One of the best Phil episodes as he does the glorious Bane doing Slim Shady rap as well as his impression of a Danny Elfman soundtrack

312: Mike does a great "what the hell is happening" in response to the history of Chicago, but more importantly the long national nightmare that is Greg playing Skyward Sword finally comes to an end.

329: Chris justifies the Xbone's onerous DRM policies because he doesn't want to ever get up and change a disc.

348: Quite possibly the best CJ edit in the history of the show... poor Ringo.

364: The episode where we learn of Mike's furry preferences.

Episode 418: Just Febreeze It

This week! Alamogordo Atari carts show up on eBay, Nintendo announces a bunch of stuff, first-person most in GTAV next-gen, South Park takes a stab at freemium games, Share Play shenanigans, Steam machines, Wii U refurbs, favorite controllers and more. Games discussed include SPORTS stuff, A Bird Story, Evil Within (demo), Murdered: Soul Suspect, Costume Quest 2, Sonic Boom 3DS (demo), Sunset Overdrive, Freedom Wars, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and The Crew. Join us, won’t you?

Regarding the Steambox talk, Greg, the Alienware Alpha is pretty much exactly what you described as what you wanted from a Steambox.

- Small enough to fit in your entertainment center (it's apparently the size of a Wii.)
- Has a specific console UI (can boot to regular desktop if you want, though.)
