The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I loved the Extra Life segment. So many gaming podcasts today are bitch, bitch, bitch all the time (not saying it isn't warranted -- the industry is a terrible mess in a lot of ways right now), but this segment just made me feel good. I'm already looking forward to donating next year.

Honestly I feel that way. Player one is a breath of fresh air in the gaming world. Its nice hearing people, for the most part, enjoying an industry/games theyre supporting. It's the only podcast I still subscribe to other than retronauts.

Also, does anyone remember that kickstarter genesis book Greg mentioned a few episodes back? I was interested in that.

Thanks!

The book I was talking about is called the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works, and it's out now. You can purchase it here.

I'm just about through the book now. I'm blown away by the quality of the whole thing. It starts out with a huge essay about the history of the Genesis, peppered liberally with quotes from a bunch of different folks who were involved. Then it overflows with fantastic images - from scans of design docs for games like Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage to concept art for various controllers and hardware. It finally finishes up with something like a dozen interviews with various developers and designers, both eastern and western.

It's awesome.

You guys didn't even mention the best part of the Polygon Disney/Nintendo acquisition piece:

nice, i was podcast starved, turkey full, during family time.

the correct answer is that the new JP and SW trailers both sucked because CGI ruins everything.

Player One now has a Patreon page. For those who are so inclined to support such a thing.

Pretty surprised to see it after all the fun-poking at other podcasts that have asked for donations. Makes me wonder if someone got laid off or something, hope you guys are OK.

Since I'm here and didn't have a GAF account when the episode aired, I'd like to bring up some old shit regarding giving games separate scores for multiplayer and single player.

I was surprised how opposed you guys seemed to the idea since some of you would seemingly benefit from it. Like, I think Mike has said before that he likes to play through the campaigns of Call of Duty games but isn't interested in the multiplayer.

Someone, I think Mike again, compared giving separate campaign and multiplayer scores to separately reviewing a movie's plot and soundtrack, which seems like a bad analogy to me. For a lot of games campaign and online modes are made by different people with different goals, so scoring them separately is more like separately reviewing a Pixar movie and the short that played before it.

I don't remember if it was a regular thing but for at least a few reviews EGM did separate scores for campaign and multi. I think it's a cool idea, you can quickly get an idea about the part of the game you actually care about and a game that's strong in one area and weak in another doesn't need to get a score that's an average of the two.

We've had a donate button for a long time which people have used and helped to fund most of the show's expenses. The podcast will still come out every week Patreon or no Patreon. The only goal up for now is doing special additional podcasts. Otherwise it's really not much different than the donate button. There will be shirts going up soonish too for the first time too. All optional.

We've not divided the show into "seasons," we've not said we can't continue unless we reach a goal, we're not banking on expensive equipment to keep doing it - things will continue the way they are either way (with the exception of an upcoming change to the release schedule). If this allows us to do more special things and improve the show's content, then great. Some of that is TBD, based upon how this is received. *shrug*

With Patreon you can cap how much you feel comfortable spending each month. But even $1 an episode is appreciated, or a positive review on iTunes.

Yeah, I get the difference between you guys doing this and groups asking for money to fund gaming PCs or rent office space or whatever. I wasn't trying to call you guys out, and I hope you reach your goal because the past interview episodes have been great, just thought it was initially surprising since you guys typically don't seem to have the highest opinion of Kickstarters and similar donation things.

Since Nintendo Power shut down, I've been laid off (barring the occasional freelance gig or substitute teaching) for two years now. You haven't seen me go on the internet begging for money. I just look for another job like grown-ups do.

I have been begging for money on the streets of San Francisco lately, however. If you're interested in contributing you can find me Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM at just outside the 16th Mission BART station!

Ah, I feel bad now. Again, wasn't trying to call you guys out, just took me by surprise.

That's cool you're substitute teaching Phil, I always wondered what ever came of that. You used to talk about it a lot when you were in school and then stopped.

Monday night is shit. I watched it live, raw and uncut.

I don't understand why people are saying that Uncharted looks amazing. If you say PS4 Uncharted, what we were shown is pretty much what I picture. Yeah, it looks good and it will probably play okay, but I just don't get the amazing part.

This may or may not be a joke based on something said in the podcast.

Anyway, I thought the PSX keynote was middling to fair. All of Sony's conferences do this thing where they sound great if you read a list of announcements, but the viewing experience is an excruciatingly dull march towards death. Here's people with videos showing nothing. Here's someone being on stage for too long. Here's a bunch of d-list games that should be announced on a blog somewhere.

Also, Phoenix Wright going digital is a terrible example of niche games only deserving digital releases since the games were remarkably consistent sellers in Western territories and the numbers are much higher than what you guys probably think they are. PW isn't Yakuza where the last US release sold less than 10k. Digital Yakuza makes sense, whereas Capcom completely skipping the last DS game and relegating all future games to digital is just Capcom being run by shitty penny-pinchers. The Layton crossover game got a physical release, and that's even more niche. The key difference is that the localization and release wasn't handled by Capcom.

Episode 422: Sounds of Experience

This week! The Game Awards, PlayStation Experience, the announcements and trailers from both those shows like Nintendo showing off Zelda Wii U. Plus: Forza Horizon 2, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Dragon Age, Little Big Planet 3 and more. Plus: We announce our Patreon, new schedule, and the sound quality takes a dip because of course it does right when we open a Patreon (backers will not be charged for this episode).

I thought Mike's reactions to Zelda and Uncharted were interesting. Both games were pretty much identical to me "yep, that's a next gen one of those, looks neat."

What about Uncharted was so amazing?

Dudes, I think the Patreon works better at dollar/month rather than per episode.

I agree. I was about to contribute this morning; however, per episode I decided not to at this time. If it was per month I would chip in definitely.
