Late to the Party: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

BLOODLINES, DUDE. So I've heard a lot of praise for this game during my time on GAF, and for some reason I didn't bother playing it until recently. I love choice and consequence heavy RPG's, and it's been compared favorably to the GOTF, Deus Ex, but for some reason I held off until now. Maybe it was the mouthful of a title or the fact that it's never on sale Steam. I mean, who wants to pay TWENTY US DOLLARS for some crusty old PC game? However, after finishing Alpha Brotocol, I was fiending for another C&C RPG so I took the plunge.

REQUIRED LISTENING: 1 & 2

I went with the classiest clan, the Ventrue, who occupy the upper crust of vampire society. I must say, my vamp lady, Marissa, was one cool broad:

ventrueegcb.png

- looks undeniably badass while wearing a leather trenchcoat and wielding a desert eagle
- uses the power of Dominate disciple to choke enemies from afar (Suicide) and turn the chumps against each other (Possession)
- thanks to her maxed Appearance and high Persuation skills, she can use the power of blue balls to get what she wants
- so high class that she vomits up the blood of low-borns like hobos and hookers

I've started a second playthrough as a Malkavian, and it's pretty amazing so far. Every single one of the conversation options have been rewritten in an abstract and sometimes amusing way and the trippy stuff like the whispers has been bugging me out. I also enjoy the NPC's sometimes befuddled response to my strange way of speaking.
It's remarkable that two playthroughs can be so different.

Those who have played Bloodlines will likely agree that it has some damn good CHARACTERS. They range from slutty, to schizophrenic, to revolving, to pitiful and despicable. Troika managed to create well defined characters that evoke a variety responses instead of the soulless automatons that fall of an assembly line into most RPG universes.

BROS:

c41k2d.jpg

Heather Poe
My ghoul waifu. She's the center of one of Bloodlines' most impressive quests. I stumbled across her in Santa Monica, and decided to save her from her mortal wounds by making her my ghoul. Later in the game, she showed up at my place and offered to be my personal ghoul and blood doll. It was nice to come home and find that she lured in a fresh meatbag for my lunch.

Sadly,
the Sabbat scum kidnapped her and killed her before my eyes. No one fucks with my ghoul and lives to speak of it, I tore those bastards apart.

c3gjv3.jpg

Damsel
I'm a fan for bitchy women, and Damsel was just oozing with bitchiness. She hated my guts for working with the Prince, but it was always a delight to visit her at the Last Round and bask in her unbridled scorn towards me. However, beneath all that I think she had a thing for me. When I returned to tell her that I had vanquished the Plaguebearers, I saw a flicker of admiration in her eye, regardless of how hard she tried to hide it.

1GNnW.jpg

Jeanette & Therese Voerman
The Ventrue sisters who run a night club in the Santa Monica district. I enjoyed the dynamic between the two, Therese is a stark and focused business woman with zero tolerance for bullshit, while Jeanette is a spontaneous and slutty little firecracker. It found it interesting
that holy crap, they're the same person! After some careful consideration I decided to help the Jeanette side become dominate, since I prefer the slutty persona over the frigid persona.

FOES:

c2m8ar.jpg

The Prince
A fellow Ventrue and a total prick. I chose to align with him for most of the game, even though he was clearly an untrustworthy little shit. I didn't trust the Anarchs with power, but more importantly the Prince could pay well, so I went where the money was. He was always quick to remind me that I was inferior, that I only existed to run his errands. I was sure to respond to him with a heavy dose of sass, which always had hilarious results.

He made my shit list when he
ordered a blood hunt for me after the "death" of Nines. Despite all I had done for him, he was fine with having me whacked since I had outlived my usefulness. In the end, his "top agent" turned the tables on him by killing all his dudes and putting Maximillian in power. If only I could have witnessed his execution!

c5cud9.jpg

Andrei
Sabbat scum. Fuck his stupid green face.

One of the HIGHLIGHTS of Bloodlines is the wide variety of locations you'll visit. Each of the four hubs have several establishments (porn shops, strip clubs, grocery stores, etc) you can visit, each with a unique name and interior, quirky NPC's and a shit ton of details like talk radio stations, computer logs, and news reports. It was exciting to unlock a new hub and explore every building for the first time. The variety of missions was also impressive, you visit all kinds of fascinating and twisted locations like the studio of a snuff porn producer and a mansion haunted by a murdered family. It rarely if ever felt predictable or routine.

Of course, there is one DOWNSIDE to Bloodlines: the combat kinda sucks. At best, it's somewhat amusing when you're sneaking around and sucking unexpecting grunts to death, at worst it's poorly balanced, clunky and very aggravating. Gunplay is stat based so you'll be struggling with an unreliable reticle and missing enemies at point blank. Melee is a more satisfying alternative, but wielding a katana or sledgehammer will make the game much more difficult in it's rough patches.

The absolute worst part of Bloodlines is unfortunately it's final several hours. The last two missions have you marching down seemingly endless corridors as hoards of enemies swarm you again and again. It was particular frustrating at
the Prince's tower where I had to face fully armored enemies without any means of restoring my blood or health.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good challenge, but it was difficult only because it was haphazardly designed and seemingly rushed. It was frustrating enough to have me yelling at my screen like a goddamn idiot. Bloodlines ended on a sour note, but I was willing to forgive it's mistakes since the content outside of it's combat was god-tier.

IN SUMMARY, if you have even the slightest interest in RPGS, but haven't played this game, you are an asshole. It's dark, depraved and disturbing in all the right ways. Impatient gamers may be discouraged by it's rough patches, but those with an appreciation for the finer things in life will most likely agree, that it is a great fucking RPG.

Thoughts? How were your experiences with the other builds? Who were your favorite and least favorite characters?

The highs of this game are pretty amazing, but the lows are pretty amazingly bad. The hotel level is probably one of the most brilliant levels I've ever played in an RPG.

And then some of the latter combat levels are some of the worst level designs I've ever seen in an RPG. The way they placed obstacles made me think they were completley ignorant to the janky movement/combat present in the game, because the obstacles exacerbated the jank and made it even more annoying.

Still a great game though. OP definitely needs more Jack. A LOT more Jack.

Probably not.

Played it during my 9800 pro days (that card was godly!), but never beat it. I remember getting stuck in/by a mansion and I think I said fuck it and moved on to Far Cry or COD or something.

I did remember enjoying it a lot though.

Made an agreement with another GAF member, refused to honor it because he was broke, but then had no problem continuing to buy video games.
Im curious, does this game has some sort of exploration or sidequests?

Jack was pretty awesome, I only saw him a couple times, though. I plan on siding with the Anarchs in my current Malkavian playthrough so maybe I'll see more of him.

I also should have added Gary but I'm not a fan of those sewer dwelling vermin.

Tons, dude. The exploration is limited to the hubs, it's not an open world game, but there are tons of opportunity to stray from the main path and come across sidequests.

I know it's practically a meme at this point, but I'll for sure pick it up if it's on sale in the summer sale, if it isn't, I'll pick it up after.

I've been wanting to play this for the longest time, and every time someone brings it up I feel guilty about it.

I couldn't bring myself to take the plunge on the D2D sale because I'm holding out hope that one day it will go on sale on Steam. Maybe during the summer on a special week? One can dream.

GAF recommended I start the game with a Malkavian character, is this really the way to go :p ? You made it sound like I'll appreciate it more as a second playthrough.

I stopped playing a month ago because of the combat

Yeah, I guess wait out the Steam sale but according to my time counter, I've already spent 50 hours with it so it's not a bad deal @ $20.

I've found it much more interesting than my first playthrough, but it's still nice as an incentive to play it a second time.

...And now I know what the hell "LTTP" means! (That was bugging the crap out of me)
And on the topic of Bloodlines, I didn't feel I'd enjoy it, so I didn't really look into it (Also, learned fairly late about the game). I DO like Source Engine, and seeing what an officially licensed developer can do with it (That isn't Valve) all the way back in 2004-05 is rather interesting. Didn't know it was known for any kind of praise, or well regarded by GAF. Might look into it during a sale, or when I have a few extra bucks.

I don't doubt the quality. I'm just cheap and lacking money, hahaha!

urbandictionary is a great resource when I don't know what all these young people are saying on the internet.
I'm not saying that mockingly. I really use it all the time because I have no idea what people are saying sometimes.

Picked this up at the beginning of the month at the start of my play games that people like binge (just finished the binge with the end of Mask of the Betrayer). While it is certainly a great game, it didn't live up to the expectations that I had for it. The writing was great; each of the characters was distinct; Anarchs were my bros; the haunted hotel was creepy as fuck.

The combat was definitely a negative though. My Gangrel vamp was a stealthy unarmed character and while I was able to stealth through most levels silent killing anyone I saw, the enemies would hear me as I got close. They'd blurt out "who's there", "what was that" as I waited, less than a foot behind them, for them to go back to their unalarmed state when I would instantly assassinate them. It meant that I never needed to use my blood powers, which was a good thing since only one of them was useful. In the last two missions I just put all the points I could into firearms to aid in the desert eagle spamming of bosses.

The best part of the game for me was that my vampire was never at the top. Sure he was powerful compared to the bum that he feasted on while downtown, but compared to the other vampires that were 100s of years old I was insignificant; a tool to be used.

Oh also the boss fight with Ming Xiao was wierd. Demons are wierd.

OP needs more Jack, how can you not like the old pirate? Also, Bloodlines is definitively one of the best games I've ever played!

Took me ages to realise that was Bender/Marcus Fenix. I knew I recognised that voice from somewhere.

I just payed this game for the first time a few months ago from Steam and loved almost every bit of it. It completely nails the atmosphere and the soundtrack fits perfectly. I played as a Brujah the first time and I think I'll have another playthough soon. Probably one of the best action RPGs I've ever played and the dialogue is fantastic, particularly the whole Jeanette & Therese part.

The only downside like the OP said was
towards the end in the tower where it just throws a bunch of heavily armed enemies at you room after room. Melee combat is decent, but the gunplay is still pretty bad even if you have the relevant stats maxed out. I got fed up and just enabled invincibility via the console.

Combichristoffersen

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Usually I really don't care about WRPGs, but Bloodlines was, and is, fuckin' ace. That said, OP is absolutely correct that the combat is very clunky, and that the endgame just isn't any fun at all. Still, it's a great game. A shame Troika went belly up and couldn't get to work on a sequel.

To be fair, all of these could be applied to a single character. Well, a single body, at least.

Anyway, public announcement time:

1) Arcanum doesn't get nearly enough love. With Drog's patches it's the closest representation of pen & paper RPGs ever created. You can role-play as anyone and do anything. No other game gives you this kind of freedom except maybe Dwarf Fortress.

2) New converts should look into Dead State (I assume old dogs already know of it). It's an upcoming RPG by the lead writer of Bloodlines and his no less talented wife, combining meaty character work and social (single-player) role-playing with tactical gameplay of the X-Com series.

One of my favorite RPGs of all time. I wish we could get more gothic, traditional horror (you know, vampires, werewolves, et all) RPGs or free roam games.

.

Pretty strong words. Anything to say to back that up?

Or, you know, sell me on it?

Awesome OP for an awesome game.

Snuggler, you're tasked with Planescape: Torment next, if you haven't played it. 10 bucks on GoG. You can snag both Torment and Bloodlines together for half the price of a new console release.

We still live in a world where too many people haven't played these games.

And with Steam's upcoming massive summer sale, Bloodlines will likely go down even further in price.

Ah, is that so? Shame. A sale would only get more people to check it out; I think some who are hesitant would be more inclined to snag it at $10 or even $15. Totally worth the price at 20, though.

She may as well be. She's a Kuei-Jin. They make pacts with demons for power.

I looked up the Kuei-Jin ending, and it sounds hilarious. It's a fitting ending for anyone foolish enough to side with that evil bitch.

Also re: the ending, it was interesting to talk to the psychic at Santa Monica on my second playthrough since the things she says make sense now. "Don't open it".

I remember when the game first came out. It was around launch, and i was playing it. Game was a bit buggy and shit, and i remember critical reception wasnt that great. But the group of people playing it were really enjoying it. I remember being scared by some haunted house mission and being surprised it was so good.

I'd kill for a sequel, but I'd kill for more RPG's in general that are equally ambitious in their design. I don't know about you guys but I'm growing tired of color coded ego trips.

I'm way LTTP with most of the classic CRPG's, but coming from games like Mass Effect, I feel like I'm personally witnessing the devolution of WRPG's in reverse order.

This is probably my favorite game of all time. I have played it many times through and there's still stuff I haven't seen (like that Tremere haven posted above, I had no clue).

It's also got the best atmosphere ever. Those two themes in the OP are amazing.

I find the game more fun in my replays by cheating and using god mode.

There are so many great sidequests in this game if really makes you want to try and do all of them.

Who says that's alcohol?

But really, there's a few possible explanations; keeping up images, or the fact that some vampires can imbibe it, but they get no sustenance from it.

I should really reinstall this game...

Always end up as a Ventrue or Malkavian though for some reason.

Raiders ending is still the best one :D

I thought you could choose your clan directly instead of just answering questions. I'm currently nearing the end of my Ventrue run, but Malkavian or possibly Brujah will be next.
